Austria arrests Irving over Holocaust Thu Nov 17, 2005 4:15 PM GMT VIENNA (Reuters) - Historian David Irving, known for his controversial views on World War Two, has been arrested in Austria on suspicion of denying the Holocaust, an interior ministry spokesman said on Thursday. Irving was arrested on November 11 near the town of Hartberg in the southern province of Styria under a warrant issued in 1989, interior ministry spokesman Rudolf Gollia said. "He is on remand in Vienna," Gollia said. Asked what Irving had been arrested for, Gollia said: "It is to do with ... Holocaust denial." The spokesman declined to comment on whether or when he would be charged. A High Court ruling in 2000 rejecting Irving's libel action against an American professor and her publishers declared Irving "an active Holocaust denier ... anti-Semitic and racist". Denying the holocaust is a crime in Austria which carries a sentence of 1-10 years. Irving's Web site (www.fpp.co.uk) said he had been invited by students to address a university association in Vienna. He lost the case and the judge said in his summing up that he had never in all his born days seen such a total revision of history nor such pre-meditated malice towards the Holocaust survivors, not such calculated greed in making money out of falsification of history.

What about the other-than-Jewish victims? Don't they get any airtime? Gypsies. Homosexuals. Criminally insane. Jehovah's Witnesses. Mentally retarded. Anyone with handicaps. Those who helped hide any of the above groups. And a bunch more I can't remember right now. Falsification of history goes on all the time. How can anyone be prosecuted for this, without changing ALL the history books? There were bigger stories that have been covered up, such as: Queen Elizabeth the First killed off a million Irish to make room for the Scots there. And some people see the Potato Famine as a planned event to do the same, 200 years later. King Leopold of Belgium killed several hundred thousand in the Congo in the last decade of the nineteenth century. Mark Twain was the only Westerner to openly write against this. The Mongolian hordes created many mounds of human skulls a hundred feet high, or more, in Persia (modern Iran) and several other places in their reign of bloody conquest. Being highly mobile meant taking no prisoners. And notice I said "skulls" which meant exactly the picture I'm trying to paint. I'm not necessarily supporting someone's right to create an "it never happened" view of the Holocost, but wish to point out that neither story is the whole truth, his nor the "official" one. Genocide and Holocosts are much more common than anyone with a high-school education knows, and that goes for most college history classes as well. --MaryK

This is a total fallacy. Mary Tudor - known as 'Bloody Mary' - is the one who wantonly massacred UK subjects in her disastrous attempt to establish the rule of the Holy Roman Empire in Britain. Under her reign more subjects were massacred, burnt at the stake for 'heresy' or were indiscriminately tortured than under any other UK monarch. Her name 'Bloody Mary' speaks for itself. Elizabeth I by comparison avoided the Catholic excesses of her half sister and fought many successful battles to keep the Catholic armies of Spain, France and other European countries from invading the British shores. During the reign of Elizabeth I there were three major uprisings in Ireland, but all were crushed. The official numbers of fatalities has been put at between 1000 and 2,500 over the period of her reign. Profile: David Irving By Andrew Walker BBC News The arrest of David Irving, for allegedly denying that the Holocaust ever happened, is but the latest twist in a highly controversial career as an historian. He was once seen as the brightest new star in the historical firmament - an extraordinarily competent researcher, a brilliant linguist and a first class writer. But today, Mr Irving finds himself in a cell in Vienna, with a possible 20-year prison sentence hanging over his head. David John Caldwell Irving was born in 1938, the son of a lieutenant commander in the Royal Navy who had seen service at the battle of Jutland. Although he entered Imperial College, London, to study physics, he failed to graduate. He was rejected by the Royal Air Force as being medically unfit and decided, as an alternative to National Service, to move to Germany, finding employment as a steelworker in the Ruhr. Returning to Britain, he wrote a controversial first book, The Destruction of Dresden, which described the 1945 air raid on the city as "the worst single massacre in European history". AJP Taylor praised Irving's work The book was, nevertheless, popular and he followed it with a series of bestsellers, including The Mare's Nest and The Virus House, about the Nazis' atomic research programme. In 1968 he found himself in court following the publication of The Destruction of Convoy PQ17. Captain J E Broome, who commanded the doomed convoy's escort, sued for libel and won. But Mr Irving bounced back and, in 1977, produced the work for which he is probably best known - Hitler's War. The book looked at the conduct of World War II from Hitler's perspective, "from behind the Fuhrer's desk", as the author put it. He berated fellow historians for their idleness over research, as he had unearthed a vast collection of previously unexploited Nazi documents and had conducted many interviews with members of Hitler's personal staff while writing the book. Banned The vast work, which took 13 years to produce, contained the astounding thesis that, until late 1943, Hitler knew nothing of the Holocaust and that he never gave the order for the physical destruction of European Jewry. He offered £1,000 to anyone who could produce a written document showing that Hitler had given such an order. Indeed in the following years, Irving went even further, stating that gas chambers did not exist and that six million did not die. At the time, Irving drew plaudits from some distinguished historians. Hugh Trevor-Roper, author of The Last Days of Hitler, and the man who erroneously authenticated the bogus "Hitler diaries" wrote, "No praise can be too high for his indefatigable scholarly industry" and AJP Taylor commended his "good scholarship". Most, though, were outraged by what they saw as his unacceptable views. He underwent verbal attacks, the door of his house was smashed with a sledgehammer and was banned from Germany, Australia and Canada. Bankrupted Matters came to a head in 2000, when he took the American academic, Deborah Lipstadt, to court for libel after she branded him a "Holocaust denier" in her book, Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory. A key element in the Lipstadt case was a report compiled for the defence by Richard Evans, professor of Modern History at Cambridge University. His conclusion was damning. Mr Irving, surmised Professor Evans, had deliberately distorted and wilfully mistranslated documents, consciously used discredited testimony and falsified historical statistics. The Deborah Lipstadt libel case bankrupted Irving And he concluded: "Irving has fallen so far short of the standards of scholarship customary amongst historians that he does not deserve to be called a historian at all." And, if the judge's comments, branding David Irving "a racist, an anti-Semite and an active Holocaust denier" were not enough in themselves, the financial cost, an estimated £3m, bankrupted him. Irving has recently moved out of his former Mayfair home into rented accomodation. Today, he views himself as a champion of what he calls Real History. It is time, in the name of truth and out of respect for the genuine sufferings of the victims of the Second World War, that historians return to the proven methods of historical criticism, and that the testimony of the Holocaust "eyewitnesses" be subjected to rigorous scrutiny rather than unquestioning acceptance. I have been looking at this stuff with growing amazement at the amount and level of garbage people spread around to incite hatred. I don't know the legal history of hate speech in US law, and if such "treatise" is a cause of legal action against writer/spreader. I read CHomsky's corresponence following Werner Cohn's accusation that he is a holocaust denier. And I also know that Israel government position is that this kind of crap is inconsequential in terms of security, so I don't tend to espouse legal action against provocatuers, this usually grants them a halo of saints. I just wonder where this is coming from. I tend to think that the German government is allowing it. (namely, the part about Auschwitz being overblown). Today, headlines in Israel inform that Germany gave additional 2 nuclear submarines to Israel, against so called Iranian nuclear threat. THe newspapers tell that this gift was a result of investigation leading to German factories assisting Saddam Hussein's scud missile systems that hit Israel. (despite obligation to the contrary). The Germans, as all other Western colonizers and meddlers in the Middle East are playing both sides of the conflict...well, the Germans I met, post ww2 people are all very compassionate to Hitler. This is all politics, including the present day trials against Zundel, the publisher of Israel Shamir (in France), and IRving. Since now Israel has taken the role of representing the Jewish dignity (so to speak), the discussion is raised to the level of governments and deals and trade offs. As I said, somewhere else, the interests of ISrael (government) and the interest of the Diaspora Jews, especially the US community, are far from being similar on this issue. I would speculate that the sudden arrest of the old Irving could be related to Israel's resentment of Brittish legal attack on IDF generals. Because, the arrest in Austria is - more than anything else - a blow to Brittish legal system's integrity and repuation. THe Zundel affair is even more complex in terms of trade offs with Canada and Germany (vis a vis Israel). Since some people on this board actually believe some of the very racist stuff, I think there is no point in addressing the content as it will only feed their prejudices anyway. Troubling for me, is the cynical use EVERYONE is doing in this issue, like a "token" that can be exchanged. Of course the Israeli government is no less party to this "market" and commodification of a terrible tragedy that should be studied and commemorated on a universal level. Usually this board treats the issue as it should be treated, a warning for humanity from certain bad ways of governing, which did not die yet, rather took a different shape and locale. First of all, I have read David Irving. He is not a "denier." The fact that people are on here bitching and saying things like anyone who listens to this guy 'ought to have their head examined' is a pretty ridiculous statement to find on the RI board. Irving is a revisionist if he's anything. And aren't we all revisionists these days? A majority of the news we're fed on a daily basis is false. Should we get arrested for emailing tapes of Cheney and Bush pre-war fear mongering mushroom cloud lies? Its the same thing. Irving was involved in the recent lab tests on the Auschwitz gas chamber walls for traces of gas. There was none. The ADL and Liptstadt have been furious ever since and have attacked not only Irving, but the scientists involved in the testing. The fact that zionists flip out about any investigations into their claims, while they do everything in their power to take away our rights, should tell you something.
