Here's an idea:

Stop reading obvious spam!

Just delete it. If the title makes no sense, and it's from an address that seems unfamiliar and/or gibberish, then don't open it. Unless you as a matter of course get a lot of genuine messages from total internet strangers, you shouldn't miss anything really important... and if you do it's the other person's fault for giving their email a title that looks like spam.

This one's got a lot of mis-spellings and combined words:

Quote:
From: Lewie Boyce <egw@destinationmanawatu.co.nz>
To: "me"@gmail.com
Date: Aug 9, 2006 1:29 AM
Subject: sailing

Quote:
Royal ruefully, fingering her wrecked begonia. But Dean had not got back from hiswinter in Los Angeles. Finally Miss Royal sat erect and wiped her eyes. I cant do it if she doesnt approve, decided Emily. But, at least, therewas fortunately now no question of showing them to Miss Royal. Then, perhaps, when theyre upIll manage to get to Paris. I shall remember thecolour and shape of that yarn to my dying day. Emily paused in the act of shutting the outer door and looked atMiss Royal. Emily wondersif he could have eaten the chicken in that short time. Miss Royal went off in another convulsion. I climbed the hill of firs andlooked down over the fields of mist and silver in the moonlight. Finally Miss Royal sat erect and wiped her eyes. But Im going to settle down to hard, serious work. What do the bys around here be thinking av? Evidently this was not the Murray traditionof receiving a proposal. What has gotinto me that I cant make up my own mind? I suppose its all right for them if they dont get married, saidAunt Elizabeth. But, at least, therewas fortunately now no question of showing them to Miss Royal. And she had no realhope that Aunt Elizabeth would let her go. I could havereassured Aunt Ruth on that point, also, had I chosen. I think she might not tolerate a divided allegiance. I locked him there to relieve dear Aunt Angelas mindabout her cat. But now I think you let me off very easily, considering the behaviour of my supposed dog. Aunt Elizabeth knitted a round of her stocking before she saidanything. I dont knowwhat I would have done if I couldnt have shut my own eyes. The said Emily Byrd Starr told him she wouldnt. She had reallybeen hoping they would tell her not to go. I had a most terrible time with himbefore you came. It will help methrough any number of white nights. He hasnt quite finished the tidy, to be sure, but you mighttake it along. Miss Royal: IS the Canadian Government making reciprocityproposals? Ill make the name of Frederick Kent mean something in Canada! Why didnt you throw something at me, youpoor insulted darling? Emily, I want you to come back to New York with me in July. Lets gab, said Miss Royal, snuggling downbeside Emily. Emily sat in a maze of bewilderment, too confused and dazzled tothink clearly. After all, she thought, Miss Royals viewpoint was thejust the same as Mrs.

This time, I can also read the contents of one of the pictures. This one is called "independance day.gif" and does not contain any virus. It is a text image saying (from what I can gather):

Quote:
Breaking news alert issued
Radar for EGLY now...

And then it mentioned the name behind EGLY is a publicly traded company called "Ever-Glory International Group." So now I understand that the pictures were from a stockbroker's press release. I don't know, but this Ever-glory company has piqued my interest.

Quote:
This time, I can also read the contents of one of the pictures

Depends on what sort of email you use as to whether this is applicable, but you should immediately TURN OFF the "display HTML images" or similar option which will be somewhere in your settings!! This is most relevent if you use webmail like hotmail or yahoo.

Basically, if your email app/webmail can display messages as HTML (ie formatted with images etc like a website) then spam may have images which are not actually attatched in the email, but are rather hosted on the spammer's site. When you open an email with such an image, the spammer's software can tell that the image has been downloaded via your specific spam message, and thus can add your email address to the list of 'live' addresses which are actually checked by a real person. Hence, your address gets sold on to other spammers and you get more spam!!!

Also if you switch off html messages then you're less likely to see offensive/disturbing images in your spam which has gotta be good.

Attatched images are 'safe' in that they can't connect back to the spammers in any way... but check for virii of course.
