If it's a hoax, it's likely based on the Brian Froud designs for the "Mystics" ("urRu") in the film The World of the Dark Crystal.

www.worldoffroud.com/www/...dc/dc3.cfm
lavender.fortunecity.com/...dex-b.html

The difference that strikes me is that the original animal looks a lot longer-necked than the whale pic.

looking at those suspended whale skeletons,I'd say its a hoax. They've covered the areas where the eye cavity and limb joints would give the game away.
Perhaps the fishing just isn't paying the bills.Maybe they were hoping for an influx of cryptozoologists and tourists to suppliment their wages.

With stingrays in the news because of Steve Irwin's death, this might be a good place to remind people about the way that dried stingrays have often been presented as dead mermaids or other cryptozoological curiosities. I could only find this one image online and it's not too clear, but I remember buying one as a kid at some seaside tourist track. It was the strangest thing I'd ever seen.

www.flickr.com/photos/ven...eworleans/
