I just received the latest issue of Popular Mechanics (yeah, I know they're a bunch of shills, but I got a free subscription a couple years ago. it's about to expire).

On the cover, is "Anti-terror Super Cops: New Tech, New Tactics to protect our ports, borders and cities"

As you might imagine, the article portrays a virtual orgasm over the heavy firepower and authoritarian tactics by these new super cops, the "public defenders." Ha.

A brief excerpt, wherein the author is describing the massive show of force around New York:

Quote:

On this day, Nieves doesn't see anything overly suspicious, but he is pleased that the deployment created a strong impression. Known as a Hercules team, it makes multiple appearances around the city each day. The locations are chosen either in response to specific intelligence or simply to provide a show of force at high-profile sites.

"The response we usually get is 'Holy shit!'" Nieves says.
"That's the reaction we want.We are in the business of scaring people - we just want to scare the right people."

I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this.
Hmmm.....

The U.S. Department of Defense definition of terrorism:

The calculated use of violence or the threat of violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological.

These days, one of the most profitable American industries is in developing, packaging, and selling FEAR.

And once again, Popular Mechanics attempts to convince readers that it's a good thing their own government is marching armor clad troops down city streets in an attempt to scare the populace into submission.

Toward the end of the article is another revealing paragraph.

Quote:
The commanders step out of the mobile command center and convene brief meetings with their troops. Then, 76 cars head down Seventh Avenue to their assigned locations. Lights flashing, they constitute an impressive police presence in the middle of an otherwise peaceful afternoon.
