I would glady find you shelter or provide it myself were you to leave that place and come here to the states. I don't know how to properly vocalize a substitute for prayer in athiest terms, but the safety of you and yours is something I hope endures..
____________________
hugh manatee wins: "This is called "mutual exclusivity." woke up, still alive, no rubble around, YET.

thanks for all the support people, its heartwarming. Postby AlicetheCurious » Thu Jul 27, 2006 3:18 pm

My computer suddenly started acting very strange around a week ago, so I had no access to the internet in all that time. I made up for it by switching between Al-Jazeera, Al-Arabia, CNN, BBC, Future TV and al-Manar from the time I woke up until around 2:00 am every night, so I did manage to keep very well informed.

Hava, I'm sorry for being late in joining my voice to the others', to express the hope that you and your child stay safe.

It must be frightening to be near Tel Aviv these days, although it must be said that since you're not a soldier, the chances are quite small that you would be hurt by Hizbullah rockets, if that's any consolation.

I wish I could say the same about the Israeli bombs, to my many friends and relatives who are literally worried sick about their families in Lebanon.

My uncle's wife lost a 23-year-old niece in the previous Israeli invasion, and now she can't get a hold of her nephew, the only remaining child in that family. He lives in an area -- in NORTHERN Lebanon (incidentally a Christian-majority area) which was recently bombed.

Nobody I've spoken to, actually blames the Israeli people for what's being done in their name. I think it's beginning to dawn on many Arabs that the Israelis are no less pawns in this demonic chess game, than we are (although there are fewer crocodile tears and empty words when our own children are murdered).

If I could have one wish, it is that whatever one wishes for others would automatically be done to oneself, around the world.

That would result in the survival of the TRULY fittest, in my opinion.

alice thanks and hope your dear ones in lebanon stay out of harm's way. I can only say I am truly sorry for the loss of lives in Lebanon, and what seems to be a near total devastation of country. While in 1982 I was under the impression that protesting can change something and was also young enough to want to go up there and help the refugees, I am now in true solidarity with the victims there, namely, in the same situation of both helplessness to affect change AND inability to offer help, as I myself am in survival mode for the last couple of years and more so - now. And in fact, it was the same in 1982, except I was not aware of it, then.
---
It becomes quite clear that it is a certain way of thinking and being that spreads like virus all over the world, and takes its toll everywhere. I think calling it nazi-practice is already worn out, but its somethng from that family of ideologies. we can only hope it is reaching a certain peak that will lead to self defeat. And then for a while we can breath, until something starts destroying again. Or, to take condi's rich imagery, let's hope its the birth pangs of her own decline.

---
AS for the chances of getting hit by a rocket...well, I am not a soldier, but was defined as a spy by canada's former gov, which does make it kind of iffy, but I think that in terms of the hizbolla I am recognized as a civilian and not an enemy. lucky me.
This reminds me how my life was saved by a palestinian guy from eastern jerusalem who gave me some prior notice of a huge bombing in down town back in 1997, next to my office. Never was I harmed by arabs in my life. on the contrary. But, clearly attempts on my part to be sympathetic with the palestinian/arab minorities right in Israel, did place me in hot waters.

Re: Tel Aviv next

Postby havanagilla » Thu Jul 27, 2006 7:43 pm

just a bit of explaining on my views. while i join the board's general views on this war and the part played by israel, i don't have the sympathy for Iran's regime, simply because I don't go for religious fundies from any group, its far from my cup of tea. I am less familiar with hizbolla's platform, but I am sure I don't like any "party of god" whether its in DC this time of year, or here, etc. I see the entire theocratic narrative as a scam coming from PTB production, and i see those who fall into that trap (which is understandable) as indeed falling into a trap. So, i would not lend my voice FOR Iran's "right to have nuclear plants" just because it opposes the US/Israel position. I am against nuclear plants everywhere and against correcting one evil with another, in general.

BTW, if anyone sent me email today, i mistakenly deleted one email, god knows from who (the one telling me I won the lottery probably), so I am sending a general request for a resend, here too, and only emails from today.

I too am late getting here--I'm not used to a board with so many new threads starting up so frequently--but I too have been hoping for your safety, havanagilla, and watching the news for mentions of Tel Aviv.

To me, ALL fundamentalists are equally deluded and equally pathetically subject to programming by TPTB--the only difference is in the flavor of the rhetoric used. And at this point, my mind is boggled by the inability of fundies to discern this....Watching the way the world is racing to hell in a handbasket, I wonder that so many people manage to not just hang onto their blinders, but to enlarge them until not one iota of information can enter, lest it is approved by their religious leaders. How do they DO that?!

As for me, I've lost most of my cherished beliefs over the past 2 years. They fell victim to reality in all its ugliness. Belief systems are social control devices to me now. Perhaps, at their cores, there is still Truth, but to me, now, they look like ways to keep people passive in the face of atrocities committed by their governments.

So I won't say to you that I'm praying for you, but I will tell you that if a human mind has any power to send hopes/wishes for your safety, then that is what I'm doing for you. You and your son, and all those other Lebanese and Israeli parents and children do not deserve to die so that corrupt politicians can profit. I wish you good fortune.

LilyPat
