One saucer to rule them all, one saucer to bind them

Space: the final frontier for modern religious expression?

From the stars/planets of Kolob in the Mormon Cosmology, to the motherplanes of the NOI, to the out-and-out UFO cults of the latter half of the 20th century, it seems that the latest wave of religious expression has a serious bent towards things extraterrestrial. URANTIA has a UFO angle, Scientology, and lets not forget the Pledians and the "Nine." This is eminently fascinating to me for some reason. When I found out about the Mormon planet thing, I was amused, but the ezekiel motherplanes of w.f. muhammad floored me. At least Thelema doesnt seem concerned with UFOs and outer space—but then there is that haunting LAM portrait.

I wonder: has there been a new religion or cult spring up in the last 200 years that did not concern itself with other planets, UFOs, and cheesy space opera?

The only one i can think of is wicca and ceremonial magick, who deal with the "ultra"terrestrial, which some say may be the same thing...

The sci-fi series that explored legends of the Planet Kobol, in which the Ninth Lord of Kobol lead the migration of the 12 tribes to planet Caprica and 13th tribe to Earth.

So there's an interesting concept that we've heard about here at RI.....the Nine that lead, or influence, humanity.
Could be just a coincidence, but who knows?

In addition to being Mormon propaganda, the show had lots of strange Islamic overtones.

In one episode the cast encounters strange lights in the sky and a Count Iblis. Iblis is the Arabic word for the Devil.

Some of the crew are taken on baord a "starship" whose inhabitants appear to be angels, except that they are adorned in full berkhas.

As to the Church of Bob....I always assumed it was a joke, but they were partly resposible for the tragedy with the Heaven's Gate cult.
The Subgeniuses had predicted that a comet would be found that would be called "Hail Bob" and that behind it there would be a UFO flying to take the believers away on X day.
After the comet was named "Hale-Bopp", the Heaven's Gate crew took the ball and ran with it.

My "problem" is that you claim to understand that this "Bob" stuff is all a "joke"; yet somehow, you take THIS claim about Hale-Bopp at face value and try to heap some "real world" BLAME on The Church of the SubGenius for the deaths of others -- totally missing the point and turning a good joke sinister. I fucking KNOW that people who align themselves with "the SubGenius group" have been talking about this since it happened -- because I AM ONE OF THEM! In the name of Bob, I'm not blaming the Subgenii

What I'm saying is that it was a tragic misunderstanding.

The Church predicted that there would be a comet in 1998, or whenever, that would be named "Hail Bob".
It would be "X Day" and all the good lil slackers would get to ride the UFO.

Next, the comet appears and is named "Hale Bopp", which is very close.

Then, in November 1996, amateur astronomer Chuck Shramek of Houston, Texas took a CCD image of the comet, which showed a fuzzy, slightly elongated object nearby. When his computer sky-viewing program did not identify the star, Shramek called the Art Bell radio program to announce that he had discovered a "Saturn-like object" following Hale-Bopp.
UFO enthusiasts, such as remote viewing proponent Courtney Brown, soon concluded that there was an alien spacecraft following the comet.
In fact, the object was simply an 8.5-magnitude star, SAO141894, which did not appear on Shramek's computer program because the user preferences were set incorrectly. Shramek refused to admit to his mistake when this was pointed out to him.

So, then the nutbars in the Heaven's Gate cult took this as a sign that it REALLY was "X Day", or whatever, and offed themselves.

That's why Stang, or whoever, was addressing them in such a manner.
The whole cult was a rip-off of Subgenius "ideals", or whatever you wanna call them.

These idiots even believed that Star Trek was real.
