Congressman Mark Foley resigns today...

Postby dqueue » Fri Sep 29, 2006 4:26 pm

He co-chaired the Missing and Exploited Children Caucus. He's a republican from Florida. He resigned after a congressional page came forward with suggestive emails from the Congressman...

DailyKos diary
TPM Muckraker

Sorry about the title typo...

Edited by: dqueue at: 9/29/06 11:08 pm

More than email...

Postby AlanStrangis » Fri Sep 29, 2006 5:14 pm

The original emails seemed 'off' but not entirely damning. But apparently ABC got a hold of a bunch of explicit instant messages as well...

ABC News

Quote:
Saying he was "deeply sorry," Congressman Mark Foley (R-FL) resigned from Congress today, hours after ABC News questioned him about sexually explicit internet messages with current and former congressional pages under the age of 18.

If ever there was a Congressperson who needed their votes, junkets, and professional relationships thoroughly scrutinized, it's this guy.

www.visi.com/juan/congres...6&site=ctc

Actually, there are probably more deserving candidates, but you start looking under a rug by lifting up a corner. I wonder about Foley's backers in the Palm Beach GOP, for instance.

Edited by: robertdreed at: 9/29/06 8:05 pm

Can the original author of this thread change the title? The Congressman involved in the scandal is Mark Foley.

Tom Foley was the last Democratic House Speaker.

Tom Roley could refer to "Tom Roley, Senior Advisor, Appeals, Internal Revenue Service, United States Department of the Treasury" ...or possibly Tom Roley, Hazelwood School principal ...or Tom Roley, master plumbing contractor.

The scandal was revealed by someone within the Bush White House. I wonder if he's the sacrificial lamb for this week's Abramoff revelations.

Remember, House leadership knew about these transcripts for 11 months. There are a total of 36 pages worth of logs which the Florida Republican party just pored over. The Bush FBI was tipped off months ago too.

BTW....check out this new DailyKos user's diary from Sunday, 24 September. Here it is.

Edited by: dranek7 at: 9/29/06 8:18 pm

If you think what has been released isn't damning read this conversation between a 54-year-old Congressman and a 16-year-old page boy:

abcnews.go.com/images/WNT/02-02-03b.pdf

Stickdog,

That exchange was from a different pageboy in 2003. Apparently there are many others.

I still think that there may be something more to this than Foley's being caught with his pants down. A dKos user number 102541 out of +/- 106000 aptly named WHInternNow, tried to launch this story on Sunday afternoon. This writer's first comment was written on 5 Sept, the day after a post on a tiny relatively new blog. Apparently, the blog's author put out a request for info on any current congressional intern sex scandals. Suddenly by Thursday 22 Sept., there had been at least three separate tips submitted. By Sunday, the emails were published.

Foley is a criminal and predator, but some strange stuff's happened this week:

The Bob Woodward's "State of Denial", the Clinton Fox interview, the release of the House report on Abramoff (citing 485 WH visits), the Diebold whistleblowing, and the chorus of accusations against George Allen (the admin's post-Bush pick). Then you can also consider the total Democratic capitulation on Bush's torture bill.

It all leaves me with a dizzying array of questions:

How far will the Bushites go to maintain their vice-grip on Congress and the courts? Who is Foley protecting by taking the fall? Why did the Republicans cover this up for a year? or years? What is Rove's role in this? Mehlman's? Scotty MacClellan's? Bulldog Guckert's?

Bingo. This is a high-frequency cycle. Add to the mix this Kos diary. It picks up a Woodward nugget, that Tenet and Black went personally to Condi Rice at the White House in July, 2001, to convey their urgency that something bad was about to happen. She requested a study and report...

Jamie Gorelick claims the 9/11 coverup commission was unaware of this July meeting; else, it surely would have made the report. So, urgent July meeting... PDB on August 6...

My question is, why did this guy resign instead of vigorously denying any wrongdoing, like a good GOP congressman should?

More bloggers are starting to pickup on the possibility that the Foley messages were possibly leaked by a staffer in the WH and leaning away from it coming from an intern.

Also, Foley's predilections were well known for many years and GOP Congressman Shimkus warned pages to avoid him. After spreading the warnings, he actively encouraged pages to socialize with Foley.

Americablog and MyDD posted an official transcript of Foley's remarks after one such social event:

Quote:
FOLEY: John [one of the pages] was the highest bidder on lunch with Mark Foley. Maybe you all do not know this story, but John had paid considerable sums to dine with me. I had offered to take the winning bidder to lunch in the Members' dining room. Then I heard how much John Eunice paid. And I said, ``John, there is no way in the world after you committed so much money to have lunch with me that I would dare take you downstairs to eat in the Members' dining room.'' I said, ``Where do you want to go?'' He says, without reservation, ``Morton's.'' I said, ``Morton's? Like in Morton's Steakhouse?'' He said, ``Oh, would that be too much?'' I said, ``Oh, no, we'll go.'' I said, ``Call your mother, get permission, make sure she notifies the Clerk and we will go to Morton's.'' And so we proceeded to cruise down in my BMW to Morton's.

Btw, John Eunice is a city councilmember of Valdosta, GA. He had paged for Saxby Chambliss. He's the one with the absurdly large bowtie.

Edited by: dranek7 at: 10/1/06 8:51 pm
