First of all heres an article about Judy Bari, just to give you an idea about the activism in Mendocino County.

rwor.org/a/firstvol/900-905/901/bari.htm

The economy is poor and has been since the 80's, but it has gotten a little better since then. Charles Horwitz and Pacific Lumber have done little to help the area with their economic problems(Pacific Lumber automatized their operation thus laying off alot of mill workers).Hopland, Willits, Ukiah and Fort Bragg are towns that have seen a boom of sorts, and the economy is pretty solid in those areas. Although if you travel to more rural areas it can appear quite depressed (most people in the rural areas see no other choice but to grow marijuana, which they do).The rural areas do have a strong artisan community which does well, and overall there is a strong sense of community in Mendocino.

I guess it depends on what you do, if your an artist you can sustain yourself, but if your a logger you might want to consider Maine.

Are you a logger? lol

on edit- I didn't see mxmendos post, which i agree with. The sherrif is busting indoor operations also i would add.

Edited by: tigre63 at: 4/12/06 11:59 am

Re: Judi Bari

The Judi Bari story is quite intriguing and worthy of a completely separate thread. Definitely some FBI black ops but the whole "Judi as selfless hero and victim of the government conspiracy thing" has some pretty big holes in it as well. The key question is who bombed Judi Bari? Loggers, FBI/CIA, religious nuts?
Most of her defenders assume something along these lines (primarily FBI) but haven’t vigorously pursued the case and rarely even address the questions. There is also strong evidence that her ex-husband planted the bomb, and that she quickly realized this and for various reasons played along to benefit her own standing as psyop victim and to protect her kids.

those interested can look here:

www.flatlandbooks.com/bariart.html

www.theava.com/04/0114-jbtellsall.html
(the ava was a great muckracking little mendo paper under Bruce Anderson, sadly he's no longer in charge.)

www.theava.com/03/08-06-o...didit.html

www.counterpunch.org/bari.html

As a lifelong resident of the Twin Cities, and someone who has a very good friend in Maine, I can tell you that as we've compared notes over the years, the climates can be pretty similar, though Minnesota probably tends to have longer stretches of cold weather, but Chiggerbit is right...it's been a long time since we've had a winter that could in any way be called severe. In fact, yesterday it was close to 80 and the forcast for the next week or so is mid-70's. That used to be late May weather.

Politically, we have our share of loonies both right, left and center, but for the most part the atmosphere is what I would call "progressive". Most of us are still pretty proud of PW. Even our right-leaning talk radio station keeps leaning back to the left. And FWIW, Marketing/Communications is a pretty wide open field here (it's what I've done as a consultant for years) and I wouldn't even mind a little competition from someone aware enough to frequent RI.

i LOVE minnesota public radio!

Postby nashvillebrook » Wed Apr 12, 2006 4:19 pm

and, the career scene there would be real good me. i can either go two ways -- a bigger market and a marketing job i love. or a much smaller scene, working in a restaurant. at 40, i feel like i should do a few more years in my field before i totally give up. but i could just as easily work in a bookstore and be happy. wouldn't have been able to say that 10 years ago. i was such the barnstormer.

and... where do i sign-up for the $200/hr psychic consulting?!! i read cards. i'm damn good too!

Edited by: nashvillebrook at: 4/12/06 2:21 pm

i'm your basic creative director for small teams. started out with my own small shop and published a weekly alt news paper. have been splittiing my time since 93 between small agencies and publishing. sometimes i land gigs doing art direction. sometimes it's flavor-of-the-hour consulting -- everything from video to packaging. i was a philosphy/sociology grad with enough hours for an art major. got all entrepreneurial after school. it was fun.

nashville has not been a fun place to do marcomm. everything is either Christian music or HCA. there's hardly any work in country music anymore -- they are either legacy gigs or being sent to 'big city' agencies.

i would imagine magazine publishing is huge up there. that's my strongest, easiest to explain, skill.

FARK! 45 below!

Postby nashvillebrook » Wed Apr 12, 2006 4:31 pm

once, in east tennessee, it got down to -10 for a day and a half. we thought we were all going to die (stuck, inside, with the relatives).

it's all relative, tho. you have to imagine it's easier to endure that weather in a place that is prepared for it. well, as prepared as anyone can be for freezing their asses off.

That was an extreme year all over the upper midwest, many record-breakers. Besides, it doesn't feel much different once it gets below neg 10. I find the +28 to +32 temps more bone-chilling, for some reason. People up there get kind of energized by the extremes.

Edited by: chiggerbit at: 4/12/06 4:37 pm

Re: libertarian... political atmosphere

Postby zjurhgvc » Wed Apr 12, 2006 7:52 pm

Well, I'm a Yankee exiled in the deep, deep South, and I must say after Katrina that one thing people do here well is deal with adversity, taking in refugees, churches coming together and actually doing something constructive. Might not be as bad as folks think if/when catastrophe strikes--I know for sure, having been raised in the Northeast, that I sure as hell don't want to be there. But if I could live anywhere in the US (in reality, I'd move to the South Island of New Zealand), I would base it on a study of the patterns of nuclear fallout--given prevailing wind patterns, I suppose somewhere rural on the northwest coast would make the most sense. Or, on the Mexican border to GTF out when the shit hits the fan. Distance from military bases would be another key factor.

The midwest (where I am right now) is nice for all the sprint car and short track racing. The Bay area, specifically Cupertino, hath its charms as well (a boyfriend) and I may end up there before the summer is out. Midwest!

Postby Miz Untitled » Thu Apr 13, 2006 11:00 am

My little burg in east central IL is an oasis in the Great Corn/Bean desert.

Excellent soil, good farmer's market, relatively low cost of living/housing prices, hopping music scene, low-powered FM radio station in addition to all the mainstream stuff, v active Indymedia center, good public transit, bike-friendly, excellent small-but-rising food cooperative, etc. The winters aren't too terrible, almost everything grows here, and there's lots of knowledge-sharing going on.

It wants to be Madison, Jr. It's a ways off, but it's coming along. We've been here 10 years and it's changed in many positive ways. If I left to go anywhere, it'd be overseas...

If the question`s open to former inhabitants, I wont set foot back in the US until this whole weird fascism thing blows over. Prefer europe or canada. Though canada might get swallowed by the downstairs neighbors yet, in which case europes the best place to be, for me.

Edited by: 4911 at: 4/13/06 10:11 am
