Your zeal for falling hook line and sinker for the old chestnuts of meticulous UK counter-intelligence never fails to amaze me AntiAristo.

Wallis Warfield, later Duchess of Windsor, was the niece of Elizabeth "Bessie" TRUMAN, nee Wallace, wife of President Harry S Truman. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President John F Kennedy on 31 May 1961 during the Kennedy's visit to Paris, France - en route to their London visit. The medal, citation and accompanying photographs are in the ownership of her heir. The President Harry S Truman Memorial Library and Museum used to keep a copy of the documents associated with this as some of the photographs show Bessie Truman alongside Wallis and the Kennedys.

Bessie Truman herself was awarded the UK's George Cross - the nation's second highest medal for valor after the Victoria Cross - on the occasion of her 75th birthday.

A very reliable source of information is Margaret Truman Daniel - Harry and Bessie's only child. She is a prolific crime writer and married to a former journalist Clifton Daniel.

Her cousin Ian Curtis Truman is married to the daughter/heir of Wallis and David. They hold all the UK personal papers relating to the Windsors.

Wallis first met David Saxe-Coburg-Gotha when he was Prince of Wales in 1934 when he was a guest of the Roosevelts in the US. Harry S Truman introduced the pair, the photographs of this first encounter are in the Royal Collection at the Royal Archives in Windsor Castle. Contact the Curator in you want to verify this information.

After their marriage Wallis and David were asked by the UK Prime Minister to approach the Hitler regime with a view to sounding it out on rapprochement.

The UK Government's foreign policy of the day was APPEASEMENT. David spoke excellent German, as did all his brothers, and went on the trip to the Fuhrer as an emissary of the UK Cabinet. The letters of accreditation for this trip are also in the Royal Archive - in case you ever get the urge to actually check some information. Others are in the UK Public Records Office.

A recent BBC TV programme featured an interview with the son of the Windsors' official bodyguard, an ex-UK police officer who accompanied them on the German trip. The programme showed the many items of memorabilia bequeathed to him by the late Duke, including photos of the German visit. The bodyguard's interview with the UK press in the 1960s mentioned Wallis and David's wry riposte to questions from the UK press following the German trip: "Not many lounge suits, there".

The Nazi smear on the Duke & Duchess was started by UK catholic factions, members of the Moseley family, whose father Oswald was a head of the British Union of Fascists.

The Truman family holds all the previously unpublished papers, documents and official letters relating to the Duke & Duchess, especially relating to their stalwart support of US Democrats and their relationship with all the US presidents from Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Kennedy etc.

Edited by: emad at: 9/23/05 9:25 am
