To the New "Alice" -- please find another name

Postby AlicetheCurious » Tue Oct 17, 2006 7:04 am

Alice, I am Alicethecurious. When I was registering for the ezboard, I tried to use the name "Alice", which I was using to comment in Jeff's blog. I was informed that the name was already in use, so I just added "thecurious" so I could still use it and be identified as the same "Alice" as in the blog comments.

Please change your ezboard name to make it less confusing, and less disorienting for me -- I'm sure you have your own strong voice, and neither you nor I would like to be confused with someone else.

Thank you for your understanding.

Sorry I seem unable to change names ...have tried but it isn't happy .
Problem is ,it only allows one name /email address.

Once Jeff moves the boards from EBoards maybe I can change it then? In the meantime I aplogise for any confusion I have caused but there is nothing I can do.

Do you think it would work if you closed down your account and then opened a new one under another name?

Anybody else have any ideas?

BTW, it's true that "Alice" is a very evocative name, at least for me. I can't begin to guess how many times I read "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass" when I was a kid, in English and French -- it must be in the hundreds. I identified with her common sense, her curiosity, and also with her efforts to deal pragmatically with the bizarre and incomprehensible logic used by the 'adults' she encounters.

Anyway, if it doesn't work, then you, being in the UK, can keep the name "Alice", and I'll change my name to "Sheba"; at least it's vaguely Middle Eastern, which is kind of appropriate. On the other hand, I've known a couple of German Shepherd dogs that were named Sheba, including one of mine.

If I have to, I'll come up with something.

I did a typo with my name when I first registered here, and while I waited patiently for the solution to come to me, trying different things here and there, I ended up closing my account and re-registering. I think it might be the only way to change your name.

Why are you badgering this person to change their name? Why would you even ask this person to trouble themselves with changing their name when you could just as easily do it, if it troubles you so deeply.

Sheeeeesh .....

Been thinking about switching to a more adventurous cheese, like Caciocavallo which means "Cheese on horseback" in Italian. Thus, I am prepared to auction my name to the highest bidder. The rights to my previous posts will be auctioned separately.

maggrwaggr, after nearly 2 years and 415 posts, not to mention countless comments to Jeff's blog, AlicetheCurious (or "Alice" in the blog) has come to mean a lot to me. Call me a sentimental fool.

Also, there is a dialogue going on here, over time and covering a range of topics, between people who may be anonymous, but whose personas are generally recognizable and unique.

Over time, our dialogue becomes richer, deals with issues with more depth, because of its history over many topics.

That's one of the things that has kept me coming back here, just like someone might keep coming back to the same pub, because it's "where everybody knows your name", so you don't have to start from scratch all the time, introducing yourself all over again.

Having two "Alices", one from the UK and one from Egypt, with completely different backgrounds and perspectives, I think, introduces confusion and the possibility of misunderstandings.

I look forward to getting to know the new "Alice", and benefitting from her unique contributions to this forum, without the unnecessary complication of having to disentangle her views from my own.

There's not much I can do about it, except to ask that she change her name to one that clearly identifies her, just as mine used to clearly identify me.

Everyone refers to her as simply "Alice". The newer "alice" can start over and create a more differentiated screenname, maybe one that'll provide her a nickname that won't be confused with the original "Alice".

Greencrow0, you just caused me a lot of embarassment. I hadn't checked that link before, so there I am on the phone, talking to an acquaintance, I idly click the link, see the headline and start giggling uncontrollably. I must have sounded like an idiot, because I just kept laughing without any explanation (how could I explain?) and got off the phone as quickly as I could.

Even so, thanks for the laugh.
