I was reading through some of the reporting on the Debra Lafave case, a female teacher who had sex with a (underage) student, and came across some odd statements that i thought might be worth discussing. To be clear i am not trying to excuse her conduct or minimise the impact this could have had on the child in question. the basics of the case: <blockquote>Quote:<hr>Tampa, Florida (AP) -- A female teacher whose sexual liaisons with a 14-year-old middle school student made tabloid headlines will avoid prison. Lafave apologized during the hearing, saying that accepts full responsibility for her actions. If convicted at trial, she could have faced up to 15 years in prison on each count. The plea agreement also was designed to resolve similar charges pending in Marion County stemming from a sexual act with the student there. The boy told investigators the two had sex in a classroom at Greco Middle School in Temple Terrace, her Riverview town house and once in a car while his cousin drove them around Marion County. John Fitzgibbons, Lafave's Attorney: “The officials from the Temple Terrace Police Department took photos of the genital area of client. Very explicit photos, pornographic photos and then attempted to photograph her breasts.” Timmerman agreed with the state and won't allow the testimony about the photographs. Mike Sinacore,Hillsborough State Attorney's Office: “It would be a side show, a complete sideshow over the photographs.” But the main show will hold plenty of interest, because of the insanity defense. That means Lafave's life will be an open book. John Fitzgibbons, Lafave's Attorney: “All the dirty laundry is out there. The most personal things in my client’s life the psychiatrist will talk about, as you can imagine. "Okay. was it more than just kissing then?" Oh yeah. oh, yeah" Martinez revealed she was not LeFave's only female lover.  "Well, even after we split and she went to Bloomingdale, she dated another girl after me." LeFave's husband and co-workers all talked about her revealing style of dress and her obsession with her weight. Some went as far as saying she had an eating disorder. ...it used to be a teen boy who bedded an older woman got high fived rather than her going to jail, even house arrest. One of my best friends in high school never tired of telling how he boinked his English teacher his junior year. He'd skipped a grade so he was only 16. He wasn't what you'd call traumatized. What IS this world coming to?
