Quote:
It is standard military practice not to display your losses because it is a morale gift to the enemy.

Remember the big sheet put over the hole in the side of the USS Cole? Standard operating procedure.

That is why the Pentagon will never show what happened there and is instead just allowing the fact that something did to motivate its military-intelligence community for righteous revenge.

The additional confusion over the details of what happened there helps to slow the 9/11 truth movement which is an enemy of the Pentagon because the truth would utterly demoralize their people.

With all respect, HMW, I'm not sure I get what you're saying. Are you saying that flight 77 is on the tapes, but they're hiding them just because showing the impact of flight 77 really hitting would hurt morale of the troops and end the confusion among conspiracy theorists? Or are you saying that flight 77 might not be on there and revealing that would devastate the troops (and the country) and embolden the truth movement?

If the former, I'm not sure I get it. If displaying your losses is a morale gift to the enemy, then why allow the film of the twin towers hitting over and over again to be shown? (Note that while the footage is in private hands, the govt has made no effort to suppress it or confiscate it like they did with Citgo and the hotel. Just the opposite in fact, it is freely shown routinely without objection of any kind.) That's a much bigger morale gift to the enemy than anything at the Pentagon. The fact that those are civilian targets and not military is irrelevant if the issue is what consitutes a morale gift to the enemy. Hitting the towers (and bringing them down) is a huge gift.

Moreover, they have shown the hit at the Pentagon. The problem is not showing the explosion or the hole it created (which had no tarp covering it), but getting a clear picture of the physical object that hit it. In other words, if the morale has to do with not displaying your losses, then that's already been done. It's merely the object, not the effect of the object, that needs to be revealed.

And the towers getting hit was huge motivation for revenge for a lot of people, so I have to think the military would be motivated much more, not less, by seeing clear pictures of the real thing. Cf. Severe Visability (not offered for it's truth, but just to show potential low morale on troops who question what hit the Pentagon).

Much more importantly, however, showing the footage would dispel all of the doubt that exists about what happened in the civilian and diplomatic world, which on balance the govt would much rather do than not do. Now I frequently see the argument that the Pentagon is hiding the tapes and satellite footage because they want to create confusion and muddy the waters with conspiracy theorists. I have to say I think that's mostly nonsense. The govt would far prefer to be able to release clear and convincing pictures from multiple angles of the pentagon attack (like WTC) for both domestic and foreign public relations. So I think the idea that the US govt would rather play peek-abo with conspiracy theorists instead of releasing clear and unmistakable footage of the Pentagon attack is wildly offbase (it also assumes this decision was made before or immediately at the time of the attacks, another rather implausible scenario in my view).

The govt has had multiple opportunities to give any conceivable national security justification for not releasing the tapes, and yet it hasn't done so. All it came up with was the completely preposterous notion (both legally and factually) that it might prejudice the Moussaoui case, which is, in any event, totally moot at this point.

That said, do keep in mind that there could be any number of nefarious reasons why they're hiding the tapes at this point, and they may very well have nothing to do with the identity of the plane hitting the building.

Edited by: NewKid at: 10/30/06 9:44 pm
