I'm slowly getting the impression you don't have much respect for the body mod community, but I hope I'm wrong. One of my recent(and entertaining) moments was becoming aquainted with a very well established artist, and of all things, the guy is a rabid chemtrail...person(for want of a better word, heh).

Go easy on the counter-culture folk; many of us are turned off for a reason, but definately aren't tuned out. This lady you cite isn't a very good example of the general mindset. Matter of fact, her piercings and tattoos don't have much to do with any of it, but I wouldn't be saying anything about it at all if you hadn't made that catagorization so plain.

Every group has a Village Idiot, even ours.
____________________
Oderint, dum metuant

I see those types also. I just tell them "put up or shut up".
Nothing like a couple of tours in the desert to modify a loud misinformed bigot.
The ex-military types that say similar stuff, I tell them "Hey, Halliburton and Blackwater are still hireing, and they pay better than the army".
It usually shuts them right up, or softens them up for some real diologue.

That's bizarre--I know many, many multiply-pierced and/or tattooed folk here and every one of them is about as liberal/tolerant/live-n-let-live as they come. Maybe it's a regional difference between the coasts...? Or maybe it just proves that you can't tell a book by its cover.

LilyPat

Believe me, I have no qualms with countercultural folks -- being one myself, in thought if not in my outward appearance. I'm kinda surprised a couple of you latched onto the description. I was simply trying to describe a bit about what the woman looked like.

I know plenty of tattooed people, and tattoo artists. I don't have any tatts -- they're just not my thing. But I'd never judge anyone for being inked.

It's just that it was 180 degrees from what I expect when I talk with someone who fits that description. That what she was saying was massively offensive kind of went without saying, I thought. IOW, the only surprising thing, to me, was that she was so different from the folks I know here who are into body mod.

LilyPat

That's odd, I had almost the same conversation some thirty years ago, except the other guy was wearing a leisure suit.

Marley quotes

Postby robertdreed » Thu Jul 20, 2006 8:00 pm

The Bob Marley quotes- from the song "War"- are actually Marley's putting the words of another into song ( duly credited by Marley. ) They're from Haile Selassie's address to the League of Nations following the invasion of his country, Ethopia, by Mussolini's Italy, back in the 1920s.

I think we've all made the mistake of expecting someone to think like us because they look like us. What we do more often is think they won't because they don't. That's probably worse because it's so many opportunities missed.

Here's a letter from this mornings local paper, The Press. I don't think it's too far off-topic...

From: Omar Din,

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to inform The Press as well as the community and public in general what the realistic situation is in the South Asian Community (in particular the Muslim one) on issues of integration, socialisation and assimilation into British Culture and Society.

The first issue is the contrasting hypocrisy shown with the anniversary of 7/7.

I travelled to Leeds and Bradford to find out what had changed and if attitudes were differen how wrong the politicans et al were!

The majority of people I met claimed that the suicide bombers had their sympathies and that the self appointed ’corrupt’ community leaders and elders were living in an ancient timewarp of patriachal dominance and bigotry.

There is further evidence of Pakistani caste groups affiliations to 11 different Militiant Organisations/Extremist groups and Fundamentalist Radicals operating in Pakistan alone, namely Lashkar-e-taiybah, Abu harif Martyrs Brigade, Jaishe-e-Mohammedan, The Al-Mehdis and at least 10 Kashmiri militant/terror groups in Mirpur and Kashmir area alone!

The UK authorities and intelligence agencies were informed about the events unfolding since 1999 but have only acted in hindsight, the point is the public must fend for itself.

It comes as no surprise that there is a huge cultural clash not only with the new generation of British Asians and the host society but also with their parents, the elders and 1st-2nd generation of immigrants who brought with them 3,500 years of caste racism and ideology.

I have spent the last decade working as a Communtiy Activist and Advice Worker in West Yorkshire in an Multi-Cultural/Ethnic Enviroment, therefore I believe I am in a great position to comment on the problems communities face.

I am in the process of compiling a number of reports, so in the meantime I will raise some awareness and concerns that aspects of my findings have revealed.

There are continuing calls for integration and assimilation into British society something which I have called for nearly a decade. The question is how is that possible when South Asians are divided into Caste sub-groups with rigid groups of superior/inferior status all linked at birth to religion.

I believe integration will be immensly difficult unless we tackle the root causes of social isolation, exclusion and enforced segregation of which caste prejudice is the major culprit.

Unless legislation under the Race Relations Act is introduced I fear as do many Asian scholars that caste is and will be an ideal breeding ground for terror and subversive elements.

The worrying aspect is that the South Asian nuclear powers (India and Pakistan) have the world’s most corrupt states, and the worst history of human rights record of abuses that make them the top five worst nations.

Finally how will our people (South Asians) integrate in UK or any other society when they have seriously divided themselves for over 3,400 years into mythical oppresive caste groups.

They are truly stuck in a warped, delusionary ancient timewarp.

www.thepressnewspaper.co.uk/TheForum.asp
(Las letter on that page)

If only them damn Iraqis would get tattos and dye their hair!
