To be clear, because it took me a couple of reads for it to sink in: the French Defense Ministry is probing the leak of the bin Laden death report, not probing the report of bin Laden's death. France to probe bin Laden death report leak PARIS (Reuters) - France's Defense Ministry said on Saturday a secret service report saying al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden had died could not be confirmed but said it would launch an inquiry into the leak of secret documents. "The information published this morning in the L'Est Republicain newspaper relating to the supposed death of Osama bin Laden cannot be confirmed," the Defense Minsitry said in a statement. French paper says bin Laden died in Pakistan Saudi Arabia is convinced al-Qaida leader died of typhoid, paper says PARIS - A French regional newspaper quoted a French secret service report on Saturday as saying that Saudi Arabia is convinced that al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden died of typhoid in Pakistan last month. L’Est Republicain printed what it said was a copy of the report dated Sept. 21 and said it was shown to President Jacques Chirac, Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin and France’s interior and defense ministers on the same day. “According to a usually reliable source, the Saudi services are now convinced that Osama bin Laden is dead,” the document said. “The information gathered by the Saudis indicates that the head of al-Qaida was a victim while he was in Pakistan on Aug. 23, 2006, of a very serious case of typhoid which led to a partial paralysis of his internal organs.” The report, which was stamped with a “confidential defense” label and the initials of the French secret service, said Saudi Arabia first heard the information on Sept. 4 and that it was waiting for more details before making an official announcement. Officials contacted by Reuters in Chirac’s and Villepin’s offices had no immediate comment. A senior official in Pakistan’s interior ministry said: “We have no information about Osama’s death.” Saudi-born Bin Laden was based in Afghanistan until the Taliban government there was overthrown by U.S.-backed forces in late 2001. Since then, U.S. and Pakistani officials have regularly said they believe he is hiding somewhere on the rugged border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. How convenient, and just before an American election, too. Is this Rove's October Surprise that got leaked too soon for October? Or, is this an arrangement between the US, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan to "resolve" the ~suddenly~ breaking news in the US that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia were stongly tied to 9/11? France had their own Gladio, so I don't trust them any more than I do any Bush mouthpiece.

The Saudi intelligence source told CNN's Nic Robertson that there have been credible reports for the past several weeks that bin Laden is ill, but there has been no word of his death. The questions came in response to the publication of a report in the French regional newspaper L'Est Republicain on Saturday. The article cited a French foreign intelligence document dated September 21 in which a source said the Saudis had received confirmation that bin Laden died of typhoid in Pakistan on August 23. Speaking in Compiegne, France, following meetings on trade with Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Jacques Chirac said he would investigate the leak of the confidential documents, and said that the information in them has been in no way confirmed. "I was rather surprised to see that a confidential note from the DGSE (General Directorate for External Security) was published and I have asked the minister of defense to start an investigation immediately and to reach whatever conclusions are necessary," Chirac said. "Secondly, speaking of the source of the information itself, this information is in no way confirmed." U.S. intelligence officials said Saturday they could not confirm the report suggesting that bin Laden might be dead, and White House spokesman Blair Jones added: "We have no confirmation of that report." Laid Sammari, the journalist who wrote the article, told CNN in a telephone interview he was confident of the authenticity of the confidential document cited in his report. He said the only thing the Saudis were trying to confirm was the burial place of the al Qaeda leader, before making an official announcement. Pakistani officials also said Saturday they had no information that confirmed bin Laden's death. Friday, U.S. President George Bush and Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said in a joint news conference that the hunt is still on for the leaders of al Qaeda. CNN terrorism analyst Peter Bergen said he is skeptical of the suggestion that bin Laden might be dead, saying it was not something the Islamist Web sites would keep quiet about. He also noted that rumors of the al Qaeda leader's demise circulate every few months. The report in L'Est Republicain said the Saudi secret service first got the reports of bin Laden's death on September 4. Did anyone else notice in the press conference with Bush and Mushariff (sp?) that as Mushariff was speaking about being "on the hunt" with Bush -- Bush hushed him up and said somthing like "We don't want to give away our plan"... It was as if he prevented Mushariff from spilling the beans about something really big....

When the President looks me in the eye and says, the tribal deal is intended to reject the Talibanization of the people, and that there won't be a Taliban and won't be al Qaeda, I believe him, you know? And when he says, if we find -- when we find Osama bin Laden, he will be brought to justice, I believe him. And we'll let the tactics speak for themselves after it happens. Anyone suppose this is someone's way of heading Rove off at the pass? It's nearly October, the GOP is in a shocking mess... the October Surprise is inevitable... and the biggest one of all is a load of "We got him!", right? So what better way to pull the rug from under Rove than to put it out there that he's dead a couple of weeks before? Bi question though: who would do it and why?
