These other issues are amply commented upon by many people here, and should be. But let me address the pit bulldog part.

Dogfighting has a long history, just like cockfighting and other blood sports. The latter is still legal in a few places in the US. It wasn't until the 1970's that legislation against dogfighting was passed. At that point, there were only about 50 serious dogmen in the US, and they all knew each other. It was considered a sport in which honorable men competed; agreements were made, puppies bought and sold, breedings aranged, fights scheduled, all on a handshake basis.

After it became illegal, the sport deteriorated. It attracted those to whom the appearance of illegality renders a "bad" aura, a "don't mess with me" mindset. Now there is a proliferation of tweakers, dogs are stolen, deals are blown, agreements don't mean shit (pardon my slipping into the vernacular) and fights are staged with prize money in the range of $30,000 and such. It's also legal in Eastern Europe, Russia, Japan and other areas of Eastern Asia. Another result of this is that the price of puppies runs into the thousands.

No wonder the pit bulldog world has deteriorated! My last ex-husband was/is involved, and he qualifies on all the behavioral descriptions... I left it when I left him. Never did like the people he hung out with, anyway; but I still remember some of those original old-timers with respect.

It's not a surprise at all, to me, that bulldogs were also a part of the sordid scene described in the above article. But it sure is a shame. Another good dog breed ruined... they used to be America's signature dog, and only a small percentage were actually fought. Most were the wonderful companion dogs that they had a reputation for being. Lately, the breed is blamed for the idiocy and sordidness of the owners. Like the dogs that killed a 5-year-old child in Show Low AZ last year; I knew the owners, and they were tweakers, drinkers, fighters, irresponsible people who simply opened their door and let their dogs out in the neighborhood daily. They have been charged with murder.

These are the same type of people that were busted in San Antonio. Good thing they were stopped before anything like that happened, and that two-year-old child is out of there. --MaryK
