FBI might shutdown the Internet on March 8

Millions of computer users across the world could be blocked off from the Internet as early as March 8 if the FBI follows through with plans to yank a series of servers originally installed to combat corruption.

Last year, authorities in Estonia apprehended six men believed responsible for creating a malicious computer script called the DNSChanger Trojan. Once set loose on the Web, the worm corrupted computers in upwards of 100 countries, including an estimated 500,000 in America alone. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation later stepped up by replacing the rogue Trojan with servers of their own in an attempt to remediate the damage, but the fix was only temporary. Now the FBI is expected to end use of those replacement servers as early as next month and, at that point, the Internet for millions could essentially be over.

When functioning as its creators intended, the DNSChanger Trojan infected computers and redirected users hoping to surf to certain websites to malicious ones. Traditionally, DNS, or Domain Name System, servers translate alphabetical, traditional website URLs to their actual, numeric counterpart in order to guide users across the World Wide Web. Once infected by the DNSChanger Trojan, however, websites entered into Internet browsers were hijacked to malicious servers and, in turn, directed the user to an unintended, fraudulent site.

In coordination with the arrests in Estonia, the FBI shut down the malicious DNSChanger botnet network, and, additionally, replaced them with surrogate servers to correct the problem. Those servers, however, were installed "just long enough for companies and home users to remove DNSChanger malware from their machines," according to the court order that established them. That deadline is March 8, and those surrogate servers are expected to be retired then. At that point, computers still infected with the Trojan will be essentially unable to navigate the Internet.

Who, exactly, will be affected? Security company IID (Internet Identity) believes that half of all Fortune 500 companies and more than two dozen major government entities in the US are still currently infected with the worm as of early 2012. Unless they take the proper steps to eradicate the Trojan from their systems, millions of users worldwide will be left hog-tied, helplessly attempting to navigate to nonexistent servers and, in effect, without the Web.

“At this rate, a lot of users are going to see their Internet break on March 8,” Rod Rasmussen, president and chief technology officer at Internet Identity, cautions Krebs On Security.

The FBI is getting in on the law enforcement app game on the heels of a controversial data mining project by the Homeland Security Department.

Documents recently posted on line seek industry input to develop the equivalent of a web alert system.

“I think what you are looking at is a Google news feed specifically targeted for law enforcement, focusing on their specific needs,” Frank Ciluffo, who leads George Washington University’s Homeland Security Policy Institute, told Fox News..“We’re on our mobile phones and we’re on our various iPhones, BlackBerrys and the like that transmits data that locates individuals.”

The 12-page document, called “FBI Social Media Application,” provides a detailed picture of the bureau’s specifications. The program must have the ability “to rapidly assemble critical open source information and intelligence … to quickly vet, identify, and geo-locate breaking events, incidents and emerging threats.”

Ciluffo, who was also a former adviser in the George W. Bush White House, said tracking social media is the tip of the spear for national security investigations and it raises privacy questions, over whether law enforcement officers are allowed to monitor public social media posts.

“If you’re in law enforcement’s shoes, and certainly if you’ve got a counterterrorism organization, I wouldn’t see why they should feel that anyone else can monitor but they can’t,” he said.

According to the ACLU, who reviewed the FBI documents for Fox News, information pulled from sites like Facebook, Twitter and blogs could be cross referenced with other databases to identify potential threats. Mike German, a former FBI agent who runs the National Security section of the civil liberties group, says the data could be used to increase video surveillance in a neighborhood. German argues fundamental issues are not being addressed.

What’s Going On With Michael Grimm?

In 2010, Michael Grimm, a Republican from Staten Island and former U.S. Marine and F.B.I. agent, was elected to Congress. Grimm ran largely on the strength of his history in law enforcement—he had served undercover in a large bust on Wall Street—and his experience, before and after the agency, in business. In the past year, however, his record on both fronts seems to have come undone.

Last April, in a story for The New Yorker about how the F.B.I. handles its confidential informants, I reported on Grimm’s work with a dubious C.I. and scam artist named Josef von Habsburg Lothringen. Grimm claimed not to remember the most dodgy aspects of the case. A portion of that story also described accusations made by a former N.Y.P.D. officer and other witnesses that Grimm, as an F.B.I. agent, had misused his authority by pulling his weapon and making racially charged statements in a night-club incident. Grimm denied the allegations, calling them “fiction.” (The N.Y.P.D. and the F.B.I. did not respond to requests for records connected to the incident, or to a public appeal from the N.Y.C. Public Advocate Bill de Blasio.)

I also reported that, during his campaign for Congress, Grimm was publicly chastised by the F.B.I. for improperly using Bureau imagery in his ads. An F.B.I. spokesperson later informed me that Grimm’s repeated contention that he was “the first undercover agent on Wall Street” was incorrect.

Those questionable claims are turning out to be the least of Grimm’s alleged transgressions. In late January, the New York Times published a report detailing accusations about the Congressman’s fundraising. The story alleged that Grimm raised over five hundred thousand dollars with the help of a man named Ofer Biton, an aide to a rabbi in Manhattan. Biton is now under investigation for embezzlement. The Times describes Grimm meeting the rabbi’s congregants near the F.B.I. office in Manhattan to collect donations, occasionally in cash, in amounts exceeding those allowed under campaign finance laws:

Within a week, the follower said, he gave Mr. Grimm a $5,000 check from a friend. Mr. Grimm then repeatedly called the follower and demanded another $10,000, the follower said.

“Every day, he used to call me, over and over,” the follower said.

The follower said he ignored the calls and did not give again.

A second follower recalled that Mr. Grimm came to his office in Manhattan to solicit a legal contribution. As he was handing over the check, the second follower said, Mr. Grimm confided in him that there were ways of working around the campaign rules.

Grimm denied only that he broke the law in his fund-raising. But today he landed on the Times again, this time on page A1. The deeply reported story digs into the Congressman’s checkered background in business, uncovering, among other damning facts, that:

Grimm has obscured a portion of his biography in which he worked for Whale Securities, a Wall Street firm which “ran into problems with regulators and customers.”

Grimm’s partner in a Texas real-estate development, a former F.B.I. agent himself, was under indictment for racketeering and fraud. He was convicted, and sentenced to twelve years in prison. Grimm later employed the same man again.

After opening a restaurant in Manhattan, Grimm was sued for cheating workers; that suit hasn’t been resolved. He had also failed to carry workman’s-compensation insurance.

Anonymous hackers claim hit on Ohio FBI partner website; replace homepage with rap video

LONDON — Hackers claiming allegiance to the loose-knit Anonymous
movement have claimed responsibility for vandalizing an Ohio FBI partner
website, replacing its homepage with the video for rap hit “Gangsta’s
Paradise.”

The hackers said Friday that they were responsible for defacing
the website of the Dayton, Ohio-based chapter of Infragard, a
public-private partnership for critical infrastructure protection
sponsored by the FBI.







The Ohio site was replaced with the video for Coolio’s 1995 rap
hit and a profane message attacking Infragard as a “sinister alliance”
between corporations and law enforcement.

MURFREESBORO — Rutherford County sheriff’s staff falsely advertised a controversial anti-terrorism training as being OK’d by the state’s POST Commission before commissioners had even met to decide.

The Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission met Feb. 17 and approved the training, which was held from Feb. 13-15 at World Outreach Church and was paid for by the conservative Tennessee Freedom Coalition, whose director has been an outspoken critic of plans by local Muslims to build a larger mosque here.

Virginia-based Strategic Engagement Group trained more than 100 officers from multiple agencies across the state. But the event drew fire from local Muslims and a national Muslim civil rights group because of the involvement of former FBI Agent John Guandolo, an SEG trainer, who recently told a Nashville audience that local mosques have no constitutional protections.

Shopping trip to U.S. turns into ordeal

It was supposed to be a cross-border shopping trip to New York State to break the monotony of a Quebec winter - a Montreal soccer dad, his wife, their adult son and their two youngest children packed in a car, headed toward Plattsburgh.

But when the Benaouda family got to the U.S. border, their outing turned into a scene from a bad movie - complete with shouting FBI agents, handcuffs, interrogation and six hours of unexplained detention.

The nightmare, which continues to replay in the Benaouda household, ended with a parting shot from a U.S. border official, warning that if they ever try to enter the United States again, they will get the same treatment.

More than a decade after 9/11, Muslim Canadian travellers with no proven links to terrorism continue to be targeted when they fly or try to cross into the U.S.

But why was Mohamed Benaouda, 56 - father of seven, Habs fan - forced from the family car by 10 or more U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at the Champlain, N.Y., border crossing on Jan. 22?

Benaouda, a Canadian citizen with Algerian roots who says he has never had any run-ins with the law, was handcuffed, photographed, fingerprinted, held in a cell and interrogated.

He was given no explanation for his detention.

His son, Bachir, 22, a finalyear aerospace technology student, and Mohamed's wife, Aid-Nadia, were also photographed and fingerprinted. The two children, 13 and 11, were spared.

But why was the travel ban imposed verbally by the border agent, leaving no paper trail to follow or to contest?

"If I was before a judge who judged me, I would accept that," Mohamed said.

"Why did my children suffer this atrocity? So they can have files on me, on my family? What's that about? It is an injustice."

A call to the Champlain border crossing was redirected to Rick Misztal, public affairs supervisor in the Customs and Border Protection's Buffalo office.

"No arrests were made," Misztal said. "No complaints have been filed. I have no other information whatsoever for you."

Misztal would not explain why Benaouda was singled out, before the Customs agent looked at his passport.

Asked what recourse the Benaouda family members have to get the travel ban lifted, Misztal suggested: "They should contact whoever stated that."

People refused entry to the U.S. may pay $545 US, nonrefundable, for a waiver or redress application that can take up to a year to process, according to Customs and Border Protection.

FBI Turns Off Thousands of GPS Devices After Supreme Court Ruling

The Supreme Court’s recent ruling overturning the warrantless use of GPS tracking devices has caused a “sea change” inside the U.S. Justice Department, according to FBI General Counsel Andrew Weissmann.

Mr. Weissmann, speaking at a University of San Francisco conference called “Big Brother in the 21st Century” on Friday, said that the court ruling prompted the FBI to turn off about 3,000 GPS tracking devices that were in use.

These devices were often stuck underneath cars to track the movements of the car owners. In U.S. v. Jones, the Supreme Court ruled that using a device to track a car owner without a search warrant violated the law.

After the ruling, the FBI had a problem collecting the devices that it had turned off, Mr. Weissmann said. In some cases, he said, the FBI sought court orders to obtain permission to turn the devices on briefly – only in order to locate and retrieve them.

Mr. Weissmann said that the FBI is now working to develop new guidelines for the use of GPS devices. He said the agency is also working on guidelines to cover the broader implications of the court decision beyond GPS devices.

But tipsters who follow Douglas’s advice could miss out on cash rewards that the government is willing to pay, whistleblower lawyer David K. Colapinto said.

“If they just go to the FBI, they are probably going to get zero,” Colapinto said. “The FBI’s not obligated to do anything for them.”

Anthony Weiner reported a New York Republican Congressman to the FBI for extortion before the sexting scandal that forced Weiner's resignation.

Staten Island Representative Michael Grimm allegedly tried to coerce a powerful New York rabbi into raising funds for him, according to reports passed from Weiner to the FBI.

Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, adviser to Israel’s powerful elite as well as sports stars such as LeBron James, told Weiner in October 2010 that he was strong-armed into asking his congregation to give funds to his election run.

Grimm had allegedly disclosed to Pinto that he was a former FBI agent and that he was a good person to have a friend not an enemy.

'The complaint at the time was that Grimm had mentioned that he was a former FBI agent and let the rabbi know, through his interpreter and staff, that he could help the congregation, or make life tougher for them, and that he was a good person to have as a friend, not an enemy,' a source told Roll Call

Doxed: how Sabu was outed by former Anons long before his arrest

When the FBI arrested LulzSec leader Hector "Sabu" Monsegur, they did so in a hurry—hours before the arrest, Sabu was doxed, his identity posted to the Internet. With his name public, federal agents feared that he would start destroying evidence to protect himself, so they ended their covert surveillance and moved in, according to Fox News.

Efforts to name and shame the LulzSec crew during its 50-day rampage were common. Many of these doxings were inaccurate, a result of faulty inferences or deliberate attempts to mislead on the part of the LulzSec hackers.

But not all were wrong. In fact, the game of doxing Sabu was over before it had even started. He was correctly doxed more than two months before his arrest—in fact, more than a month before LulzSec had even started publicly operating.

This first doxing happened after a group of former Anonymous members, displeased at the moralizing direction that Anonymous had taken and at Sabu's leadership role, decided to take action. Speaking to Gawker almost one year ago, the dissident group calling itself Backtrace Security announced that it was going to post chat transcripts and information about the identies of Anonymous members.

Several days later, it followed through on its promise, releasing IRC logs called "consequences.pdf" (MD5 checksum: a4084efa1713447d295919b4670769da) and a file called"namshub.pdf" (MD5 checksum: 042a645a1bf4cdfb433887424455234e) that showed a spreadsheet of online names, real names, locations, and other evidence about Anonymous members. (The files have now been pulled, allegedly at the "request of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.")

While at least some of the information in namshub.pdf is incorrect—subsequent arrests have established the real identities of Topiary and Kayla, and they don't match Backtrace's claims—one name stands out. Sabu is identified as "Hector Xavier Montsegur." This is slightly misspelled, but it's the right name nonetheless. The document also claimed, correctly, that Sabu lives on New York City's Lower East Side.

The PDFs garnered some attention at the time—they even resulted in Backtrace Security being doxed—but apparently not enough attention to force the FBI's hand.

Backtrace then decided to out Sabu again. Early in the evening of June 7, the day of Sabu's arrest, the Twitter account belonging to Backtrace Security wrote: "Hector Xavier Montsegur -aka Xavier de Leon - aka (Sabu)." The same misspelling, but the same correct name.
