And I don't think he was a life-long (what should we say? asset?) of military/intelligence. I believe the example and friendship of Vallee encouraged Hynek towards his own independence of thought and intellectual risk-taking.

I think "asset" fits the bill nicely. If anything, I'm sure many appeals were made to his principles to persuade him to play along whenever he was appropriate or convenient to further their agenda.

Quote:
I believe the example and friendship of Vallee encouraged Hynek towards his own independence of thought and intellectual risk-taking.

Well said. Vallee's hints that a long-standing interest by the intelligence community (and others) in the manipulation of UFO phenomena shed interesting new light on how someone like Hynek could have been manipulated. It seems like Hynek would have written most shenanigans off as bad protocol, poor policy or good-old "red tape" without any good reason to suspect otherwise. Good researchers aren't getting any less gullible these days, despite so many historical reasons to change their ways. At least he didn't end up like M.K. Jessup...
"A crooked stick will cast a crooked shadow."
Edited by: thoughtographer at: 5/7/06 8:16 pm

I wasn't writing Hynek off...he debunked his own debunking later, if I remember. Just showing that things are not always as they seem and lots of games getting played.

It's just that a lot of people would read "debunker" and run away from the man's entire life's work based simply on a personal bias, and it would be a shame for anyone to dismiss Hynek on principle. A lot of these games are decades-old marathons and relay races, and most of the time nobody can even figure out who's doing the running.
"A crooked stick will cast a crooked shadow."

Confession:

When I was a kid, Hynek was a hero to me (I was a weird kid, what can I say)...so yeah, when I read about his COINTELPRO type activity I was pretty disappointed.

I think he was open about it, though...later.

From what I can tell this guy doesn't really seem to be much of a "hacker" per say... It all seems to easy, and why wouldn't it be. Why wouldn't the government purposely leave misinformation behind loosely secured servers, "honeypots" if you will, to distract the eager.
