scam I encountered

Postby Dreams End » Sun Aug 07, 2005 3:08 pm

I met a woman once. Irish. Beautiful! She was staying with some folks I didn't know very well but were in a circle of friends.

She started telling us that she was part of a "secret" organization, membership by inheritance, that had been involved behind the scenes of history for centuries. She wouldn't name the organization.

Although young, she had several children. The first, she said was conceived as part of a plan when she was 13 to create more heirs or something. She had no choice in the matter.

This all sounds somewhat familiar, no?

One day, I caught her online for a chat. She wouldn't say much about her secret group. Lots of hints, etc, but no substance. However, the people she was staying with, were convinced and were allowing her to "teach them" things.

I pushed her and pushed her and she finally said something to the effect that her group worked with the Druids and with a group called the "renunciates." I'd never heard of the renunciates before, but she wouldn't elaborate.

People, scams have to be done more cleverly in this age of the internet. I looked up renunciates...they are an order of female assassins in a series of books by Marion Zimmer Bradley. Fiction, of course.

This woman left the one couple (I think she kept them hooked by being involved with them sexually.) She moved onto another couple I knew and took them for several thousand dollars.

So, be careful out there! (this was in response to the post about Bioathonoi's "disappearance" around here. Seventhsonjr mentioned a scam, but I didn't want to post this there, because I do not know that bio is trying to scam anyone and didn't want this post to be construed that way.)

I think you found the Sci Fi guild "Renunciates of Darkover" - the Amazon women? They are a virtual community based on a role playing game called DarkOver. Of course, there may be a few taking themselves too seriously... they really do have guild secrets just like most RPG guilds.

I don't know what search engine you're using, but the term 'renunciate' is used in several older faith systems to refer to someone who renounces all worldly possessions and lives off the charity of others.

"renunciate" is another name for the fourth stage -formally called Sannyasin- of an Indian Hindu belief system known as Sanatana Dharma.
There are active Buddhist renunciate communities to this day.

I do not mean to minimize the potential threat of a cult. It's just that the term she gave you has a specific meaning but does not allow determining what group she belongs to.

no, it was clear she weren't no Buddhist! And her mentioning of an all-female group...etc. And I don't think it was a cult...I think it was just a scam. I bought it, for a little while, but it was the Darkover characters that fit her description.

Just a little caution flag to toss out there.
