Nazi and East German Propaganda: Major Archive

Postby slow_dazzle » Sun May 24, 2009 10:35 am

Cross posted from LATOC.

Here is a big archive of Nazi-era, and East German, propaganda material. Speeches by prominent figures, posters, artwork and other interesting stuff.

It might seem a tad morbid to post something like this. However, there is a lot to learn from studying the way public perception was managed under the two, different regimes, albeit both were totalitarian. And the way propaganda was used in the past, is often useful for analysing current events.

From the main page:

"Propaganda was central to Nazi Germany and the German Democratic Republic. The German Propaganda Archive includes both propaganda itself and material produced for the guidance of propagandists. The goal is to help people understand the two great totalitarian systems of the twentieth century by giving them access to the primary material."

Here is the main page and here is a section of the site to show how much material is available.

The section on Nazi ceremonies is interesting. The Nazis could be regarded as a cult, with all the familiar trappings of the same; Hitler fully understood the power of ritual. Nuremberg was essentially a massive ritual and there was a concerted campaign to indoctrinate youth, using ceremonies and ritualistic events.
On behalf of the future, I ask you of the past to leave us alone. You are not welcome among us. You have no sovereignty where we gather.
