i'd be excited by these poll results too, except...so what? i'm almost inclined to think this poll is actually more disconcerting than a poll which would indicate that most americans believe in the 2004 results. think about it: most americans are willing to acknowledge that our rightful role in the 2004 elections was usurped by bushco and the PTB, yet what have most americans done about it? absolutely nothing, and i fail to see how collective recognition of this common understanding is likely to incite any action a year and a half after the fact.

a historical comparison: when the supreme court mandated racial integration in brown v. board of education, the southern right was up in arms...violent protests on school grounds, riots in the streets, governors refusing to comply...the national guard had to be called in to enforce! and this continued from the time the opinion came down in 1954 until well into the 1960's.

meanwhile, 50 years later the court hands down bush v. gore, and even though we on "the left" (or whatever you want to call us) - indeed, "most americans", it seems - we all knew the holding was contrived bullshit that would screw us harder than we could imagine not just for the next four years but forever...but what did we do? why haven't we been rioting on the white house lawn for the past year and a half?

i guess my point is that acknowledgement without remedial action doesn't mean much. if most americans believed that the 2004 election was resolved legitimately, then at least the lack of action could be (at least partially) excused by a "forgive them, Father, they know not what they do" approach. we know what we're doing, and, more importantly, we know what we're not doing.
