I'm with Joe on this one: Putin's snickering comments about rape could have been made by 7 out of 10 males in these circumstances, if they thought nobody could hear them. Maybe he was trying to establish a sort of macho camraderie, trying to get his guests to relax. In any case, I think that his comment says a lot more about what's going on underneath the radar in our societies than specifically about him.

Grabbing the kid and kissing his stomach, + his subsequent explanation, creeped me out a lot more.

I don't think that Putin has a son -- if so, what's up with that St. Clair article?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vla...sonal_life

"elite deviance"

My comment about elite deviance was in response to the article on Putin's reported behavior on the rafting trip that was discussed in the Counterpunch article.

As to Putin's off-handed comments on rape- the man is a head of state. His remarks were made at an official function in the company of others representing governments, which are imbued with powers and responsibilities that behoove them to conduct themselves at a more civilized and compassionate manner than the "average bloke" misogynists of the world.

I emailed St Clair (at sitka@comcast.com) yesterday to ask the question, but I won't hold my breath waiting for a reply. It's something...heck, I've just discovered, St Clair is an editor of Counterpunch, so he's got a few good reasons to want to get to the bottom of this...

I guess maybe could have some basis in fact, have originally been about someone else + mistakenly or deliberately attributed to Putin? strange stuff.

Interesting, and provocative, analysis/commentary by Israel Shamir here

In part:

Quote:
This is the background to the new attacks on Putin, now by the liberal feminists. According to their version, Putin said: “What a mighty man [Katzav] turns out to be! He raped 10 women - I would never have expected this from him. He surprised us all - we all envy him!” This was supposedly overheard by a Kommersant newspaper reporter. (That paper is owned by the violently anti-Putin oligarch Berezovsky.) Anna Shulik, a correspondent of Israeli Channel 9, actually recorded and broadcasted a somewhat different version of Putin's statement: “Regards to your president. He surprised us all. We all envy him.” The key word rape, which turns bonhomie into vulgarity, is just absent on the tape.

I myself have been on this same multi day trip with John several times.

St. Clair documented his own trip in a six part CounterPunch series here, which I highly recommend to those interested in how water resource issues in the West will be fought as an early front on the climate change cataclysm.

www.counterpunch.org/stclair09042006.html

Weisheit is St. Clair's source, and he confirms to me that all in St. Clair's story is 100% true, and that it was he who told St. Clair of the Putin incidents involving his harrassment of the river guides. John was actually scheduled to be the trip leader for Putin, and was called away at the last minute to rescue another boater at the Colorado/Green River confluence. As a result, Putin's party was taken down by a young woman in her twenties, along with a paddle captain who was a Mormon college student. John tells me that these women were "truly frightened for their lives by this whole mafioso-like experience".

So the story is absolutely true. As to whether the young man with Putin was really his son or not, I cannot say, but I have asked John to tell me if he can discover anything further.

So I'll follow up later with more info - but I assure the board that the story as St. Clair reported it is unimpeachable, at least in its description of the events goes.

And of course, erosupplier, this John Weisheit is prepared to confirm this story to someone other than to an anonymous poster on this board? I haven't read the article myself, to be honest, but does St. Clair name John Weisheit as his source?

A story told by someone to someone, is usually referred to as "gossip" or "rumor", not fact.

Until this story gets based on something besides hot air, let's just file it under "hit piece" in our "malice" cabinet, right next to the garbage bin, shall we?
