Never go home again! Emigrate to beautiful Newlandia...

Postby anotherdrew » Thu Sep 29, 2005 11:35 pm

Looks like some prime land unclaimed by any nation state are comming into play... These big islands north of canada seem to be ice free ATM and the way thigs are going... well they might just stay that way year round before much longer. Who wants to found a new city on the coast in the new northwest passage?

Am I full of beans or could it be done?

was born in Alaska. It was always near impossible to swim there. Until recently. It seems to be getting warmer everywhere for some reason.

Looks like some eligible real estate to me.

a small commune largely underground w. greenhouses, etc.

Postby glubglubglub » Fri Sep 30, 2005 12:31 am

could easily be setup and probably become mostly self-sustainable (capital equipment--construction machinery, raw materials, etc. being the exceptions) ...if I'm not mistaken the land's probably claimable by Canada should people actually show interest in it, which complicates matter.

if you're seriously interested in moving beyond the 'let's try and patch this sinking ship' to the 'let's try and find a place to do it right' we should get in touch...as that's my major task, it seems.

How about some islands closer to the equator?

Having grown up in Minnesota (Brrrrr) and now living in the desert, I freeze when temps get down to 35 degrees.

It does sound like a great idea though!

The island boasts 12 beaches, abundant tropical vegetation, and lots of harvestable tropical hardwoods. It is an excellent location for fishing as well as eco-tourism development. This 250-acre island is totally covered in virgin and secondary rainforest, with older trees reaching as high as 25 metres. Elevations up to 100 metres.

Only $2 million...

private islands

Postby glubglubglub » Fri Sep 30, 2005 2:17 am

250 acres isnt enough for agricultural self-sustainability for any sizable community w/out totally ruining the native environment...even putting most buildings underground wouldn't help matters. Floating artificial aquaculture 'islets' a bit offshore could help alleviate things, but even with that energy sources are going to be a tad lame -- windpower maybe (mixed in w. your fields?), tidal power, maybe the temperature-differential stuff also floating offshore.

Private isalnds are cool...artificial islands are probably the way to go, though, funds permitting. Prices vary widely:

www.privateislandsonline....island.htm
same price, 5x the size
www.privateislandsonline....island.htm
50% more, 12x the size
www.privateislandsonline....island.htm
less expensive, 20xish the size, in a river though

I know a place...

Postby Al Gomas » Fri Sep 30, 2005 4:25 am

I know a place on a desert peninsula that is self sustaining. It as about 10 miles removed from the Pacific. It's a verdant valley with a permanent spring fed water source, enough to supply the small farms and orchards that have been producing for hundreds of years. There is an extinct volcano in the valley which may be responsible for the rich soil there.
I have been dreaming of this place for the past five years. It would make for a great refuge from the coming storm.
If there are any semi-rich folk here who would be interested in bankrolling a foothold in this valley, let me know and I will provide more detail. I think a community of 50 outsiders would be tolerable to the locals, especially if we were to help them realize a better life. Things like water treatment and power plant upgrades would make us welcome. Access is by dirt road and there is no gas station or other services. There is a small "town" with a school and a police station but the valley is mostly a patchwork of small farms populated by poor peasants.

I have to seriously think about that.
I don't know if I could handle much more of the 'simple' life tho. I'm addicted to my internet connection.

Newlandia

Postby heyjt » Fri Sep 30, 2005 1:39 pm

Well, I guess I'm pretty close. I already live on an island in the Pacific Northwest. We've got good water, deep soil, a tractor, deer to hunt and a coastline to fish. We have milled lumber from our own trees, an unlimited supply of firewood, and about twenty years of farming experiance.
I could never live in a city again...
