The trailer for it looked pretty stupid.

The place is way too large and widely known for it to be any secretive Eyes Wide Shut ritual or the place for any sinister cabals.

Most of it seems to be just a way to feel elite and carry on a tradition. I doubt very many of the viewers or participants have any idea where the idea to do this came from or who originally scripted the Cremation of Care ceremony.

While I don't think anything of major importance is really going on at the Grove, it does feel like a few people who've written on it are trying just a little too hard to make all this look like a harmless summer camp for rich people who want to relive their youth.

Edited by: NewKid at: 7/16/06 2:26 am

The Domhoff piece is trying way too hard to convince you this is normal. It doesn't really explain the why question. Normal people don't do this. Where did the idea to start doing all this come from? Why no analysis of the rhetoric and where it came from? The script of the ceremony just isn't stuff that's done by overgrown frat types sitting drunk at a bar, trying to go for a laugh.

Attack Ships, you raise some good points.

From Domhoff's "There Are No Conspiracies":

Quote:
Finally, the conspiratorial view assumes that illegal plans to change the government or assassinate people can be kept secret for long periods of time, but all evidence shows that secret groups or plans in the United States are uncovered by civil liberties groups, infiltrated by reporters or government officials, and written about in the press. Even secrets about wars and CIA operations -- Vietnam, the Contras, the rationales for Bush's invasion of Iraq in 2003 -- are soon exposed for everyone to see. As for assassinations and assassination attempts in the United States, from McKinley to Franklin D. Roosevelt to John F. Kennedy to Martin Luther King, Jr., to Robert F. Kennedy to Reagan, they have been the acts of individuals with no connections to any power groups.

sociology.ucsc.edu/whorulesamerica/theory/conspiracy.html

Nice little interview with John Foster "Chip" Berlet.

www.publiceye.org/antisemitism/nw_domhoff.html

I tend to look at this very much along the lines of Attack Ship's third scenario.

Alex Jones may go off the deep end a bit, but I am closer in line to his take on it than Domhoff's. Though I find the professor's intellectual rather than emotional approach much more tolerable. It's just that professorial types will never risk their peer approval by actually publicly acknowledging the efficacity of occult ritual beyond mere metaphor.

...if that!

Edited by: thurnandtaxis at: 7/16/06 2:50 am

Apparently he's also something of a "Dream Expert".

Weird!

Quote:
. William Domhoff, who goes by "Bill," studied dream research with Calvin Hall at the University of Miami, where he received his Ph.D. in psychology in 1962. Before that, he attended Duke University in North Carolina and Kent State University in Ohio (M.A., 1959). He has been teaching at the University of California at Santa Cruz since 1965.

Bill has published several articles on dreams in academic journals, some as a co-author with Hall. He wrote a book called The Mystique of Dreams (University of California Press, 1985) that debunks the widespread belief that the Senoi people of highland Malaysia practice dream control and have extraordinary mental health. He shows through anthropological evidence that "Senoi dream theory" -- as Americans know it through best-selling pop psych dream books -- is really American "we-can-do-and-control-anything" ideology. The dream control myth was projected onto the Senoi by an American adventurer who happened on them accidently, didn't know the language, and spent only a few weeks with them.

Bill's latest (2003) book on dreams is entitled The Scientific Study of Dreams: Neural Networks, Cognitive Development, and Content Analysis.

Bill's 1996 book, Finding Meaning in Dreams: A Quantitative Approach (Plenum Publishing Company) was the original basis for this Web site. It relies heavily on quantitative studies done earlier by Hall and more recently by Adam Schneider. The material in the book on cross-cultural findings , the consistency of dream content over years and decades , and the relationship between dreams and personal concerns are still the most comprehensive and up-to-date summaries of these literatures that are available. The complete text of the book is available on-line in the Dream Library on this Web site:
psych.ucsc.edu/dreams/Library/fmid.html

psych.ucsc.edu/dreams/About/bill.html

Pah, I just think the point that we're all trying to make is that regardless
of even the most skeptical take on the evidence there is fairly absolute proof being offered as to the fact that rich and powerful men DO dress up in robes and burn an effigy in front of a 40' statue of an owl at Bohemian Grove.

It's Weird and It's True.

as to what it all MEANS....well, THAT'S where the RI comes in.

Mr Arcadia,
yes witty, but the joke`s on you friend. JPT was written tongue-in-cheek in response to `drive-by poster`.

Anyway, If I may offer some advice?
