MOSCOW, Oct. 19 — President Vladimir V. Putin has a penchant for making pithy, acerbic, sometimes coarse comments. On Wednesday a microphone inadvertently left on during a brief appearance with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert of Israel captured his views on the sex scandal involving Israel’s president.

According to published accounts by Agence France-Presse late Wednesday and Kommersant and The Jerusalem Post today, Mr. Putin was heard saying, “Say hello to your president,” to Mr. Olmert, referring to President Moshe Katsav, who could face criminal charges that he raped and assaulted two former employees. Mr. Putin added, “He really surprised us.” The microphone was quickly turned off as reporters were ushered from the room, but the news organizations reported that Mr. Putin went on.

“We did not know he could deal with 10 women,” he said, according to the Post and Agence France-Presse accounts, apparently referring to the complaints by several women that Mr. Katsav harassed them or worse.

Kommersant’s version — citing the remarks in Russian — was cruder. “He turned out to be quite a powerful man,” the paper’s reporter in the official Kremlin pool, Andrei Kolesnikov, quoted Mr. Putin as saying. “He raped 10 women. I never expected it from him. He surprised all of us. We all envy him.”

The accounts suggested that Mr. Putin’s remarks prompted laughter from the Russian and Israeli diplomats in the gilded conference room inside the Kremlin, where the two leaders went on to discuss Middle East policy and other issues for two and a half hours. The Post reported that Mr. Olmert responded by saying, “I wouldn’t be jealous of him.”

www.nytimes.com

The mind boggles...

Quote:
It may be a chilling coincidence that Anna Politkovskaya was murdered on Vladimir Putin's birthday, but her friends and supporters are in little doubt that her dogged, gloomy reporting of the sinister turn Russia has taken under what she called his “bloody” leadership was what led to her body being dumped in the lift of her Moscow apartment block.

...She often said that with a KGB officer as president, the least you could do was to smile sometimes, to show the difference between him and you.

From "What is happening to Russia" thread
( p216.ezboard.com/frigorou...6619.topic )
"recently shot journalist" story:
www.economist.com/obituar...id=8023316

Greencrow,I think he's being literal, and DOES envy him. He's that kind of guy.

[link=http://www.counterpunch.org/stclair09092006.html]www.counterpunch.org/stclair09092006.html[/link]

"The Moab river guide community is still shaking its head from its close encounter with the Russian president and former KGB man. "We get a lot of whacked-out people coming down the river, but Putin really is a dangerous guy, a real mobster," a guide told me.

"His packs were loaded with guns, vodka and tens of thousands of dollars in cash," the guide said. "He seemed to be a little on edge. He was a real bully. He was drunk much of the time and bossed people around as if they were his personal slaves. They refused to use the Groover. They pissed and shat wherever they wanted. They fired off their guns. They caught channel catfish and bashed their heads in with rocks."

Putin and his son were soon bored with the redbrick canyons and Class five rapids. "By the third day, Putin demanded that the guides call in a helicopter to have his party picked up and flown out. Then he got drunk and began to threaten the guides. He started bragging about how many people he had personally killed. More than 40, he said."

The rafts finally exited Cataract and motored across 30 miles of Lake Powell's flat water to the marina complex at Hite The next step on the Putties' tour was supposed to be a four-wheeler excursion tearing up the desert in the bizarre Needles District of Canyonlands. But Putin opted for a more traditional form of initiation for his son, straight out of Notes from the Underground. From the Hite marina, he placed a call to Las Vegas.

"Get us some whores," Putin shouted into his cellphone. "Price is no object.""

fonofidl, welcome to the board, and thanks for that remarkable story by St Clair that I'd missed. (The link is broken in your post; it's found here. (For making links on the board, try the "link" button on the left of a post's edit window.)

More from St Clair:

A couple of years ago Vladimir Putin journeyed to the American Southwest to take his son on an initiation ritual. The boy's mother is now an American citizen. First stop was a big game ranch in Texas, where Putin and Jr blasted zebras, antelopes and bison. To think that some people are still skeptical of the concept of "elite deviance"...

Re: ...

I think this is very different to elite deviance.

It seems to be a male thing in general, not all males for sure, but its a nasty undercurrent of masculinity, or maybe failed masculinity.

The idea that rape and sex are somehow similar and represent the internal machismo. Who'd have thought he had it in him to fuck 10 women, doesn't sound that different in intent to what Putin was saying - to me, but then I wasn't there and have basically gleaned all I know about the issue via this site.

And to me thats a more serious issue than elite deviance.

Cos its not just an elite issue. Its about lack of respect for other humans as humans, and that is something that is epidemic and endemic in our society.

The fact that everyone says "oh this is typical elite deviance" is missing the point that Putin's views are something a shitload of men hold, many of them about as far from the elites as possible.

Even males who (i would hope) are repulsed by rape have made similar comments in my presence over the years, and in some cases they are just trying to shock and be as crass as possible. But others, well you have to wonder, would that prick be serious, and if so should I shoot him?

As far as Putin is concerned the child kissing issue is far more sus. What he said at that press conference is just a typical male dickhead comment.

It might be indicative of some seriously wrong ideas in Putins head, but to think those idea's come just cos he's an elite from the "old enemy" Russia... thats just wrong. Those ideas infect the male mind in all societies and are pretty fucking far from OK in that context.

How do you know your neighbour or the bloke you just passed in the street isn't thinking the same thing?
