Bombs found in hotel after man's death in Arlington Texas

Postby GDN01 » Thu Feb 16, 2006 1:40 am

This happened a couple of weeks ago, and I've been trying to find more information on the man who had rented the room where the bombs were found. Has anyone else read anything about this?

Posted on Fri, Jan. 27, 2006
2 bombs found at Arlington hotel
By MITCH MITCHELL
STAR-TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER

ARLINGTON -- A bomb-squad robot disabled two explosive devices found in a south Arlington hotel room Friday.

The devices were 15 inches long and connected by 10 to 12 feet of wire, said S. Vasquez, an investigator with the Fort Worth Fire Department's bomb squad.

"These bombs had the potential to do a lot of damage," Vasquez said. The bombs were filled with black powder, gunshot pellets and enough bullets to create a spray of shrapnel if exploded, investigators said.

The man came to Arlington about a month ago and took a job at a local business, Niederhaus said. The car he was driving had Louisiana license plates, but the man had driver’s licenses from Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, Niederhaus said.

There is no evidence that the man was a terrorist, Niederhaus said. The ingredients for the two bombs that were detonated are not difficult to find, but can be tricky to manipulate.

“The purpose of this was to create as much havoc as possible, so that innocent bystanders are hurt,” he said. “We were lucky.”
Article found here.

I just found this article, which doesn't quite match the description of the man's life from the previous article.

Officials stumped over bombs in hotel room
By MARK AGEE
STAR-TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER

ARLINGTON - Richard Wayne Fowler was a restaurant manager and by all accounts a good citizen, investigators said.

"He was one of those guys that came in to work early and stayed late," Deputy Fire Marshal Darin Niederhaus said. "His employees liked him. Everyone was really worried about him when he got ill."

Which is why investigators are stumped by the two pipe bombs found last week in Fowler's hotel room after he died.

Fowler spent several weeks in a hospital before dying of natural causes. Workers at InTown Suites, in the 1700 block of Oak Village Boulevard, were cleaning out his hotel room Friday when they found the two pipe bombs. The devices were disabled by a bomb-squad robot.

Niederhaus said he has not found any connection between Fowler and any political organizations or terrorist groups, and he had no criminal history.

"But people don't make pipe bombs for fun," Niederhaus said. "Just the making of pipe bombs is dangerous."

Each of the bombs was well-made: more than a foot long and filled with explosives and pellets, officials said.

There wasn't anything among Fowler's possessions -- no maps, plans or recordings -- that indicated his intent, Niederhaus said.

"I don't know if we'll ever get that answer," Niederhaus said. "It may be that the only man who knew that took it to the grave with him."

Article found here.

Says he died of natural causes, but not what, nor any indication of his age.. but he was obviously not too old to work on his feet.

Is it common in the US for ppl to have drivers lic. from multiple states?

To have three licenses (one assumes them to be current, although the article doesn't say) would be highly unusual, and probably means he did it on purpose.

-Sepka the Space Weasel

Edited by: Sepka at: 2/16/06 6:42 am

Yikes, he almost sounds like a spook.

UPDATED: 31 January 2006: The man who died in an Arlington hospital - ostensibly from natural caues - was identified by authorities as Richard Wayne FOWLER (a/k/a Richard DAVELYNN). Intial investigation conducted by the Northeast Intelligence Network indicates that FOWLER might originally be from Oklahoma (based on the issuance of his social security number), although most recently might have lived in the 19000 block of Preston Road, Dallas, Texas before moving to Arlington. Investigation found a number of different addresses, dates of birth and social security numbers associated with his name. Various reports list his age as 53.
www.homelandsecurityus.com/site/modules/news/article.php?storyid=

Edited by: chiggerbit at: 2/16/06 10:16 am

Say, how close was this to where Cheney's hunting accident happened?

Ok, I see it is not even close. Still, I'm wondering what kind of "ammunition" was found in the guy's room.

Edited by: chiggerbit at: 2/16/06 11:02 am

Reminds me of the story of Davos City hotel bomber/spook Michael Meiring.
