Hmmm.....
VERY interesting, alright.
The best current volcano archive I could find, Volcano World, updated weekly from reports (www.volcano.si.edu/reports/usgs/) by the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program and the US Geological Survey's Volcano Hazards Program, at:
volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/cu...rent.html,
as of June 9 only lists some 49 volcanos as having a history of eruptions this year, 2006;

That contrasts with the site you cited that lists 60 'active' volcanos;

IMO, I think there's some exaggeration going on by listing as 'erupting' many volcanos that have only shown 'recent' activity -- whether this is willful sensationalism or a more open-ended crieria about what constitutes 'erupting' I can't say.

The Smithsonian USGS Weekly report cites the following current volcanic activity:

7-13 June 2006
New Activity/Unrest: | Bulusan, Philippines | Canlaon, Philippines | Heard, Australia | Merapi, Indonesia | Sakura-jima, Japan | Tongariro, New Zealand

Ongoing Activity: | Kilauea, USA | Semeru, Indonesia | Soufrière Hills, Montserrat | St. Helens, USA | Suwanose-jima, Japan | Tungurahua, Ecuador | Ubinas, Perú

That's 13 identified areas/sites with reports of new and ongoing activity;

If this were an unusually high level of volcanic activity, I'd expect the Smithsonian or Volcano World sites to at least make a passing reference to such, but they don't.

Perhaps the article Rense is linked to is engaging in some fear-mongering?

On the other hand, the Smithsonian site clearly states its list is not a comptehensive list of all volcanos that have had activity during the past week, but only those that meet its criteria (listed: see www.volcano.si.edu/report...claimers).

The Smithsonian Volcanic Activity Report also has links to other nation's volcanic reports with activity that doesn't meet its reporting criteria.

I'd be interested in seeing what other people find out;
Starman
