And YEARS.

Finally the Israelis wearied of hearing it, and handed him his ass in the Six Day War of 1967.

He was dead by 1970, didn't live to see the Yom Kippur War of 1973.

I agree with eric, the CIA probably got him in.

The nice thing about ALWAYS blaming the CIA is, in a very high percentage of cases, you are right.

Kind of like betting the Indians won't make it into the Series this year.

(That can backfire though, I grew up in Clevo and for years people would use "...when the Indians win the Series" as a synonym for "when the Ice Capades is performing in Hades." As in, "I'll date your sister with the mustache when the Indians win the Series" or "I'll pay that SOB back when the Indians win the Series." So the year...forget now when it was...when they were in the Series sent shivers through many a Cleveburger, contemplating nuptials to the furry lipped one, or coughing up an old debt.)

I was just reading a thread here in one of the more radical Israeli websites, debating whether we should support the call to "dismantle" ISrael or settle with less (namely, support right of return and elimination of ZIonist regime). One writer said he thinks that even the grossest injustice never led to a call to "dismantle" an entire state, ie SOuth Africa, rather to reach some compromise to end the colonialist racist regime/govrenment. Of course this is all a bit pathetic, looking at who is in power here right now.

Actually, the debate was around the question why people like CHomsky and Sartre and others critics of colonialism make an exception with regards to Israel, point being that under classic analysis, Zionism should be condemned as any other colonist racist movement - but it isn't.
Since we all respect Chomsky and Sartre and Albert Memi (sp?), there was an attempt to understand what they are seeing that we here, miss.

SOuth Africa

Postby eric144 » Thu Oct 27, 2005 7:18 am

opposed the British Empire and had nuclear weapons. That's why it had to go. Mandela was accused twice in books of working for MI6. His job was to ensure the country went back to British , not African ownership.

That's a new "take" (for me at least) on SA and mandela. Now that we witness the Brittish involvement in Iraq war, I don't rule anything out. maybe they had some intrigues there as well. One can also see it as correcting a historical mistake on behalf of the Brittish Empire. There several striking similarities between SA and Israel.

Trust me. Leave 'em where they are

Point made. I don't think those who call for the dismanteling of Israel are willing to accept the flow of immigrants (both Jewish AND Palestinians) as a result. If this were the case, Israel would not be established in the first place.

Same goes for the so called support of the Palestinian cause worldwide, least of all the Arab world. LAst thing they want is to see a strong Palestinian political entity...whether at their countries or elsewhere. The Palestinians, too, became an insitgating (unstable) factor, I think they call it.

Your analysis, Eric, points to some despair, which is actually the reality of the colonised world. Whatever we do, its going to be for one empire or the other. there is no independence per se, even at the level of identity. I still think SA is better off now than under the Afrikaner appartheid regime. there is a constant flow of white immigration to USA< Canada etc., they will always have a place under the sun. THe locals will not.
I think that for ISraelis it is hard to accept that the Boer (sp?) were also a persecuted minority in Europe who went to their "promised land" and ended up as oppressors of the same kind they left behind. There is an Israeli journalist in Washington DC (Yoav Karni, otherwise I don't like him) who did a very deep and thorough research into the similarities bn ISrael and SA, I don't know if he published it in English as well. He argues that if the "Labor" party of SA (mostly English oriented, moderate) did not fail constanctly to get re elected (due to arrogance, corruption, shorsightedness), things could have worked out better and appartheid would then be abolished without the need for a white "exodus" from SA. He draws a parallel between the appartheid ruling party and the Likkud, saying these are mainly white trash who exploited racial "supremacism" to climb up the ladder and take over the entire SA, including the more educated white population.
His intention is to show that if Israel allows right wing mob and riffraff to hold on to the government for too long, the international community will finally interfere and move to boycot Israel altogether and bring it down.
I think he left out the most important component : US and European interests. But his cultural comparisson is compelling and his entire work on SA is very interesting.
Israel indeed collaborated with SA, especially with less attractive people there, actually nazis of sorts. The general excuse we hear here, from our government, is that "israel cannot be too picky and choosy with allies at this time blah blah" but the truth of the matter is that it took a toll of nazification of those who had do this collaboration cause you cant do it without being influenced. My hometown retired photographer, a German JEw survivor of Dachau, moved there after his grandchildren (whose father did business there and settled during appartheid rule and the peak of Israeli-SA romance) and was murdered there by black garden worker during a robbery of ten dollars. I think it says everything.
