It's a tongue-in-cheek comment, because of the less formal nature of this thread. Here in the States "Freedom Isn't Free" is a jingoist battle-cry. But it's a strang sort of "freedom." I hear "freedom" and think "civil liberties," but most people in the states seem to think "buying a new car."

But Freedom isn't free.

Ah :)
Sorry friend, I really couldnt get what you tried to say (Im not a native english speaker, and now and then I do notice it ;) )

I know that phrase in the form "You are free - to do as we tell you".
(Ah, I didnt realize its from Bill Hicks, that sample is in some great techno or dnb piece, cant remember which)

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Bill_Hicks

About freedom not being free...Well my grandfather and his generation fought against Soviet Union and kept our country free - all other neighbours succumbed to soviet army. Before WW2 Germany and USSR had made a pact, where they agreed that Germany can take certain countries, and USSR would get Finland. They just didnt ask us...Our country of bit over 4 million held off USSR alone at first, and later we had to go to Germany for aid, since USSR was on the Allied side ;) Between a rock and a hard place..

Many of my relatives perished, tens of thousands needed to evacuate the lands taken by USSR, and after the war we were declared guilty of attacking USSR and had to pay large war reparations in the form of ships, trains, factories, products...

The war was started by USSR - with a classic false flag op. They fired at one of their villages, called Mainila, that was close to finnish border, with their own artillery, killed some folks, blamed Finland for it and attacked.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shelling_of_Mainila

History is the history of the winners.
Today we still have mandatory military service, I refused and did 13 months community service as punishment. I do know how to shoot guns and all that - but I will not ever give a pledge or vow to kill when told to do so, nor will I ever pledge allegiance to any country or authority. Thats why I couldnt serve.

My hero is Arnd Pekurinen (Freedom sure aint free, it can cost you your life!) -

For some people, their soul and freedom is more important than their own life.

thanks as always penguin,OE,nathan,IanEye-holy bejeebus i love this thread-i am stealing most of your images-try to stop me
love the roman images OE times a trillion! the photo of vader in the procession made me laugh-now i have a new image to hunt down-nathan-i am simply having no luck with your original request but will keep trying

i am becoming a committed marxist/leninist again-as i have stated before-communism under me (or i should say on top of) :D will be more fun than a barrelfull of monkeys. I am amending the 1976 soviet constitution in a few ways that will make it more user friendly-the politburo will have no less than 18 people in it-and i will institute the judet system that Romania had under Ceaucescu-but of course didnt work because of him. the gensek can only have one 7 year term(kind of a nod to france-except i hate sarkozy-they dont have term limits either i dont think
the politburo will be elected from the central committee -which will have at least 5000 people or more and will meet every 7 years on a national basis-the maximum number of years one can be in the polituro is 21-and can only have 14 years in the same position(except the previously mentioned gensek)-i am still deciding how to run state and local levels of office-i think the judet system or something like it will work well-of course the party needs to be much more responsive than past regimes to the needs of the proletariat (i do not consider china an actual communist state-but i admire them in some ways)
i have not decided where the capitol is going to be-may day is going to be very big in the states and i plan massive and fun filled parades
love to all of you boys and girls-will try to be back after stealing more pics-Z
your country was indeed incredibly tough penguin against an incredibly tough enemy!-i guess finns must be as tough as those damn nokias-me mum has dropped hers about 10-15 times on hard surfaces and not a dent and still works fine-i have a motorola which i like but the first and only time i dropped it the battery cover became loose-no biggy
like i say folks with me communism will indeed have a human face a la Dubcek-think of me as more like ana pauker or tito or kadar-but kinder
as all leaders have faults i have decided mine are going to be my bodyguards who are going to have other duties to attend to
i will accept the occassional gift from a foreign leader but plan to live like an ascetic-except for sex and pills and music and books-hehe oh well maybe more an exotic type leader- 'Devita'!
edit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ana_Pauker
please keep the roman pics coming oe!-i think i will steal vader for my place if u dont mind penguin-off to listen to tunes, amend my constitution. and find pics-nathans included-Z

sorry everyone utube was down-where i listen to most of my tunes-not mp3d and dont have many cds anymore so i came back with this-feeling very revolutionary tonight-i have had kind of a good day as a good looking guy held open a door for me and helped me to my car as he could see my back was hurting-didnt ask for his #-dont think he meant it sexually-sorry if that sounds horribly faggy-but i do like being treated like a grande dame-this is a pic of ana pauker getting a light from czech foreign minister vladimir clementis in belgrade-1948-i also love it when a man lights a smoke for me

i have tons of roman stuff in my folders. most of it probably comes from wiki commons. and/or it is there besides wherever i did find it.

the Beware of Dog is, I know, from the wiki Roman Mosaics page.

I use it all the time.
