Mainly because of Zidane, the sublime memory of Cantona and the take it to the streets attitude.

Allez! Allez!

Of interest --

Bogart's Nod in the Marseillaise Scene:
A Physical Gesture in Casablanca

Richard Raskin

When the stage has been properly set, the simplest physical gesture can be charged with meaning in a film. Bogart's nod in the Marseillaise scene in Casablanca stands out as perhaps the most striking example of this important resource in cinematic storytelling, and one particularly deserving of a closer look.

The situation
Rick (Humphrey Bogart) and Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid) are upstairs in Rick's office, with Laszlo offering to buy the letters of transit. Rick refuses, and in reply to Laszlo's question as to why, Rick tells him to ask his wife. They then hear German officers singing Die Wacht am Rhein in the main room below. Rick and Laszlo go out on the balcony and look down at the Germans singing. Renault is watching from the bar, his eyebrow raised. Laszlo, listening tight-lipped, finally walks down the steps and goes decisively over to the band, telling them: "Play the Marseillaise! Play it!" The band members look down, then up toward Rick, who nods to them. Having obtained Rick's approval, the band then begins to play the Marseillaise, and one of the most electrifying scenes in film history unfolds.

Yeh, see? Bogart, Cantona, and taking it to the streets. And I've always been more communard than communist. And Zidane and the French squad are headed for another WC title. Allez les beurs!

There's this:

Quote:
"La Marseillaise" is a song written and composed by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle at Strasbourg on April 25, 1792. Its original name is "Chant de guerre de l'Armée du Rhin" ("Marching Song of the Rhine Army" and it was dedicated to Marshall Nicolas Luckner, a Bavarian-born French officer from Cham. It became the rallying call of the French Revolution and got its name because it was first sung on the streets by troops (fédérés) from Marseille upon their arrival in Paris.

Now the national anthem of France, it was also once the anthem of the international revolutionary movement. Indeed, the words of "The Internationale", written in 1870 by Eugène Pottier were originally set to the tune of "La Marseillaise". During the Paris Commune (1871), that was adopted as an anthem; it was only in 1888 that Pierre Degeyter re-set "The Internationale" to the tune known today.

Because great numbers of people on the left around the world, particularly anarchists, took inspiration from the Commune, the song became an international symbol of leftism. For instance, in Chicago, Illinois, the Haymarket Martyrs went to their deaths singing the "Marseillaise". In 1917, after the collapse of the tsarist regime "La Marseillaise" and "The Internationale" were both used as de facto anthems of Russia.[1][2] Within a few years "The Internationale" gradually prevailed and became the only anthem. The Russian lyrics of "Marseillaise", "Otrechemsya ot starogo mira", are very different from the French lyrics; both French and Russian lyrics were sung in Russia.
The song was banned in Vichy France and German-occupied areas during World War II and singing it was an act of resistance (see also Chant des Partisans). It was also banned under the French Empire: the France of Napoléon and Napoléon III either used different anthems or no anthem at all for the period of 1799 to 1870.

"La Marseillaise" was re-arranged by Hector Berlioz around 1830.
In 1882, Pyotr Tchaikovsky used extensive quotes from the Marseillaise to represent the invading French army in his 1812 Overture. This was an anachronism, as the Marseillaise was the French anthem in Tchaikovsky's day, but not Napoleon's.

In France itself, the anthem (and particularly the lyrics) has become a somewhat controversial issue since the 1970s. Some consider it militaristic and xenophobic, and many propositions have been made to change the anthem or the lyrics. However, "La Marseillaise" has been associated throughout history with the French Republic and its values, making a change unlikely.

Recently, and despite the lyrics, it was largely sung by anti-racist protesters after Jean-Marie Le Pen advanced to the second round of the 2002 presidential election.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Marseillaise

and from WML's link above:

Quote:
an early idealistic period, when - as both Renault and Victor Laszlo point out - Rick ran guns to the Ethiopians and fought on the loyalist side in the Spanish civil war, earning himself a place of honor on the Nazis' blacklist;

a central period, filling most of the present of the film, characterized largely by a cynical and selfish neutrality, as expressed by the line spoken twice by Rick - "I stick my neck out for nobody"; yet even here, there are flashes of profound integrity, as when Rick tells Ferrari (Sidney Greenstreet) that he doesn't buy or sell human beings; presumably, Rick's fall into cynicism was triggered by what he experienced as a betrayal at the Paris railroad station when he received Ilsa's farewell note;

a final period, in which Rick overcomes his selfish and self-pitying stance and returns to the fight against oppression.

Allons!

Edited by: jc at: 7/2/06 1:52 pm

I don't mean to be obtuse, as I'm a fan of the Marseillaise, but why should we be singing it? Are we starting the revolution now? If so, it's about damn time.

On edit: Oh, I see. It's World Cup Fever again. Devastating disease. Of course, it's only harmful if your team loses.

Edited by: Mentalgongfu at: 7/3/06 12:13 am

Would not have thought either france or italy after the first two weeks. Pardonez-moi blanc, but I'll have to say: "forza italia!" (Not that Forza Italia, of course.) I have a very significant italian other who will be exerting tender pressure on my loyalty...

one more Zidane

Postby friend catcher » Thu Jul 06, 2006 7:41 am

The 'Auld Alliance' demands I root for France. Hope Zidane pulls it off and tells Le Pen and his inbred cronies where to put their heads. Could never root for Italy, too corrupt.
news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/...993482.stm
and wtf was this about www.timesonline.co.uk/art...27,00.html

Edited by: friend catcher at: 7/6/06 5:44 am

In the end, it's just 2 hours of merciful distraction (hopefully graced with some uncorrupted, beautiful football) from the wider running atrocity. How long do these newfound love afairs with one's nation really last?

Quote:
What is it about Italians and falling over?

heh, good question. hypersensitive? hypertheatrical? I shall inquire further on that and hopefully get back to the board with an answer...
