Florida Judge Blocks Paper From Publishing Video Showing Deputies Killing An Inmate
from the keeping-the-public-blissfully-ignorant dept
Wed, Oct 9th 2024 10:58am - Tim Cushing
Call a right “enshrined” all you want, but if a judge decides it’s better to protect law enforcement officers from their own actions than to allow the public to view killings performed in the name of “public safety,” the public gets nothing. Neither do the people serving the public and providing them with information, like the Ocala Gazette, which was recently hit with an order forbidding them from publishing a jailhouse video it had legally obtained.
In 2022, Marion County (Florida) deputies killed Scott Whitley, a mentally ill inmate, during a furious bout of excessive force deployment.
Here’s how the Ocala Gazette described what reporters saw on the jailhouse video:
The guards managed to get him face down on the ground, get a hold of his arms and legs, and continue to tase him. Whitley was no longer resisting them, but continued to scream “please,” and asked the guards to stop tasing him.
About two minutes passed and the guards continued to attempt to put Whitley into handcuffs while they deployed tasers

The Murder of Vince Foster: America's Would-Be Dreyfus Affair Paperback – September 24, 2020
by David Martin
In the case of the conviction and imprisonment of Captain Alfred Dreyfus on false espionage charges in late-19th century France, the initially small number of people who doubted the government and the press and worked for justice for Captain Dreyfus were known as "Dreyfusards." Doubt about the official version of the story of how President Bill Clinton's deputy White House Counsel Vincent W. Foster, Jr., died was also confined to a few individuals in the early days, at least among those who would speak up. By the terminology borrowed from France, David Martin was an original "Dreyfusard." In time, he was joined by people with a higher profile, but after Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr's team rendered its long-delayed opinion that the original "suicide" judgment had been correct, most of them dropped by the wayside. Martin, who as a senior at Davidson College

The Fifth Circuit seems to love nothing more than creating more distance between cops and accountability. But, every so often, it finds a law enforcement member that even it is not willing to redeem. That’s how far Louisiana state trooper Kasha Domingue went off the rails in the incident leading to this lawsuit.
The ruling [PDF] also makes it clear Domingue had

I explained at length why that claim was grotesque and incorrect, in part because the subsidies in question weren’t even slated to arrive until next year.
Most of the press didn’t bother to dissect Musk’s gross and false claim about subsidies, instead portraying him in coverage as single-handedly saving

The FBI suffered another debacle on Friday when an Orlando jury returned a not guilty verdict for the widow of Omar Mateen, who killed 49 people and wounded 53 in his attack on Orlando’s Pulse nightclub in June 2016. The biggest terrorism case of the year collapsed largely thanks to FBI misconduct and deceit.

FBI Informant creates Kent State Massacre
MAY 4 1970
Terrence Brooks Norman (born April 30, 1949) was a Kent State University student allegedly involved in the Kent State shootings.
Norman was a junior at the University when soldiers from the Ohio National Guard killed four students and wounded others during a May 4, 1970 protest. Norman was present at the protest and was photographing the demonstrators for both the campus police and the FBI, a fact that was initially denied by both agencies but later confirmed.
After the shooting, Sylvester Del Corso, the Ohio National Guard’s top general, released a public statement claiming that Norman had admitted firing four shots at the demonstrators in self-defense. He later backed off from that statement.
Michael Kuzma, a local lawyer, filed a federal court lawsuit seeking the release of FBI documents related to the Kent State shooting and the people, known and unknown, behind it.
The suit, filed on the anniversary of the bloodshed, seeks documents related to former FBI informant Terry Norman, the Kent State student who was carrying a pistol that day.
The FBI has already released a significant amount of documents regarding the campus shooting, but Kuzma insists there may be more that needs to be unearthed. He thinks Norman, whom the FBI has acknowledged was an informant, is the key to filling in the gaps.
“Why did he have a gun?” Kuzma asked. “We want to know to what extent the FBI controlled his actions that day.”
