Poland bends as Putin pushes

Postby ZeroHaven » Wed Aug 03, 2005 4:30 pm

I have been following this on the local news so sorry I don't have print sources.

A few days ago (sunday?) a group of Russian students were attacked by a group of Polish students near a school in Warsaw. Although there is some political animosity, this event cannot be determined to be political, as the attackers are members of a group that in the US would be called "skinheads" who have attacked ALL foreigners with equal vigor.
This event acted as a political catalyst for Putin. For the last few days he has been making public statements, directed at the former USSR countries, essentially saying that they should at least be friends and work together. Some of these countries aren't doing so well and could really use the economic boosts of peaceful relations. This is scaring the bejeebers out of the Polish administration, and they're reacting by criticizing the US.

The background to this is the fact that Polish leaders have been trying to kiss butt and find as many allies as possible. They joined the EU, they supported the US in Iraq - despite the wishes of the citizens in their country. I've seen broadcasts of several protests to this effect, and it seems everybody agrees the government is completely corrupt. Also of note is that the former USSR built Iraq's electrical grid, and Russia now has contracts both to rebuild and to work with oil fields in Iraq. Not to mention that Putin was clearly straining not to kick Bush's ass during their last meeting.

Anyway, based on several news blips I saw today, the Polish administrators are catching onto what it would mean if Putin manages to bring peace and cooperation between the former estate in the region. (essentially creating another power-group with lots of jobs) They're already dissatisfied with the EU's strict regulations, and the money coming in isn't half of what's needed to bring the insides up to spec. So now they're slowly starting to turn eastward and "kiss the other cheek". Although no official public apology has been given, a few televized heads are not only apologizing for the attack incident, but also beginning to speak the first words of scorn against the US since 1990.
It's funny that in Bielorus the people think of Poland as their 'little America'. The government is more confused, but just as two-faced!

I just thought this was interesting and wanted to share.

Edited by: ZeroHaven at: 8/3/05 2:32 pm
