Kubrick's The Shining and the Monarch Program

I watched The Shining again tonight, and there is much there to see when viewed with "eyes wide shut."

Some thoughts:

-In the apartment in Boulder, there are pictures of rainbows decorating the walls, and Danny is brushing his teeth next to a green shower curtain - pay no mind to the man behind the curtain!

-In the game room at the Overlook, there is a poster on the wall that reads "Monarch." These immediately caught my eye, regarding the Monarch program and abuse induced multiple personality disorder as a form of mind control. Danny has developed Tony as an alter and actually reverts completely into Tony after being assaulted in room 237.

There are also two Gradys: Delbert and Charles. Two dead girls. Two Jacks (sane dad and psycho killer).

-For the first half of the film, Shelly Duvall is almost always dressed in blue, and in one scene, bright red boots (dorothy). Jack is usually in green.

There is so much, but I'm tired right now. The Monarch thing in conjunction with a boy with ESP who has developed an alter personality through abuse is just too much to be coincidence. Not that Kubrick ever allows coincidence anyways, it is all planned.

A friend of mine was most disturbed by the animal suit sex ghost scene. Why would he put that in there, he asked. My reaction was that it is just another indication of the ritual goings on at the black lodge Overlook, much like the costumed orgies in EWS. Any other thoughts?

Edited by: paradoxicalpariah at: 1/14/06 4:53 am

I forgot - Danny is wearing an Apollo 11 sweater in one scene. That had me laughing out loud, given the accusations that Kubrick filmed or consulted on the alleged fake moon landing films. I don't buy that particular conspiracy just yet, so my guess is, if those rumors were circulating yet back then, Kubrick put the shirt in The Shining to either fuel the fire or as a joke.

I had forgotten - the animal suit sex scene is right out of the book. And the title... "The Shining." There are people and places that "shine." Straight out of illuminati, occultic, etc, terminology. Much of the material for the film of course came from King's novel, and Kubrick chose it of all things to film. What are Steve and Stanley into? My instincts are that King has fumbled into things blindly in the dark while Stanley knew exactly what was under discussion. This is probably why King disliked Kubrick's version of the film so much.

... Art is just art. I don't think "The Shining" has anything to do with Illuminati, MK-ULTRA, or Project Monarch.

"Eyes Wide Shut" is a different beast altogether. But "The Shining" is a story about a haunted hotel, a man's struggle with alcoholism, and a child with psychic abilities. Any attempt to overlay mind control on it rings false (with me).

You could be right, of course. I just find it odd that the same filmmaker made a movie about an abused kid with an alternate personality, included a poster with Monarch! on it, and then later made Eyes Wide Shut.

I would love it if someone could freeze-frame that poster and somehow enlarge it, and post it. That is beyond my capabilities, I'm afraid.

Thanks, Pirx! I think it's a soldier in front of a tank. I'm unable to read what it says under "Monarch!" I hadn't even noticed the picture behind the girls. Good point... it is weird.

Kubrick the Prophet

Pan, I have been pretty surprised by your stubbornness lately. How is it you can boldly state that "art is just art" when it comes to Kubrick? Every single one of his movies has many layers. I personally think they are prophetic. We are currently about to see manifestations of many, if not all of his movies. 2001 and Project Stardust with it's alien stardust from 500 million miles away, which, incidentally, just landed this morning in Utah. (Andromeda Strain anyone?) Clockwork Orange is about to manifest with roving gangs of youths terrorizing citizens, etc.

I always immediately think of Diane Arbus Identical twins, Roselle, N.J. 1967 Haven't had a chance to fully investigate the connection yet. There might be something there, or maybe not.

http://www.valleyadvocate.com/gbase/Arts/content.html?oid=oid:39467

The poster on the wall behind the girls looks like Crowley's Lam or perhaps something Lovecraftian...shades of Cthulu - creepy nonetheless.

Here's an information-filled site about Kubrick movies, including 'The Shining'.

www.archiviokubrick.it/en...index.html

It's got a post-production script for the US release, among other things. King's critique of the movie interests me, as I've never found King (apart from "IT") to be all that compelling, but the Kubrick version of "The Shining" is one of the more viscerally terrifying movies I've ever seen.

-Sepka the Space Weasel

It's fine to speculate about Kubrick putting some sort of MK-ULTRA/MONARCH message in "The Shining." I just don't see it. I read the book, saw the movie, and I think the movie is an adaptation, with some stylistic flourishes, of King's basic premise -- which has nothing to do with MONARCH.

I agree that art often presages reality, and that Kubrick paid exquisite atttention to every detail of his films. And it's fine to speculate about an underlying message -- but I think many people who post here filter things through a very limited viewpoint -- i.e. anything remotely suggestive of ritual abuse, pedophilia, a ruling elite, or mind control is assumed to be a disguised "message" or a depiction of what the artist considers "real."
