Unsure. I kind of suspect the FBI got involved to cover it up and use that as leverage against MLK's former inner circle. They were brought in during the Earl Terrell(kid linked to first sex ring) investigation after someone made a bullshit phone call claiming they'd kidnapped him and taken him across state lines. After that the hunt for a solitary serial killer began.

It's one of those cases where you can get close enough to the truth to reach the outline of a conclusion. Beyond that, who knows. Blackmail is probably a pretty good bet given we know the FBI was investigating the UYAC at the time.

Two things I've encountered in most of these cases are Church groups used as mail order child porn fronts taking in donations, and juvenile rehabilitation programs being used to effectively gain custody of kids. This case has the makings of both.

Picked up a copy of Hand of Death. Very novelized with no way of separating what is intended to be fact from the fiction stitching those facts together into a narrative. The bizarre circumstances surrounding Henry Lucas lend credence to there being something there, but the book has that Christian outlook making it an easy target to misnomer as a product of the "Satanic Panic".
