Great speech

Jesus Christ was he a good orator.

Found this amusing:

Quote:
For we are opposed around the world by a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy that relies primarily on covert means for expanding its sphere of influence--on infiltration instead of invasion, on subversion instead of elections, on intimidation instead of free choice, on guerrillas by night instead of armies by day. It is a system which has conscripted vast human and material resources into the building of a tightly knit, highly efficient machine that combines military, diplomatic, intelligence, economic, scientific and political operations. Its preparations are concealed, not published. Its mistakes are buried, not headlined. Its dissenters are silenced, not praised. No expenditure is questioned, no rumor is printed, no secret is revealed.

www.jfklibrary.org/Histor...271961.htm

I liked that too. At first I wasn't sure if he was talking about us or the Soviets. (I always love how the Soviets or the Arabs, or mafia dons, or drug lords or whoever the bad guys are supposed to be are capable of such vast and elaborate conspiracies, but the nation with the richest and most sophisticated military and propaganda techniques in the world never produces any leaders who conspire about anything serious. And if they do, it was always with the best of intentions.)

But I have to say, I didn't find this speech all that revealing. He's basically trying to get the press to (on their own, wink wink) recognize how serious the cold war is and self-censor the news a la Kay Graham's famous dictum that there are certain things the American people are better off not knowing.

Actually NewKid I think if he were talking about the soviets, he would have mentioned the soviets. Hm, musta been talkin about the same bunch that Woodrow Wilson was on about. Maybe the same bunch Eisenhower was on about in his last speech.

Umm, he's talking about the Soviets, not the Illuminati.

Quote:
For we are opposed around the world by a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy [a term frequently used at the time to describe Commies] that relies primarily on covert means for expanding its sphere of influence[another term that refers to the Commies]--on infiltration instead of invasion, on subversion instead of elections, on intimidation instead of free choice, on guerrillas by night instead of armies by day. hey interesting you should say that...so like...do you get payed for trying to get almost any thread you post on back onto a mainstream track or is that just your hobby?

I ask merely for information. It just occured to to me, thats all. You seem to be skepticle of anything non-mainstream, and this board is anything but mainstream. Yet you spend alot of time reading & writing on it. Id have thought that would get boring or ridiculous for someone who adheres to mainstream thinking, but like, maybe Im simply wrong. 600+ posts you made tell me I am wrong.

Now dont get all riled up - its simply a sincere question.

I think you could see that speech in two ways. And to me it leans more towards some other shadow group than the commies.

Edited by: 4911 at: 6/17/06 2:46 pm

And I just finished saying in another post that I thought Ward Churchill was an agent provocateur designed to create fake debate and discredit the left in television debate. I'd say that's a bit out of the mainstream, but I don't know, maybe not.

As for the speech, it's very obviously referring to the Soviets. Let's ignore the little problem that the rhetoric is routine anti-communist rhetoric of the day and the context of the speech is such that it would make absolutely no sense for him to be referring to some mystical cabal, and make perfect sense for him to be talking about the U.S.'s stated cold war adversary, and simply ask how likely is it that Kennedy would make a statement revealing the existence of a such a group in a public speech to newspaper editors?

NewKid: My apology, I was wrong about that, guess I havent read all your postage.

But to the speech, he says:

"on infiltration instead of invasion, on subversion instead of elections, on intimidation instead of free choice, on guerrillas by night instead of armies by day."

Commies invade, dont they?

And commies did have big armies. Maybe he was talking about cuban guerrillas, though.

to the question "and simply ask how likely is it that Kennedy would make a statement revealing the existence of a such a group in a public speech to newspaper editors?"

well, the speech was kinda two-tounged, I think. Maybe he dared not utter it by name or something? Wadnt that the Wilson quote? And lookit what happened to the big K in the end...

Am I also wrong that the commies werent a secret society either, during his time?

Hey and pardon my sxepsiz on your sqkepsice

Edited by: 4911 at: 6/17/06 2:50 pm

Remember what event had just happened at the time? The Bay of Pigs? Kennedy was concerned in many ways about the media presentation of his administration, especially right after the fiasco. This speech was the second of two big speeches that mark the 100 day period -- the editors speech and this speech, the publishers speech, a week later. This paper focuses on the editor's speech a week earlier, but gives probably more insight into the speechwriting at the time that you'd want to know.

www.ksg.harvard.edu/presspol/Research_Publications/Papers/Working_Papers/2000_4.PDF

If you're going to make a conspiracy argument for that speech, use this passage instead:

Quote:
“The very word 'secrecy' is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it. ”

www.conspiracyarchive.com/NWO/Hollywood_911.htm

But I don't think it's that revealing personally.

Great Speech?

What I find surprising about this speech is that it has been featured on Infowars as referring to the 'secret society' - where clearly it is not. It would seem to me that Infowars are falling foul of playing the same type of games the opposition plays. If you look hard enough, parallels can be found in any statement.

In terms of pure oration, it's a great speech.
