Crucifix possibly stabbing template

Detective testifies in priest's murder trial
Wednesday, April 26, 2006
James Ewinger
Plain Dealer Reporter

Toledo- Without ever uttering the word "ritual," a Toledo detective testified that a crucifix may have been used as a template for nine stab wounds that killed a nun in 1980 - leaving the perfectly defined shape of an inverted cross on her chest.

The stab wounds are just some of the more lurid details in the state's case against the Rev. Gerald Robinson, a 68-year-old Roman Catholic priest on trial for the murder.

He is accused of stabbing and choking Sister Margaret Ann Pahl in the chapel of a local hospital, on the eve of Easter Sunday, 1980.

"Ritual" is a term often used to describe the slaying, which left 31 stab wounds on the 71-year-old nun's partially undressed body.

The most chilling evidence so far came Tuesday morning from Detective Terry Cousino of the Toledo Police Department's Scientific Investigation Unit.

Using a mannequin on the courtroom floor to represent Pahl, he described how an altar cloth had been placed over her body before a blade was plunged into her heart nine times - defining the cross.

He used the actual, bloody altar cloth for the demonstration, and described how it had been folded over, how tears in each half matched, and fit the tears in her clothing and flesh as well.

The cloth was removed for the other 22 wounds about her chest, neck and head.

Cousino said he looked for a crucifix to match the initial stab wounds because they were too perfectly aligned to have been done without a template. He also said three different blood stains matched the outline of a letter opener police took from Robinson's hospital quarters in 1980.

Prosecutors believe the small, saber-shaped letter opener was the murder weapon.

The Plain Dealer

Thanks for the tip, mother. I've read his Lucifer's Lodge, which contains some important material on earlier cases and makes some good points.

Robinson Trial, Bill Kennedy, Rama Coomaraswam

Postby mother » Thu Apr 27, 2006 2:43 pm

Also Kennedy has a bunch of free downloads, including interview with Rama Coomaraswamy. Coomaraswamy is a brilliant, compassionate MD and psychiatrist and exorcist. He touches on the Robinson case in audio. Rama Coomaraswamy represents my ideal Catholic layperson. (although I've heard he's become a priest) This is the type of person (Rama) who can provide a missing link in understanding what RI has introduced-deep politics.

The sacristy is a room in the chapel where vestments are kept.

Knife wounds marked an upside down cross on her neck and chest. She was stabbed about 30 times and had been choked so violently the blood vessels in her eyes had burst.

Her underwear had been pulled down to her ankles and a blood-stained altar cloth covered part of her body.

For more than 20 years, the police failed to find her killer.

The murder - and the rumours of a Satanic ritual performed in the sacristy that Easter weekend - became a local legend.

Then a woman came forward in 2003 with claims that she had been sexually abused as a child by a group of priests.

She claimed that she was molested for years and had been the victim of ritual sex abuse by a cult of clergy who dressed in nuns' clothing and held orgies.

According to the Toledo Blade, the woman said that she was forced to perform ritualistic acts in a church basement such as getting into a coffin filled with cockroaches and made to eat what she thought was a human eyeball.

She also claimed that the clerics performed an abortion on her, chopped up dogs and killed an infant and a toddler.

She fingered Robinson as an alleged member of the cult.

The police were unable to substantiate her allegations and no charges relating to the accusations were filed.

But the letter turned the spotlight back on Robinson for Sister Margaret Ann's murder. One year later, he was arrested.

Robinson, the priest who had presided over Sister Margaret Ann's funeral, went on trial last Monday and is the first priest to be prosecuted in the US for killing a nun.

Sister Margaret Ann, 71, was the caretaker of the hospital chapel, while Robinson was its chaplain.

New forensic evidence has revealed that a sword-shaped letter opener found in Robinson's room was the murder weapon.

Prosecutors told the court that the letter opener was so clean when it was seized that a police forensics officer said it appeared to have been sterilised.

However, when a medallion was peeled off, a speck of blood was found.

Using technology not available during during the original investigation, the authorities were able to match the blood stain on the altar cloth to the unique pattern created by the letter opener.

Robinson has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. The first witness is to take the stand tomorrow. - AP.
