Sarabite: sorry, I meant no harm by using the word "inflammatory." Indeed, I think it *should* be inflammatory--there's much to get "burned up" about! I simply meant as opposed to the straight journalism of the little articles in Catholic World News. Please accept my apology.

At any rate, I, too lived in New Mexico, although it's been about 17 years or so since I moved away. I really don't want to say too much that would identify her, but my mother was a public servant who had direct knowledge of what went on at the monastery and around the state. She once told me a story that was incredible, and I'm wondering if you've heard of this. Unfortunately it's been many years and my memory is rather fuzzy...

She told me of a man, who I recall as being either a defrocked priest or a priest, who lived on a ranch in the middle of nowhere, I want to say in the western part of the state. He served as a "foster parent" for literally hundreds of boys, over a period of years. There were numerous allegations of sexual abuse against him, yet the State kept covering it up and allowing him to foster. My mother made it sound almost as if he'd abuse a boy for a few weeks, grow tired of him, send him back to whatever institution had previously been his home, and basically order up another boy who'd be delivered to him, pronto. Unfortunately, she wasn't in a position to take any legal action against him, and soon after she discovered the whole sordid story she left her position anyway, and moved away from New Mexico.

Does this story ring any bells with you or anyone else reading this? I'm sorry, I haven't had time to fully investigate your website and its resources--perhaps the information is already there, and perhaps you could point me in the right direction. It would be great to hear that the man was eventually arrested and put in prison.
