DSP can be in hardware, software, firmware -- you name it. It's a pretty generic term. Do you want to start talking about specific hardware devices that are employed by the various providers of this "eFax" service? I don't. Have at it if you want, but you've been arguing against points that I never made this whole time, and I'm just getting bored now.

Quote:
I'm treating you like sh*t, because you treat others like sh*t.
It's an eye for an eye, loser.

Thanks, Hammurabi -- you "rule".

Are you too pious, too young or too immature to just type "shit"? Sticking in a wildcard for one letter doesn't change the meaning, or the sentiment.
"A crooked stick will cast a crooked shadow."
Edited by: thoughtographer at: 5/19/06 4:38 pm

Rick Ross has nothing on SubGenius, but there is an "ex cult survivors website". This led me to read some more in Rick Ross, about Madona, Cruise, and Satchivananda (whom I visited for a week). How many things can you get wrong, thoughtographer?

Quote:
Digital Signal Processors are microprocessors.
They are physical chips on a circuit board, whether they be from a PC 's sound card, on a modem, on a router, or on a Speak and Spell, it's not a "generic term", it's hardware.

Yes, you're right -- it is hardware. However Digital Signal Processing is often implemented in software or firmware, or offloaded to a more powerful processor on the host. I tend to confuse initialisms, and in this case I was conflating "HSP" with "DSP". Sorry.

Anyway, my point was that a Digital Signal Processor still needs an ADC on one end, and a DAC on the other, which makes it analogous to a modem by performing the same task. See: this stuff can be abstracted until the cows come home, or they're mutilated by reptilian aliens working for the "PTB" on their way there.

P.S. - I'm proud of you for uncensoring yourself for my sake. Doesn't it feel good?

Quote:
Everything that you've written so far has been wrong !
You are the Lord of Disinfo !

Your ego just won't let you admit that you have no clue.
It's highly amusing, but kinda sad.

Now, even someone like you must admit that we're both variously "right" and "wrong" on this thread at any given point. To say that I have "no clue" and that "everything" I've written so far is "wrong" is a sinister exaggeration resulting from that large axe you're grinding.
"A crooked stick will cast a crooked shadow."
Edited by: thoughtographer at: 5/19/06 5:30 pm

hava, I don't mean that you shouldn't solicit tech help on this site under USUAL circumstances....these are just unusual circumstances, weird acrimony about digital signal processing vs digital signal processors.

Somehow, in various ways, your document will be transformed into something that a fax, hooked to a phone line, will be able to understand. Somehow, the online folks have a way to hook send signals over phone lines.

Evidently, the fate of the world depends on whether you call any device or process that allows this "a modem" or only a subset of such devices.

Meanwhile, for the edification of all, a list of things DSP can stand for:

Quote:

* The sterilisation process Dry Sterilisation Process for the cold and fast sterilisation of surfaces.
* The science and engineering discipline of digital signal processing.
* The microprocessor class of digital signal processors.
* Dylan Server Pages is a template engine for providing dynamic web site content using the Dylan language.
* The U.S. Air Force Defense Support Program early-warning satellites.
* The Democratic Left Party (Turkey) (Demokratik Sol Parti)
* The German State Party (Deutsche Staatspartei), a minor political party of the Weimar Republic period.
* One of several (unrelated) political parties called the Democratic Socialist Party:
o Democratic Socialist Party (Australia), now the Democratic Socialist Perspective
o Democratic Socialist Party (Japan)
o Democratic Socialist Party (Prabodh Chandra) (India)
* Deputy Superintendent in the Singapore Police Force
* The Deutscher Spiele Preis, a board games award

I think the implications are clear. The wrong choice could imperil our very souls. You have been warned.

Quote:
Somehow, in various ways, your document will be transformed into something that a fax, hooked to a phone line, will be able to understand.

That's pretty much the only real point that I've been trying to make here, and since this hypothetical fax machine contains a modem as one of its critical components which are often replaced by their computer peripheral counterparts (modem and scanner), the two things can be considered interchangeable in this context. People still use fax machines and fax modems, so while they may be "obsolete" in the sense that they're growing less and less fashionable -- they are still in use.

Quote:
Obsolescence is when a person or object is no longer wanted even though it is still in good working order.

From Wikipedia, for whatever that's worth -- but it seems to be the motivation behind johnny nemo's reasoning, and THAT is what I take issue with.
"A crooked stick will cast a crooked shadow."
Edited by: thoughtographer at: 5/19/06 5:51 pm
