The FBI at Guantanamo

I disagree about the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit being involved in torture refinements. I think those agents were legitimately shocked people of conscience. But I think they're under orders- and threat of criminal prosecution- not to talk to the press personally. I've never heard an interview with one of those agents, and the names of the investigators and writers of the report were redacted from the FBI documents that detailed the inhumane treatment.

That's a partial explanation for the lack of media focus on the FBI report. It's just a disembodied document, not attached to the actual American citizens who did the investigation work.

That in no way excuses the American news media, which has been presented time after time after time with opportunities to interview similar such sources, for instance the 3 successive teams of Army prosecutors who have refused to handle the cases of the Guantanamo detainees on the grounds that the cases are unconstitutional and in violation of ethical US Army procedures toward prisoners; the US Army defense counsel for the prisoners, who has horror stories to tell about his lack of access to the most basic means of serving his clients; and numerous other US Army whistleblowers and conscientious objectors, and disaffected CIA and other intelligence personnel.

(I know that some people contend that all such people are part of a rigged disinfo program. Come on, name one member of any of the prosecution teams protesting their ordered military assignments. Funny disinformation program, most Americans aren't even aware that such people exist. They get a blip one day, and they're gone. Over the course of a year, local dog shows get more column inches- not to mention cable TV airtime. As for the broadcast networks...)

I do know that the agents were from the Sacramento office. I also know that the Sacramento office has been through at least 3 changes of supervisor since 9-11. One happened in the months immediately following the first disclosures in the press from FBI sources about the treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo.

I I have no inside pipeline about that. I know all of this only by reading the local paper, the Sacramento Bee. It could possibly also be verified by going to the library and reading the FBI's own in-house periodical, I think it's entitled simply FBI. They're a monthly or bi-monthly magazine, and they may have a sidebar column about transfers, promotions, etc.

One of my big personal regrets of the past few years is never showing up in person at the FBI office to attempt to thank those people for telling the truth.

Edited by: robertdreed at: 9/28/06 10:28 pm
