Something seems weird, man...

Man's Son Part I

The conventional view is that Charlie and company were a cabal of acid-fried, impoverished hippies attempting to start a race war between blacks and whites that would fulfill the deranged fantasies of their charismatic leader. Or so one of Manson's prosecutors, Vincent Bugliosi, would have us believe even though the above statement alone is ripe with contradictions. And those are hardly the only ones. Lets just consider a few more...

For starters, anyone who has read a decent amount of literature on the Manson crimes is inevitably left to wonder why Charlie wasn't busted well before his crime spree escalated to murder. Local law enforcement officers had ample reasons to bust Manson at any given time during the 1967-1969 period in which he was last out of prison. Preston Guillory, a former deputy sheriff in Los Angeles, stated:

"A few weeks prior to the Spahn Ranch raid, we were told that we weren't to arrest Manson or any of his followers. We had a sheaf of memos on Manson -that they had automatic weapons at the ranch, that the citizens had complained about hearing machine gun fire at night, that firemen from the local fire station had been accosted by armed members of Manson's band and told to get out of the area. Deputies started asking, 'Why aren't we gonna make the raid soon?' I mean, Manson's a parole violator, we know there's narcotics and booze. He's living at the ranch with a bunch of minor girls in complete violation of his parole. Deputies at the station quite frankly became very annoyed that no action was being taken against Manson...

"...You have to remember that Charlie was on federal parole all this time from '67 to '69. Do you realize all the shit he was getting away with while he was on parole? Now here's the kicker. Before the Tate killings he had been arrested at Malibu twice for statutory rape. Never got (imprisoned for parole violation). Manson liked to ball young girls, so he did his thing and he was released, and they didn't put any parole on him. But somebody very high up was controlling everything that was going on and was seeing to it that we didn't bust Manson."

(The Shadow Over Santa Susana, Adam Gorightly, pg. 148)

Image

The 'house on Cielo Drive' is where the Tate murders occurred while Abigail Folger, a member of the coffee dynasty, was one of the victims at that site, for those unaware. Further, there was much more going on at the Esalen Institute than Sanders lets on. Adam Gorightly goes a few steps further, stating:

"... Folger attended Esalen Institute seminars. Process founder Robert DeGrimston lectured at Esalen, and Manson made at least one appearance there, crooning groovy tunes with his guitar to a less than receptive audience... Esalen -like many another human potential center -was co-opted by the intelligence community, to one degree or another, just as Stanford and other universities -funded by the CIA -were using street shamans and anybody else they could get their hands on for experimental purposes, dispensing to them LSD and other drugs under clinical conditions at their research facilities.

"At such human potential centers as Esalen, group 'dissonance' or stress was introduced to destroy an individual's previous beliefs, and to replace the destroyed personality with a new-group oriented personality. These so called 'group encounters' and 'sensitivity programs' were used in much the same way that Manson programmed his flock, systematically breaking down an individual's personality to be reconstructed along the lines of the group-mind. The enigmatic Ronald Stark -big-time LSD entrepreneur and possible MK-ULTRA operative -was an Esalen financial supporter. Keep in mind that many people involved in the human potential movement -who were often bankrolled by CIA front organizations like the Human Ecology Fund -brought good intentions into their endeavors, although there can be no argument that the intelligence community were using the likes of Tim Leary and others of his ilk as test subjects in behavior modification experiments."

(The Shadow Over Santa Susana, pg. 164)

Man's Son Part II

Another similarity between the Manson and Polanski clans was their fondness of drugs and their attempts to sell them. David McGowan lays it out:

"Another connection between the killers and victims was provided by their shared interest in drug trafficking. Several of the victims -including Voytek Frykowski, Abigail Folger, and Sharon Tate herself -were linked to the trafficking of hallucinogens. Rosemary LaBianca was a known trafficker of methamphetamine, and likely other drugs as well. Frykowski had reportedly secured a deal just before the murders that would have made him the exclusive distributor of MDA in the L.A. area, his operation financed with coffee heiress Folger's considerable financial resources. Jay Sebring, who before the murders had once appeared in an underground movie that also featured Mansonite Bobby Beausoleil, appears to have been involved in the drug trade as well. A man named Joel Rostau is known to have delivered drugs to Sebring at the Cielo house just hours before the murders. Rostau was found murdered the next year in New York City. Another Sebring associate showed up dead just a month later in Florida. Immediately following the killings on Cielo Drive, Sebring's house was thoroughly cleaned by friends before police arrived to conduct a search."
(Programmed to Kill, pg. 141)

Image

As noted above, Rosemary LaBianca was involved in the LA drug scene at some level. Her husband and the only other victim at the LaBianca residence, Leno, also had ties to the Mafia. He served on the board of directors for a Hollywood bank police came to believe was Mafia connected -several board members were later convicted of fraud as a result of the LaBianca murder investigation. At the time of his death Leno was apparently in deep to the mob. Adam Gorightly states:

"In the weeks following the murders, detectives found themselves weaving through the complex maze of Leno's financial affairs. According to a police report, Leno was a '...chronic gambler...' with a '...$500.00 dollar a day habit..." At the time of his death -it has been alleged -Leno was in debt to the tune of $30,000 to Frankie Carbo's Mafia organization. Manson, it should be noted, previously hung around with Carbo in prison. As he admitted to Geraldo Rivera: 'I knew Frankie Carbo. Frankie Carbo knew Leno LiBianca.' "
(The Shadow Over Santa Susana, pg. 113)

ImageIt is not unfair to say that virtually everyone of the initial Manson Family victims were up knee-deep in the L.A. underworld of organized crime, especially in the drug market. It's also interesting to note that at the time of the Tate/LiBianca killings, a major shakeup in the California hallucinogen market was occurring. For a little further north, at roughly the same time Manson was attending Esalen Institute and few days before the murders, Brotherhood of Eternal Love founder 'Farmer' John Griggs kicked the bucket via an overdose. At the time the Brotherhood were the largest marijuana and hashish smugglers in California.

With Griggs out of the way, the Brotherhood was opened up to the mysterious figure of Ronald Stark, who would turn them into the largest LSD distribution network in the world. Stark in turn was widely suspected of working with US intelligence. This has led some researchers, such as David McGowan, to theorize that the Manson killings were a part of some kind coup for control of the California hallucinogen market. McGowan states:

"Were the Manson killings in reality part of what might be dubbed 'The Great Acid Coup of 1969'? Were they the result of an operation aimed at, among other things, killing off some competitors, intimidating others, and consolidating control of the hallucinogenic drug market? The possibility clearly exists. Police originally were drawn to the theory that the killings were drug related."
(Programmed to Kill, pg. 142)

Image

Investigative journalist Maury Terry came to similar conclusions while researching the Manson case. Terry states:

"A Los Angeles source who was knowledgeable about the Manson set in 1969 said: 'Frykowski was the motive. He had stung his own suppliers for a fair amount of money and that didn't go down well at all with the people at the top of the drug scene here. And to make it worse, he was upsetting the structure of the LSD marketplace by dealing independently, outside the established chain of supply. He was a renegade.' "
(The Ultimate Evil, pg. 489)

Missing Link Wrap Up

ImageThe leader of the old BEL regime, a very well intentioned man named John Griggs, died on August 3 from bad synthetic psilocybin that was supposedly making the rounds. Bloggers Cybot and Sherm maniac suggest the poison that killed Griggs and/or made Bobby's biker clients sick may have been a belladonna derivative, or even PCP (aka the PeaCe Pill, aka synthetic mescaline). Patty has also suggested that perhaps the bad trip was PMA. It is probable that drugs were marketed on the street as synthetic mescaline, psilocybin, or THC when in fact they were not. This is what the Hell's Angels had done up north: they sold "acid" that was really STP, and synthetic THC which was actually PCP. The old switcheroo is what street dealers of Molly still do today: they will tell you that Molly is a purer form of MDMA when actually, it's the same old shit.

There was a huge shakedown going on that summer: who would control the manufacture and distribution of the growing psychedelics trade in California and beyond? Whoever won that season of Survivor, Patty supposes. Most sources claim that Johnny Gale and Ronald Stark were the big financial winners in the end. The counterculture was of the general opinion that the "piggies" were trying to profit in one way or another from the drugs that had helped to define the grassroots hippie movement. The piggies were greedily taking it all away: the counterculture's adopted way of life and one of their major means of financial support, aka the distribution of marijuana and LSD. This seemed, to the hippies or slippies or whatever the heck you want to call them, highly immoral because the rich were only getting richer while the poor got poorer. The piggies did not need a bigger piece of the pie, but they were taking it anyway.

ImageMany leftist organizations actually praised the Family's actions: most notably at the December, 1969 meeting of the Weathermen's Students for a Democratic Society in Flint, Michigan. Bernardine Dohrn is quoted as having said "First they killed those pigs, then they ate dinner in the same room with them, then they even shoved a fork into the pig Tate's stomach! Wild!" Yes, some of the details in her description are off. Nevertheless, the stunning result of her words for the rest of the meeting involved attendees flashing each other a finger "fork" as a symbol of solidarity and resolve. Believe it or not, today Bernardine Dohrn is a Professor of Law at Northwestern University. Truth is stranger than fiction, after all.

If Patty was to elucidate her theory in 300 words or less, she thinks that Gary Hinman and John Griggs got caught in the middle of a huge turf war, and perished. Presumably this was due to their trusting and kind dispositions, chemical talents (or, lack thereof), business connections and affinity with the fairly peaceful, pre-1969 scene. Voytek, according to Roman himself, had stayed at Cielo "a bit too long:" the implication being that Voytek was into something dangerous. Indeed, even though Voytek went to film school and came from a wealthy family, he was at the time of his murder quite broke, which must have been psychologically difficult for him. He attempted to get a writing career going to no avail. He was well connected, and he needed money, FAST. He and Gibby had ingested an MDA-like compound within days or hours of their death according to their autopsies, which is telling. Roman immediately suspected John Phillips and apparently ransacked his car looking for the proof. Is it possible that Roman was not completely oblivious to the situation that led up to the murder of his wife and child? Could he have stopped what happened? This has actually been suggested to Patty by a somewhat reliable source.

The staff at Jay's fancy hair salons apparently heard about his death well before the public did, went to his home, and "cleaned" it. Jay's salons and Rosemary's dress shops would have made great dealerships in the new regime, but it was not meant to be. Leno likely funded Rosemary's shady business with shady money he made with his shady banking and gambling friends. Like Steve Parent's death, the deaths of Sharon and Gibby were incidental to the main goal of the evening. But because they were rich and beautiful, a (flawed) argument could be made that they were piggies, too. If it is true that Katie Krenwinkel and Bill Garretson were friendly, then he was not killed, presumably because he was not a piggie. Rather, he was "us," not "them."

Axl Rose, Charles Manson, Operation Rescue & Nazi Chic

But did you know about Manson’s nazi beliefs and practices both prior to and after his arrest for the Tate mass murder? Manson has often been photographed with a self-inscribed swastika tattoo. His avowed purpose in planning the killings was to blame them on Blacks and try to foment an apocalyptic race war. Even inside prison, Manson continued to associate with neo-nazis.

Image

In 1982, Manson was visited repeatedly at Vacaville prison by northern California nazi leader Perry “Red” Warthan. Warthan shortly thereafter killed one of his own teen-age followers, Joe Hoover, after Hoover admitted that he and other members of Warthan’s band had stuffed racist flyers into lockers at Oroville (CA) High School. Support for Manson was part of Warthan’s program in seeking to organize a group of youthful neo-Nazis. In June, 1983 he was sentenced to prison for murdering Hoover, whom he called a race traitor and informant who deserved to die.

Manson’s earnings from the G N’R song are supposed to go to the son of one of his victims, under the terms of a 1971 court order. But Manson has pocketed most of the money he has made over his years in prison, including tens of thousands of dollars for interviews, and cash sent in by his supporters and fans.

Ignoring his nazism, Satanism and mass murders — or perhaps glorifying him because of it – young fans have made Manson a cult figure, and exploitative entrepreneurs have rushed in to make a quick buck with Manson-themed gear. T-shirts and even children’s clothes are available. Some are bootlegged, but at least one, which Axl Rose popularized by wearing on Guns N‘ Roses’ last tour, is officially licensed by Manson himself. The T-shirt is produced here in southern California by the Lemmons brothers of Zooport Riot Gear in Newport Beach and pays Manson ten cents for each shirt. Dan Lemmons of Zooport told the press, “There’s a good side to Charlie that hasn’t gotten out… Kids today don’t look at Charlie Manson as a mass murderer. He’s like a rebellious figure.”

Perhaps it is the neo-nazi nature of Manson’s rebelliousness that makes him such an appealing figure to the Lemmons brothers. They are giving a “a good chunk of the proceeds” from the Manson shirt – they won’t say exactly how much – to Operation Rescue, Randall Terry’s fascistic anti-abortion group.

Image

In defending the shirt, which shows Manson and the slogan “Charlie Don’t Surf,” Lemmons said to the San Francisco Examiner, “People get all worked up over some murders that happened almost 25 years ago.

Why not be concerned with the babies who are murdered in the U.S. every year,“ referring to his anti-abortion beliefs. He also referred to Manson as a philanthropist and environmentalist. Manson’s environmentalism is probably akin to the anti-immigrant, "preserve the white-man’s land” variety preached by neo-nazi Tom Metzger.

Axl Rose and Guns N’ Roses were promoted heavily by Metzger and WAR (White Aryan Resistance) when, on an early album, they recorded lyrics attacking gays and immigrants. Rose claimed at the time that he was only singing, and that his views were not racist. But with the flap over Manson, and his promotion of the shirt which benefits both neo-nazi murderer Manson and the Christian-fascistic Operation Rescue, Axl Rose’s true colors are showing through.

Image

What is the justification for a musician glorifying a man who killed a musician? What is the hypocrisy of abortion opponents promoting a man whose followers stabbed a pregnant woman to death, killing her after she pleaded for the life of her unborn child, stabbing her in the abdomen with a fork? What is the popularity among young rock fans of a man whose nazi associate murdered a teenaged band member for confessing to circulating racist flyers? This is the sinister appeal of the irrational that promotes what Wilhelm Reich referred to as “the mass psychology of fascism.” It is rooted in racism, hatred of women’s independence, and a desire for fascist authority disguised as “rebelliousness.”

Man's Son or the Children of the Sun?

ImageImage
A.B.-er Kenneth Como relaxing with a Manson Family member

Despite these setbacks, Manson would continue to forge alliances with Nazi-leaning organizations. One of the most notable and longest standing has been with James N. Mason of the Universal Order. Mason was a veteran of George Lincoln Rockwell's American Nazi Party (ANP) and after Rockwell's death, signed up with the militant National Socialist Liberation Front (NSLF), an organization founded by fellow American Nazi Party member Joseph Charles Tommasi in Southern California during the 1970s. After engaging in a dialogue with Manson, Mason launched the Universal Order during the early 1980s.

"... In 1980 James N. Mason (n. 1952), a violent Nazi who had joined Rockwell in the mid-sixties, revived the NASL (it had lapsed with Tommasi's assassination in 1975) as a forerunner of new militant American whites supremacist movements committed to an armed struggle against the so-called Zionist Occupied Government (ZOG), a current far-right epiphet for the U.S. government as a Jewish-controlled puppet regime. Mason relaunched Siege, in which he preached violence, racial strife and an all-out war against the hated system. In his quest for extremist mentors, Mason then became obsessed Charles Manson (b. 1934), the notorious killer serving life in prison for conspiracy in the murders of the actress Sharon Tate and others in 1969. Although Manson had carved a swastika into his forehead, his politics were vague. However, Mason regarded Manson as the supreme outlaw and adopted the convicted criminal as the spiritual leader of his neo-Nazi group, the Universal Order (the name came from Manson). Mason's Nazi religion embraced both Hitler and Manson as saviors, thereby combining Koehl's messianic piety with the millenarian violence of Tommasi. In the pages of Siege, Mason paid extravagant tribute to Hitler, Tommasi, Manson and Savitri Devi."
(Black Sun, Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke, pg. 19)

Image
James N. Mason

In addition to Joseph Charles Tommasi, another former American Nazi Party member was gaining a following in Southern California during the Family's most active years. This would be James K Warner, who relocated to Los Angeles in 1966. There he became a high priest the Odinist Religion and Nordic Faith Movement. He later made contact with the Odinist Fellowship of Else Christensen. I've found no evidence of contact between Warner and Manson, but one can imagine them having some degree of shared interests. But lets us return to James N. Mason for a moment.

Image
Else Christensen

Mason's ties to the American Nazi Party are especially interesting in light on the long reputed ties between Manson and the Process Church of the Final Judgment. As was noted before here, the Process (an organization which also had a morbid fascination with Nazism) had been in contact with George Lincoln Rockwell shortly before his assassination. And here is Manson helping a former ANP member establish his own neo-Nazi outfit while other members of the ANP were active in Southern California at peak Family years. In the case of the pot-smoking Tommasi, he actively tried to recruit among the counterculture. Unfortunately, few investigators have explored these links. But moving along.

Beyond Southern California

Now that the Process has been brought up, I simply must address Maury Terry's allegations on a nation-spanning cult network that Manson was a part of. Per Terry the cult, often referred to as the "Four P-movement," originated with the Process Church of the Final Judgment and had links not only to the Manson Family, but also the Son of Sam killing spree (which have long been suspected of being committed by more than one person), the Cotton Club murder, and the Atlanta child murders, among others.

As I noted before here, I find Terry's claims to be dubious on some levels. But his raw data is compelling even though I believe his sources (including the Son of Sam himself, David Berkowitz) led him to conclusions that are questionable. Most glaring is Terry's blindness to the extent of which this alleged cult dovetailed with assorted right wing groups despite the frequent references to Nazism in Terry's investigation.

Consider for instance a reputed member of the Son of Sam cult, "Big" Fred Cowan. A bodybuilder and "former" member of he US Army (like Berkowitz himself, any number of militia types and, increasingly, mass shooters in general), Cowan went on a rampage in 1977 in New Rochelle, New York at his workplace that left six people dead on Valentine's Day. By all accounts Cowan was an unabashed neo-Nazi.

"No piker when it came to racism, Cowan decorated his attic apartment with portraits of Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler, Wermacht helmets, vintage German weapons, and a Nazi battle flag. He joined the fanatical, Georgia-based National States Rights Party and stocked up on anti-Semitic literature, but friends still thought he was joking when Cowan spoke about the possibility of 'shooting up a synagogue.' In Cowan's view of life, 'Nothing is lower than blacks and Jews except the police who protect them.' "
(Raising Hell, Michael Newton, pg. 113)

Image
"Big" Fred

Curiously, FBI informant and multiple murderer Frazier Glenn Miller was affiliated with the National States Rights Party (NSRP) in the 1970s. Miller, also an Army veteran, would go on to shoot up a synagogue in 2014. In fairness, Miller and Cowan were surely not the only white supremacists to contemplate shooting up a synagogue. It is interesting to note, however, that the NSRP had a strong presence in southern California at this time as well. In Power on the Right, former FBI agent William Turner notes that the NSRP was frequently used as a recruiting ground for the budding patriot militias there. It may well have been a recruiting pool for something else as well. But moving along.

The Templar's Reich Milieu
The Slaves Shall Serve

by Peter-Robert Koenig

Image

The Slaves Shall Serve

For practical purposes we should explicate only the statements of high degree members, since they possess a model character. The two books of the joint founder of the 'Caliphate', James Wasserman, which are advertised even on the official web page of the 'Caliphate', are particularly remarkable. Wasserman also wrote the text which is attached to Crowley's Tarot set. We will discuss however his two politically-oriented works: “The Templars and the Assassins” and “The Slaves Shall Serve”.

On the back of “The Templars…” from the year 2001 William Breeze (chief of the 'Caliphate') and Michael Aquino (once chief of the Temple of Set) express their recommendations; the work therefore receives a special meaning for all members. Wasserman undertakes therein a Tour de Force through the history of the old Knights Templars and constructs, like many O.T.O. — Thelemites, a historical continuity up to the O.T.O. The book brings the old Assassins, the Hashishim, into the drama. The Assassins of Hasan i Sabah were Muslim, politically-motivated killers who eliminated their political enemies selectively.

Following 9/11, such statements have now naturally become problematic. As a sequel, Wasserman penned his second book in which he reports on the current situation. In “The Slaves Shall Serve” of 2004 he calls for readers to reach for weapons: “Buy guns” and “You MUST join the national Rifle Association”.

Many Thelemites maintain a preference for many kinds of martial arts, including Ninjutsu, the Japanese art historically associated with assassination and occult practices. Such pursuits they gladly justify from Liber AL which constantly promotes fighting, war and all kinds of Armageddon scenarios.
Wasserman goes now much further and propagates a “militarism, patriotism”, “a strong military, decisive national self interest” and the “concept of the self-reliant citizen-soldier”. What are his motives?

Wasserman's cry for combat and his call for weapons goes hand in hand with the religious fundamentalism which at present cripples America--or propels the country, depending upon one’s point of view. Wasserman holds that America is the freest country in the world, currently threatened by dark powers and can be released only by Crowley's teachings . In view of real and chimerical threats, the Thelemic faith becomes again an unbroken, combative confession. Wasserman compares evil powers which attack or threaten America with the Thelemic version of Satan = Choronzon, who stands for everything that blocks the magician on his way to perfection. Choronzon can be therefore everything, a woman, an idea, the own Ego, whatever the Thelemite wants. For Crowley, Choronzon was even a completely manifest demon which could be ceremonially evoked. Wasserman proves quite clearly that many Thelemites seem to be religious fanatics who see themselves as do-gooders and a type of master race. And that leaves the question: what now is Evil for Wasserman?

He denounces the U.S. government as a police and monitoring state, the FBI as infiltrated by “psycho-fascists” and he is also afraid of the global rule of “Islamo-fascists” and the United Nations. He not only is anti-European but in his opposition to Communism even defends the Communist hunter Joseph McCarthy. Wasserman is for reinstating public school prayer, as if one can simply replace the word God by a Thelemic divinity (Ra Hoor Khuit, perhaps?). He refers continuously to the John Birch Society, a Right-wing organization opposed to a “global conspiracy", and appoints himself as a sort of Birch role model.

And contrary to all Thelemites and O.T.O.- members I know, Wasserman completely openly proclaims: Become active, write to politicians and newspapers, purchase and stash weapons.

But note: Wasserman sees a line of descent from the O.T.O back to Muslim assassins and warns at the same time of “Islamo- fascists”? Here he must be careful or he will shoot himself in the foot.. He must make a distinction between the selective killing of the Assassins and the random killing of Bin Laden. But this distinction may be lost on some, although selective murdering of specific enemies deemed to be threatening does not seem to worry Wasserman.

He appeals to the American Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, furthermore throwing in the “Charter of Human Rights” (a.k.a. Crowley's Liber OZ) , in which the right to free expression of one’s will is not only required, but likewise the authorization to kill those who refuse this right is “granted.”

Although Wasserman does not write it explicitly, the reader may gather the impression that he compares the 'Caliphate' with the Waco group, which he defends. You remember? A small farm of cultists, up to their neck in weapons, besieged by the FBI. Women and children almost all killed. Wasserman seems to use this tragedy to foment paranoia and imply that the 'Caliphate' might become a similar “noble victim” unless the members stash guns as high as the chimney.

To be fair, not all Thelemites support such positions. I actually met some high degree members who feel embarrassed by Wasserman and consider his books terrible. Nevertheless, his book defending Islamic assassination ("The Templars and the Assassins") is sold on the 'Caliphate’s U.S. Grand Lodge website through their online bookstore.

The Magical Passage to Planetization

Image

Although New Age mumbo-jumbo maintains a special appeal for those seeking spiritual solace, especially for those worn down by the grueling monotony of working-life under capitalism, such nonsense has always boasted its most ardent supporters within the relatively well-to-do. In fact one could almost imagine that there is a direct correlation between financial wealth and an unhealthy addiction to philosophical garbage. Much to the chagrin of Conservative Christians this mental defect seems especially pronounced within elite policy wonks concerned with “world peace” and global governance (i.e. among World Federalists at the United Nations). Here one particularly prominent group that formerly advocated New Age doctrines within the upper echelons of polite society is the little-known Planetary Citizens. Formed in 1974 by Donald Keys, this organization identified itself as a catalyst for global peace, ostensibly through democratic elite planning, albeit mixed with an unhealthy dose of magical thinking.

Donald Keys had already made quite a political name for himself when he formed Planetary Citizens in the early 1970s,[1] as not only had he just finished serving as the executive director of the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy (SANE) and been a speech writer for Secretary-General U Thant, but between 1969 and 1982 he had acted as the World Association of World Federalists’ representative to the United Nations. SANE’s founding co-chair had been Norman Cousins (who at the time was the honorary president of the United World Federalists), and not coincidentally Cousins went on to join Keys as the honorary chairman of Planetary Citizens. Thus paradoxically, like something akin to the magical transformation that affected comic-book superhero Spiderman (who mysteriously obtained supernatural powers from a radioactive spider) Keys and Cousins came to believe that through their limited “exposure” to radioactivity – through their anti-nuclear activism – that they too could utilize magical powers to save the world.[2]

So you might well ask: “what type of magic did Keys and Cousins hope to bring into the service of world peace?” Well as it turns out it was mostly delusions of a spiritual nature. And although there was no web-shooting or climbing walls, gigantic leaps of faith were in aplenty – supernatural leaps of faith that took Keys and his cohorts back into the not-so-ancient make-believe realms of Theosophy. For instance, one especially significant early board member of Planetary Citizens was the spiritual visionary and all round New Age guru, David Spangler, who had recently served as the co-director of the Scottish-based Findhorn Foundation, and had just formed the Lorian Association for Incarnational Spirituality (in the United States).

Of the fourteen board members of Planetary Citizens (as of October 1975) at least three of them were practitioners of Robert Assagioli’s Jungian-inspired Psychosynthesis: an unique form of mystical therapy that provides a direct link between Theosophy and the human potential movement. A connection arises because the creator of Psychosynthesis, Robert Assagioli, had been the Italian representative of Alice Bailey’s Arcane School, and had gone on to found the Meditation Group for the New Age, which has its headquarters at Meditation Mount in Ojai, California.[3]

Furthermore, another Planetary Citizens board member of note is George Christie, who in 1962, along with Keys and several others, helped cofound the International Center for Integrative Studies, an organization that “works to co-create a common consciousness as a seedbed for new visions of positive futures for humanity and the planet…” The past president and now board member of this Center, Laraine Mai, likewise served on the board of Planetary Citizens, and has since gone on to work for the New York Open Center (a “holistic consciousness” learning center), and currently serves on the board of the UN Committee on Spirituality, Values and Global Concerns in New York.

Despite what initial appearances may suggest, that Planetary Citizens was just a marginal home for deluded wackos, this is far from the case, and influential members of the global bourgeois lined up to endorse their goals. A few recognizable “early endorsers” who I have written about in previous articles include Maurice Strong, Aurelio Peccei, Peter Ustinov, Konrad Lorenz, Gunnar Myrdal, the Dalai Lama, and the former Ford Foundation president, Paul Hoffman. One should also observe that Planetary Citizens’ 53 person-strong advisory council was home to a veritable smörgåsbord of New Age hucksters and World Federalists. In the latter category we have secular types like Isaac Asimov (an early member of the American Movement for World Government), and Martin Ennals (the founder of Amnesty International); and in the nonsense category we have Peter Caddy (of Findhorn fame), spiritual guide Sri Chinmoy (who underwent his spiritual training at Sri Aurobindo’s Ashram in Pondicherry, now the home for the New Age Auroville Foundation), Edgar Mitchell (founder of the Institute of Noetic Sciences), William Irwin Thompson (founder of the Lindisfarne Association), and Ervin Laszlo (founder of the Club of Budapest). In 1981 Donald Keys would continue his work with Ervin Laszlo by coauthoring an UN report titled ‘Disarmament, the Human Factor’, but it is to Keys’ subsequent book, Earth at Omega: Passage to Planetization, that we now turn our attention.

I have read the Templars and the Assassins and it was some time ago and it was a pleasant but not earth shaking read.

I have no ultimate opinions about the various personalities around the OTO, especially as there seems to be a clusterfuck of infighting. I do think the formation of the Caliphate was significant and would not be surprised by spooky interests at play.

That said and on another note, I find this to be believable:

KGB Interview - Marc Olmsted

Are you interested in magic-Aleister Crowley etc.?

ImageI was a member of the Crowley lodge O.T.O. (the Caliph Hymanaeus Alpha O.T.O - there are many splinter groups.) This was 1978-1985. I found out Israel Regardie, one of Crowley’s most famous students, was actually in the phone book and lived a mile from where I grew up in L.A. I met him and corresponded with him and he verified the O.T.O. I’d heard about up in Berkeley. It was the Main Lodge at that time.

I am still very sympathetic and Crowley-positive, but ultimately the path seemed too risky for me once I got clean and sober. That’s just a personal thing, but it was hard to ignore that, historically speaking, a lot of Crowley students had a habit of going nuts. Still, I’ve met the sane ones too, like Regardie and the Caliph (aka Grady McMurtry)

Caveat Lector- this person may be suffering from TIDS and/or spinning the story. That said, I suspect there is a significant kernel of truth here...

Why they became member of the O.T.O. 33 They are vermin

1998
From: XXX
To: Peter Koenig

...I am involved with the MUFON chapter here in L**. Suffice to say, I
have an interest in praternatural lifeforms, and have had contact with
"alien" entities. In my several months of going to MUFON meetings, I
have come into contact with researchers with the UFO community who have
opened my eyes regarding Government control and inflitration of occult
societies. My research thus far has led me to believe that the American
Government not only tolerates the existance of the Order in America,
but may be actually assisting in its growth and development. This
should not come as a surprise to you. Do you think Grady was living in
Washington all those years without being in contact with military
associates? I received a first hand education in government involvement
when I entered into the Navy over 10 years ago when I was with the
Temple of Set. I nearly did not survive the experience, but now realize
I was but a pawn in a larger game. Fortunately, I was damaged goods
(heart mumurs) and I was let go. But I cannot obtain a passport as of
yet, and realize that the Order is under close surveillance from the
government. I realized this when after the infamous raids on the
Berkeley Lodges back in 1989 the drug tests on everyone arrested came
back negative.(I was on the warrant to be arrested along with Heidrick,
but fortunately we were both not in Berkeley at the time of the raids,
and the police did not come looking for us.) There was no way in hell
the tests would have come back negative unless the Order had friends in
high places. The police were shocked: It of course gutted their case
against us, and the City of Berkeley had to settle out of court for
$40,000 as the primary reason for the raids in the first place was
because of drug use. When the tests came back all negative, the police
had little proof to show proper cause for the raids. Suffice to say,
word of the settlement got around to all the police agencies in the
U.S., and there has not been a raid on an Order establishment since. In
other words, the Order in America enjoys the protection of the
Government. (Please read "Mind Control, World Control" by Jim Keith.
Adventures Unlimited Press) I was told by MUFON researchers that every
occult society in America has been infiltrated and its leadership
compromised. (i.e. a "mole" who is in contact or in liason with the
Government is pressured or coerced into working with them. In other
words, one of the leaders of the occult group is chosen by the
government to be the link: They either obey or are eliminated. There is
no "choice" in the matter.) So, keep it in the back of your mind who
really controls the Order in America...
