opponent of Blair dies of 'hear attack'

Robin Cook, who left the British cabinet over the Iraq war and has consistently opposed Blair, died yesterday on a Scottish mountainside of a 'heart attack'.

On the same front page of the Independent that announces his death, there's larger bolder headline:

Quote:
Intelligence Chiefs warn Blair of UK Insurgency

New Wave of Attacks suspected

Thousands of young moslems 'trained'

Ministers bid to win hearts and minds

It tells its terrified readers that there are at least 10,000 potential terrorists resident in the UK.

Inside the front page there's a small announcement that there are going to be as many as '400 more armed police' on the streets of London'. And the only fear expressd is that the police might be 'overstretched'.

In the Comments section there is one weak demur from the official line - suggesting mildly that some of the proposed new legislation might be a bit extreme.

The Indy is our principal - indeed only - 'anti-establishment' newspaper (allowing the oxymoron for a moment). It opposed the Iraq war and did a lot to publicise the nonsense of the WMD claims. But since 7/7 it's gone over without a fight.

Interesting isn't it

Ellie
