Now, let me report to you what I've discovered prowling Washington tonight on the CIA Leakgate story, the "October Surprise" scandal that threatens the survival of the G.W. Bush/Cheney administration.

Political insiders tracking this scandal are reporting that the GOP and neo-con political machines, which have also targeted Travis County, Texas District Attorney Ronnie Earle in retaliation for his indictments of Tom DeLay and other Texas GOP operatives, are also setting their sights on CIA Leakgate special prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald.

The word inside the Beltway is that if Fitzgerald delivers indictments against senior White House officials he will face unspecified "consequences."

"It's a sign of desperation on the part of the White House and Karl Rove's machine," said one individual familiar with the case. Another informed observer pointed out that Fitzgerald "is the last guy the White House would want to threaten with retaliation."

Tomorrow, Rove is scheduled to testify for the fourth time before the grand jury investigating the CIA leak and the associated conspiracy to obstruct justice by the White House Iraq Group (WHIG). whooboy...no, you don't want to threaten

Postby nashvillebrook » Fri Oct 14, 2005 2:12 pm

an irishman. we have no concept of self-preservation. we'll take you down with us, carotid artery in teeth -- eyeballs on fingernails like puppets. it's irrational to other folk; but the irish have a diff take on "rational." www.ezboard.com/images/em.../devil.gif

it's a given that they would be after Fitz -- surprising only that it took this long to catch wind of the aggression.

here's more:

There are reports that former Secretary of State Colin Powell provided the grand jury with a mother lode of evidence on the role of the WHIG in its conspiracy against Valerie Plame Wilson, Ambassador Joseph Wilson, and the lies and forgeries used to lay the groundwork for the war against Iraq.

Legal experts believe that with political pressure being brought to bear on his investigation, it is in Fitzgerald's interest to issue any indictments as soon as possible and not request an extension for the grand jury, which is due to adjourn on October 28.

_______________

we KNOW fitz is angling to extend. he's not backing down. cue tom petty. colin powell -- anyone else thought about his value to this investigation? i have. you KNOW he was humiliated at the UN. i'd sing like christina agulara in the shower. i'd LOVE to read his remarks to the GJ. ah, it's gonna be a good weekend. i'm going to stop by the wine store and get my bottle of bubbly -- must have it on hand just in case. www.ezboard.com/images/em.../happy.gif

Hey nashvillepaddy,

Quote:
it's a given that they would be after Fitz -- surprising only that it took this long to catch wind of the aggression

.

Seems to me that as long as the controlling law was the Intelligence Agent Identity Act they were pretty safe. It's only these last two weeks that they have realised their jeopardy. Essentially since the David Johnston et al piece in the NYT broke the taboo on the Espionage Act.

Colin Powell. I dunno.
He IS one of them.
Knighthood, Scottish roots (ahem), his own coat-of-arms, quoting Albert Pike.
And remember he was bugged and heard saying to Jack Straw "Let's hope this doesn't blow up in our faces" as he prepared for the UN presentation.

between the fighting irish stereotype and the law

Postby glubglubglub » Fri Oct 14, 2005 4:46 pm

threatening fitz is probably a bad idea...and that it's made it down to us is probably a good sign, all things considered -- the dastardly thing to do is off him silently, but by making a threat the threatmaker sets him/herself up to a whole 'nother can of legal worms, plus pisses fitz off. And, of course, now that the rumblings of a threat are on the public record, well, it's that much more difficult to do something truly nasty...which is why good fighters (what bushco ain't, really) don't telegraph punches.

That said, my suspicion has been that because this is a cia-neocon squabble, basically, the company's probably filled Fitz in on all kinds of deep background, so he knows what's out there to investigate. There's a difference between what you know and what's provable in court, and there's a difference between what's true and what you could discover just by interrogating your suspects...so my guess is he's been given help finding questions worth asking.

Also, I think Powell is pissed enough to throw some bones fitz's way: among other things, he'll now never be the first black president (despite all his public disavowals that he'd be interesting), and his international reputation is in tatters. The sort of gentrified retirement-job that diplomats usually slide into is sorta out of his reach, too, b/c being able to successfully lobby foreign powers is much more useful than being able to successfully lobby domestic ones.

dbeach,
MUST get off that number.
RawStory is reporting mass dissent inside the NYT newsroom (ties into that Johnston story as an act of rebellion)

Quote:
Concern pervades New York Times newsroom over Judith MillerJohn Byrne

There’s a feeling of unease at the Times.

Veteran New York Times reporter Judith Miller’s one-woman crusade to protect her White House source in a CIA leak inquiry has stirred passions among Times staffers not seen since the Jayson Blair scandal, when the unsuspecting paper ran dozens of fictionalized articles.

Conversations with nearly a dozen Times reporters revealed a scarred landscape of discontent. Few reporters were willing to go on the record, but none who spoke with RAW STORY said they supported Miller. Many voiced worries that the paper’s editor, Bill Keller, was sacrificing his own integrity to protect her

More rawstory.com/news/2005/Un..._1014.html
