A small story of only local consequence. But it's interesting the door was still locked, and the only items removed were consecrated.

CHURCH ROBBED, VANDALISED

July 1

SEBOKENG. - The break-in at Nyolohelo Catholic Church in Zone 12, Sebokeng last week Sunday has left church members fuming.

This is the fourth break-in in just less than six month. What surprised the church authorities is that there is no indication of how the thieves managed to enter as the door was still locked when the break-in was discovered. v The thieves took the candlesticks, boat, chalices, ciboria, church trophies, Holy Sacrament, Holy oil for the sick, vandalized the lamp which shows that there is a Blessed Sacrament and took the relic pieces of the Holy people which were put at the altar in 1967.

Father Mawethu Potolwane suspects that this has something to do with the occult because they took and destroyed the most valuable things of the Catholic faith. Father Potolwane said when they arrived at the church they found the Holy Sacrament scattered on the floor and his clothes were on the floor. 'All the things that were taken can be valued at about R25 000,' said Father Potolwane. He said they are in the process of renovating the church so the break-ins are holding them back. Father Potolwane feels that their church is the target of something unknown and sinister. 'The first time they took the refrigerators in the kitchen, the sound system and from my office they took rosaries, books and bibles which we sell,' explained Father Potolwane. He said it seems the thieves have made their church a playground. If this has got nothing to do with the occult they will try to sell the artefacts at pawnshops. Father Potolwane urges pawnshop owners not to buy these things because they were stolen from the church.

He also advises other churches to tighten their security because they will never know when they too will become the targets of these sinister thugs.

Vaal Weekly

Edited by: Rigorous Intuition at: 7/1/05 7:46 pm
