gaza, israel...brief reminder

Postby havanagilla » Mon Jun 26, 2006 11:11 am

Nobody mentioned, so just a brief reminder that the region is bubbling. "accidents" killing families and children in Gaza, as attmepts to provoke the end of the cease fire by Hammas succeeds. now we have 3 israeli casualties, allowing PM Ulmart to prepare for a bloodier attack. People are generally in a state of dissociation and fatigue. people just go on with their lives, like ostriges, hoping it will all stay far from them.
--
Rumsfeld and GOnzales are heading to the region, will visit Israel soon. reminder to pray for a loose cannon or some derranged suicide bomber to choose the right target this time...

Tomorrow belongs to him [?] lawrence of cyberia

There have been some ugly photos out of the Occupied Territories in the last couple of weeks. Even more so than usual, I mean. Probably the one that has bothered me most is this one, from Hebron, showing a settler boy refusing to let a Palestinian lady pass him on the street, while Israeli soldiers and policemen look on.

(IPC Palestine, 7 May 2006).

You see some terrible images from Israel and the Occupied Territories, but somehow this one has bothered me in a way that even children shot through the head or rescuers scouring bus stations for bits of stray flesh haven’t. It is something to do with the sheer arrogance of a child who is brought up to think there is an entire sub-group of humanity that it is perfectly normal to humiliate on the street, and worst of all that he is being confirmed in his superiority by the fact that the responsible adults around him stand around and watch. The armed representatives of his government and his people tell him by their action – or lack of it – that yes, this is how an Israeli treats a Palestinian.

Most of us who were brought up on stories of Israelis as good guys and Zionism as a noble, pioneering, victimless project, probably understand now that a lot of what we were fed then was a myth. But even after you have understood that, it can still be very unsettling when you see the representatives of official Israel looking on indifferently as a settler mocks and humiliates a Palestinian passerby like this. The uncomfortable thought sneaks into your mind that only a couple of generations ago this kind of casual hatred would have been handed out to Jewish people, while another nation's soldiers looked on, and you wonder what on earth is going to happen to Israel.

If he were allowed contact with foreigners he would discover that they are creatures similar to himself and that most of what he has been told about them is lies. The sealed world in which he lives would be broken, and the fear, hatred, and self-righteousness on which his morale depends might evaporate. 2006-03-31 Wandering Jew - Propaganda for the Insipid
by Alice Ollstein

Overall, I felt the conference made every issue black and white. You’re either for Israel or against it. You’re either pro-Democracy or pro-evil regimes, as Israeli candidate for prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu put it, “The world is split between those who oppose terror and those who appease it.”

The speakers and “informational” videos left no grey area, no place for dialogue or debate, and certainly no place for dissent. I especially squirmed at the parallels AIPAC drew between Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hitler. To the tune of more dramatic classical music, the six enormous screens flashed back and forth between Hitler giving anti-Jew speeches and Ahmadinejad giving anti-Israel speeches. The famous post-Holocaust mantra “Never Again” popped up several times. Everything was geared toward persuading the audience that another Holocaust is evident ... unless we get them first. Now, I don’t dispute that Iran’s leader is a Holocaust denier or even that he could attack Israel, but I mind very much being forced to think he’s pure evil through clever sound bites and colorful images.

The screens faded to black and the speeches began, and I recognized, beneath the rhetoric, a battle cry. As U.N. Ambassador John Bolton promised “painful and tangible consequences for Iran,” and as Vice President Dick Cheney said, “The terrorists have declared war on the civilized world, but we’ll declare victory,” I noted the scariest division of all: You’re either pro-war or pro-Holocaust.

Sepka, good point, and perhaps the German Jews SHOULD have blown up some schools and busses rather than just go along with the flow. But they (their decendants) are making up for it now, perhaps, though, on the wrong target. I say, its not too late to bomb germany...that might work better than trying to resolve the conflict without addressing the European roots to the violence.
--
Generally, as to the conflict, i think that staying within the capitalist matrix (as most contributors here do) will not yield any solutions. the occupation and the entire military complex of Israel is just an arm of the imperialist globalist machine.
Perhaps, it would be wise to remember that the number of victims of the capitalist economy of our region is much much larger in both paelstinian and israeli lives. the conflict is one among many nationalist "spins" that serve the economic death machine originating in the USA but not only. For the time being, the category "palestinian" renders the person a kosher victim of capitalist aspirations, when there is"peace" (aham) the application of death will be more color blind..what a relief.
--
Recently, I am thinking more that Menachem Begin's attempts to square some accounts with the "new germany" (assassin Adenauer) would have been the salvation of the poor civilians in Gaza now, more than any "peace jive". I think the german people are aware and therefore you will always find them very willing to sell weapons to Israel and insidiously inflame the conflict here, so that people don't have time to remember who they really want to shoot.
--
the palestinians are only doing what they can do to defend themselves, and for the time being that spares them the need to address the social and economic and political decisions regarding their place and role in global economy and interests.
