I signed my old camper up for temporary housing..

...what are the rest of you doing besides pissing and moaning? Got a spare bedroom or a vacant tent now Camp Casey is done? If they can get them here (I have a vision problem for driving), I will provide my small camper, electricity and food.

www.hurricanehousing.org

I have an occupied 2-bedroom house and a '68 camper. It has to be better than what those poor souls have.

What to do

Postby GDN01 » Fri Sep 02, 2005 11:01 pm

I'm going to an area north of New Orleans to start clearing property so people can have a safe place to take shelter. I'm arranging temporary shelter for 5 families who will be bussed out of the astrodome and on their way to permanent housing.

I understand your offer to house people in Iowa but I can tell you the survivors of Katrina aren't ready to go so far away from their homes. Yes, their homes are probably destroyed and eventually they may be dispersed clear across this country. But they have lost so much. They are trying to find their family members and their friends and going to Iowa or some other distant location is not what many of them want. I have offers from all across the country from people who are willing to drive busses here and pick people up - but the people want to stay as close as they can to their home.

I'm dealing with this disaster by staying as busy as I can helping others.

GDN01, you are an angel, but if you find anyone desperate enough to come this far I will pay the gas costs, ok?

It's heartening to read this.

I have no resources to offer anyone in the midst of this disaster, I can't drive, and I'm very far away. I feel in a sort of paralized shock like I did after 9/11, and I'm not supposed to be shocked by anything.

I'm surprised at the lack of the discussion about it where I live, but perhaps I'm just out of the loop. That is something to do, find the loop.

Someone I know is missing in NO. I hope he is ok. Not that most of us haven't, but he's already had enough shit sandwiches in life.

GDN01, pw, the camper is here, very...rural...with electricity. Time is limited, as area is midwest, winter starting after end of Oct. After that time, it is my garage.
