5 Newark boys missing in 1978

I was listening to Coast to Coast last night and the guest had a story about 5 boys from Newark, NJ who went missing in 1978.

The way he told it, they had been working for someone who dropped them off later on a corner in the city. They then seem to have split into a group of two and a group of three and went their seperate ways and that was the last that anyone has seen of them. He mentioned that one of the families recieved a phone call stating that the boys were arrested in Washington D.C. for participating in a truck robbery, which turned out to be false, but the call did originate in D.C.

I have not found much information online about it yet. Just an archive at the New York Times that mostly requires payment and a Usenet post from 1998. The Usenet post includes a Reuters article with slightly different information. It says the boys were playing basketball, not working, but still were dropped off by the same guy. And it says the phone call "offered to reveal the boys' whereabouts in exchange for $750."

Their names: Alvin Turner, Randy Johnson, Michael McDowell, Melvin Pittman and Ernest Taylor

NY Times archive

Usenet post

Edited by: jingofever at: 9/13/06 12:41 pm
