The Waco Incident – 20 Years Later
Since this web site is all about police misconduct, we cannot let the twentieth anniversary of the Waco incident pass without comment.
April 19, 1993 marks the worst police action in modern American history. Here are the main things to know:
• 76 people, including 27 children, died that day. That loss of life is a sufficient explanation as to why this incident is important and worth remembering.
• The federal police operation did not involve a handful of “rogue” agents. The incident is disturbing because it supposedly involved the best units of the ATF and the FBI. And much of the decision-making was done by the top people at headquarters facilities in Washington, DC.
• Make no mistake, crimes were committed by federal agents at Waco. And those crimes were covered-up.
• If the feds can successfully cover-up the worst police action in modern American history–an event that was highly publicized and that eventually brought extensive congressional hearings and the appointment of a special prosecutor– it is frightening to consider what police agencies would be able to get away in instances where there is no media scrutiny or legislative oversight.
For those interested in the details, read this paper that we published in 2001 (I also recommend the documentary film, Waco: The Rules of Engagement, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 1997). For today, let me just highlight some facts for all the people who do not have the time or inclination to study the details.
• When the Branch Davidian residence burned to the ground and it became apparent that the FBI tank assault on April 19 backfired–resulting in almost everyone losing their lives, Attorney General Janet Reno told the media that the reason she ordered the assault was because “babies were being beaten” — so the feds had no choice–they just had to move in. About a week later, Reno testified before Congress. Under oath, she admitted she had no evidence that babies were being beaten! What!?
• The FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team kept saying they were there to save lives and that they were especially concerned about the safety of the children in the residence. But their tanks drove into the side of buildings even as the agents admitted they did not know the whereabouts of the children.
• Some of the Branch Davidians survived the inferno of April 19. They were arrested and charged with “murdering ATF agents.” In a stinging rebuke to the federal prosectors, the jury acquitted the Davidians of those very serious charges.
• One of the primary reasons the cover-up was successful was that government officials kept deflecting attention away from their actions to the Branch Davidian leader, David Koresh. And, later, the feds would deflect attention by pointing out the crimes of the Oklahoma City bombers. The feds seemed to taunt everyone with the question, “Who are you going to side with? Koresh? McVeigh and Nicols?” That was always a false choice. One can, for example, condemn excessive force against a shoplifter without “siding with” shoplifting.
• There are, to be sure, some wild conspiracy theories out there about the feds and Waco. But the existence of a conspiracy theorist(s) does not make all government conduct lawful and ethical, at least in logic.
What’s the takeaway from all this? First, recognize that this awful incident really did happen. Crimes were committed and then the government tried to deceive everyone about what actually happened there. Second, when it comes to government power, especially police power and the use of deadly force, be impartial, ask questions, and follow the evidence. We must remember that, in a free society, police agents may not use the “color of their office” to commit crimes.

3 Customer Acquisition Tactics You'll Learn At Connect '17 From An Ex-FBI Agent

I write about company building from the front lines of Silicon Valley

In a few weeks, I’ll be speaking at FullContact’s Connect ’17 conference with my friend Chris Voss. A decorated FBI veteran, the author of “Never Split the Difference,” and the founder of The Black Swan Group, Voss has a once-in-a-lifetime lecture planned for attending founders.
What is it? Well, you’ll have to attend the May 10-12 conference in Denver, Colorado, for the full story, but I’ll tell you this much: With the FBI’s hostage negotiation tactics in your back pocket, you’ll come away with a host of new customer acquisition ideas.
How, exactly, did Voss learn these techniques? After policing some of Kansas City’s toughest neighborhoods, Voss spent 24 years with the FBI, where he became the bureau’s leading kidnapping negotiator. Today, he’s a master of persuasion who helps people navigate everyday negotiations in their personal and professional lives.
A former FBI agent’s marketing playbook
Fortunately, Voss has agreed to share a few of those negotiation tips as a sneak peek of his presentation. He sees three primary ways salespeople and marketers can use them to improve their customer acquisition processes:
1. Don’t act without proof of life.
The FBI won’t bother negotiating with kidnappers unless they can provide proof that hostages are alive. Why? In short, it’s a waste of time. FBI agents first check for life without upsetting the negotiator-kidnapper power balance. Rather than say “Let me talk to the hostage,” one might ask for the hostage’s best friend’s name.
Apply a similar approach to targeting prospects. Don’t ask “Do you want to purchase this product?” First, discover whether a deal is possible. Is the customer actually facing the challenge you think he is? Solutions-based selling works only if you can address your prospect’s problem.
2. Get them to say, ‘That’s right.’
Negotiation is all about empathy. To successfully defuse a kidnapper, you have to show that you understand him. People tend to lower their defenses when they feel they’ve reached a point of agreement.
For example, in his book, Voss tells the story of a kidnapped Haitian boy. “You’re in Washington, D.C.,” the boy’s father told Voss on the phone. “How are you going to help me?” Thinking on his feet, Voss reminded the father that it was Thursday, and because the kidnappers liked to party on weekends, they wouldn’t kill his son. By showing an understanding of the situation and getting the father to say, “That’s right,” Voss elicited the father’s crucial cooperation and saved the boy.
In business, this tactic is particularly useful for price negotiations. “Why won’t you pay X price?” elicits a defensive response. “You feel X price is too high because of Y factor, right?” instead creates a point of rapport. With just a simple phrasing change, you can help a prospect see you as a partner, not an adversary.
3. Turn art and science from adversaries into allies.
In hostage negotiations, some of the work is science. Before ever hopping on the phone, the FBI analyzes kidnapping demographics, close contacts, recent travel, and more. When speaking with a kidnapper, however, there’s no substitute for artful, empathetic negotiation.

Grassley presses Comey on 'material inconsistencies' in Trump dossier inquiry

Published May 01, 2017
April 7, 2017: Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, arrives for a news conference just after the confirmation vote for President Donald Trump's high court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, on Capitol Hill in Washington. (AP)
A top senator is pushing FBI Director James Comey for information on the bureau's connections to a British ex-spy who authored an unsubstantiated dossier of claims about President Trump on behalf of an opposition research firm -- saying there are “material inconsistencies” between new documents and prior FBI accounts.
In a letter to Comey dated Monday, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, complained about a “startling lack of responsiveness” from the FBI on previous questions the committee had about its involvement with Christopher Steele, who wrote the dossier for Fusion GPS.
The dossier, which claimed the Russians had compromising information about Trump, was first circulated by Buzzfeed, but many news networks, including Fox News, have chosen not to report on the specifics of the

White House considers Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke for post in Homeland Security

April 28, 2017 | Updated 7:41 p.m. CT April 28, 2017

Officials in the President Donald Trump administration are considering Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. for a job with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Clarke is to be appointed as assistant secretary at the department's Office of Partnership and Engagement where he would coordinate outreach to state and local law enforcement agencies, Politico, an online news company, reported Friday. The position of assistant secretary does not require Senate confirmation.
On Friday, sources confirmed that news of the possible appointment is coming out now because Trump officials recently completed their background check of the sheriff. Trump staffers are a few steps away from making the appointment. One source said it could take more than a month to finish the process.
"It wouldn't be for a while," the source said. "Nothing's imminent."
Clarke has said in the past that it would be hard to turn down the president if he asks the sheriff to join the administration.
Sources close to the sheriff have said for months that Trump officials have been interested in appointing Clarke to serve as the administration's liaison to the law enforcement community. Those sources said if Clarke landed such a job, he would speak out on police-related matters.
On Friday, Clarke was in Atlanta speaking at a leadership conference for the National Rifle Association, a group that helped him win re-election in 2014. He did not respond immediately to requests for comment.
In his speech Friday, Clarke told the gun-rights activists: "You see, our fight for freedom continues in earnest," according to a report on The Washington Times website. "You see, these rat bastards on the left never give up."
"Election defeats don't matter to them," he said. They will continue "their assault on our Constitution, the rule of law, liberty and American exceptionalism."
Clarke, who campaigned across the country for Trump, was passed over for the cabinet-level job of heading the Department of Homeland Security. Trump picked retired Marine Gen. John F. Kelly to lead the agency.

The Department of Homeland Security was created in the wake of 9/11. The department's duties range from counter-terrorism to enforcing immigration laws.
This week, Kelly announced the creation of a new office of Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement Office within the department's Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The office was launched to support victims of crimes committed by "criminal aliens," Kelly said.
Friday was the fifth day of an inquest into the death of a Milwaukee County Jail inmate in April 2016. Terrill Thomas, 38, died of dehydration in a solitary confinement cell seven days after water to the cell was shut off.
His untreated bipolar disorder rendered him incapable of asking for help.

Clarke has not commented publicly about the details of the case.
On Wednesday, the Voces de la Frontera immigrants rights organization asked Gov. Scott Walker to remove Clarke from office because of the death of Thomas in the jail.
Representatives of the group said they delivered to Walker petitions with more than 10,000 signatures of Wisconsin residents urging the governor to use his authority under state law to remove county elected officials for "inefficiency, neglect of duty, official misconduct, or malfeasance in office."
Walker said he would not remove Clarke from the elected post and suggested voters should make that decision.

ICYMI: Former NSA Contractor Sues James Comey, Alleges Cover Up Of Spy Activities On Over 20 Million Americans
Matt Vespa Matt Vespa|Posted: Jun 20, 2017 3:05 PM Share (236)

Circa News has been covering the alleged abuses of the intelligence community against Americans. They noted how the unmasking protocol for intercepts collected by the National Security Agency changed under the Obama administration, supposedly to better catch terrorists prepping for lone wolf attacks, could open Americans up to political espionage. Then, they wrote about how the FBI may have illegally shared spy data on Americans with unauthorized parties who did not have clearance to view such information. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) wrote a ten-page ruling listing hundreds of privacy violations committed by the FBI when gathering information during the tenure of then-FBI Director James Comey. Now, a former NSA contractor has filed a lawsuit against James Comey, allegedly a covering up the illegal methods that are being used to monitor Americans and violate their constitutional privacy rights. Once again, John Solomon and Sara Carter were on the case.

The contractor Dennis Montgomery reportedly took multiple hard drives containing 600 million classified documents to prove how the intelligence community is violating Americans’ privacy. He was granted immunity, but the FBI never followed through. The FBI has documentation of them taking possession of the hard drives. Montgomery alleges that over 20 million Americans’ identities were illegally unmasked:

Here's Why the FBI Spied on black author James Baldwin
Baldwin once called Hoover "history’s most highly paid voyeur

Baldwin was part of the upsurge of writers and artists that were tied to the Black Liberation struggle.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation had a 1,884-page file on prominent writer and LGBTQ icon James Baldwin, collected between the 1960s and early 1970s.

RELATED:

It also collected documents on other writers, like a 110-page file on Truman Capote and 276 pages on Richard Wright. The size of the file apparently depended on activism and links to other radicals. Baldwin's file is half the size of Malcolm X, for instance.

Baldwin first piqued the FBI's interest in 1960 for being “connected with several Communist Party front groups,” among other reasons. But he was also targeted for his links to the Black liberation movement and his sexual orientation. Baldwin's 1963 polemic essay, "The Fire Next Time," became a manifesto of the Civil Rights Movement.

Baldwin’s bureau file was collected between 1958 and 1974 and is deemed as one of the most exhaustive and detailed accounts of the Black writer-activist. The FBI ghostreaders documented minute details such as his international travels, his sexual and political affinities, and his literary output, also noting the purchase of many of his titles for the FBI library.

Suit Seeks to Force Oversight of Chicago Police
BY DAN HINKEL ON JUN 15, 2017

CHICAGO — A federal lawsuit filed Wednesday by a host of civil rights lawyers and organizations seeks to force sweeping reforms in the troubled Chicago Police Department.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, is an attempt to force a form of oversight Mayor Rahm Emanuel backed away from earlier this month — federal court supervision of reforms in a department plagued by allegations of excessive force and misconduct.

About 15 lawyers from Chicago and New York filed the lawsuit on behalf of six African-American plaintiffs who allege excessive force and other abuses, as well as groups including Black Lives Matter Chicago.

The roughly 130-page lawsuit invokes police uses of force dating to the 1968 Democratic convention and the killing of Black Panther Fred Hampton in arguing that violence and racial discrimination remain structural features of the department to this day. The suit contends that police routinely beat, deploy Tasers on and shoot African-Americans and Latinos with the protection of a “code of silence” and little risk of discipline.

President Trump's nominee to become the next FBI director has billed New Jersey taxpayers $2.1 million while representing Governor Chris Christie in connection with the Bridgegate investigations.
WNYC and the Asbury Park Press report, based on records provided in response to public records requests, that Wray and his firm's near-secret legal work for Christie continued at least until late April, and may be ongoing. Christie has maintained his innocence throughout the federal investigation and the prosecutions that earned his high-ranking allies prison terms, even as those convicted said he was directly involved in the George Washington Bridge lane closures. The closures were meant as political retribution after the mayor of Fort Lee declined to endorse Christie.
Wray billed New Jersey taxpayers $340 an hour, and spent more than $14,000 on travel and meals, including one $1,963.40 plane ticket after the aides' trial ended last November, according to the reports.
Wray is a partner at the firm King & Spalding and has phone numbers at its offices in Washington, New York, and Atlanta. First-class, next-day, round-trip tickets from Atlanta to Newark currently start at $1,009, according to a Kayak search.

Sweden Aims to be Carbon Neutral by 2045; Largest Pension Fund Ditches Climate Bad Actors
In a stunning victory for clean energy and climate progress, Sweden this week overwhelmingly passed a law that fully commits the country to carbon neutrality by 2045. Meanwhile, Sweden’s largest pension fund has divested from corporations it identifies as violators of the Paris Climate Accord. As a wise person recently said (see featured comment below) — this is “what real climate leadership looks like.”

Beating a Fast Path to Net Zero Emissions

Sweden’s most recent climate law, which flew through the Parliament by a 254 to 41 margin, aims to have the country producing net zero carbon emissions in less than three decades. This new measure moves the date for Sweden’s carbon neutrality forward by 5 years from 2050 to 2045.

Already a climate leader, Sweden presently gets about 85 percent of its electricity from hydropower, wind and nuclear energy. Across all sectors of its economy, Sweden has achieved the goal of 50 percent renewable energy fully 8 years ahead of schedule. The new measure doubles down on this already-powerful trend by further trimming carbon-based electrical generation while shifting larger focus to carbon emissions cuts from the transportation sector.

(Swedish electrical generation is dominated by hydro, nuclear, and wind power. Sweden aims to remove fossil fuels from electrical power generation while shifting transportation to EVs and biofuels by 2045. Image source: Electricity Production in Sweden.)

In order to achieve carbon neutrality, Sweden is pushing hard for rapid electrical vehicle adoption, switching remaining liquid fuels to biofuels, and to completely phase out its ever-dwindling margin of fossil fuel power generation. The result of these policies would be a country that primarily runs on renewable and nuclear power generation and that uses EVs and other alternative fuel vehicles for motorized transportation. Ultimately, Sweden aims to cut its presently low carbon emissions by a further 85 percent all while planting trees and developing carbon sinks to offset the rest by 2045.

Divesting From Climate Bad Actors

In a related move, Sweden’s largest pension fund, which manages the pensions of 3.5 million Swedish citizens, decided to divest money from various climate bad actors. The fund, AP 7, announced last week that it would pull investments from six corporations that it identified as being engaged in various violations of the Paris Climate Summit. These companies included: ExxonMobil, Westar, Southern Corp, and Entergy for fighting against climate legislation in the United States, Gazprom for oil exploration in the vulnerable Arctic, and TransCanada for building pipelines across North America despite widespread local opposition and obvious long-term climate impacts.

They can follow self-driving cars all day but won’t be able to pull them over. Because the power to make pretextual stops requires a traffic violation, we may see a sea change of enforcement away from traffic enforcement.” Some utopian-minded otaku has fanatsies that they’ll finally leave us alone, someday.

More Than 100 Federal Agencies Fail to Report Hate Crimes to the FBI’s National Database

The Senate Judiciary Committee is also investigating whether the FBI has wrongly relied on the anti-Trump dossier and its author, Christopher Steele — the old spy who was hired by Fusion GPS to build a Russia file on Trump — to aid its ongoing espionage investigation into the Trump campaign and its possible ties to Moscow.

The FBI received a copy of the Democrat-funded dossier in August, during the heat of the campaign, and is said to have contracted in October to pay Steele $50,000 to help corroborate the dirt on Trump — a relationship that “raises substantial questions about the independence” of the bureau in investigating Trump, warned Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa.

Senate investigators are demanding to see records of communications between Fusion GPS and the FBI and the Justice Department, including any contacts with former Attorney General Loretta Lynch, now under congressional investigation for possibly obstructing the Hillary Clinton email probe, and deputy FBI director Andrew McCabe, who is under investigation by the Senate and the Justice inspector general for failing to recuse himself despite financial and political connections to the Clinton campaign through his Democrat activist wife. Senate investigators have singled out McCabe as the FBI official who negotiated with Steele.

Like Fusion GPS, the FBI has failed to cooperate with congressional investigators seeking documents.

Justice Department, FBI seem at odds over budget

By JOSH GERSTEIN 06/23/2017 07:36 PM EDT
The firing of FBI Director James Comey isn’t the only thing top Justice Department officials and FBI leaders disagree about at the moment.

They also don’t see eye to eye about something else always of great import in Washington: money.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe have presented starkly different views to Congress about how President Donald Trump’s budget would impact the FBI’s operations.

To hear McCabe describe it, Trump’s budget would require significant belt-tightening across the law enforcement agency.

“It will certainly impact us in many ways. It is a broad and deep reduction that will touch every program. it will touch headquarters. It will touch our field offices,” McCabe told a House Appropriations subcommittee Wednesday. “It is a reduction that is not possible to take entirely against vacancies. It’s a reduction that will touch every description of employee

FBI goes after Bernie Sanders

Burlington College: Jane Sanders lawyers up in legal probe

Posted Friday, June 23, 2017 7:15 pm
By Morgan True, VTDigger
BURLINGTON — Jane Sanders has hired attorneys to represent her in a Justice Department probe of a land deal she orchestrated while president of the now-defunct Burlington College.

A former college employee who coordinated the school's response to an FBI subpoena in February 2016 said she was contacted by two attorneys representing Jane Sanders shortly after VTDigger broke the news confirming the federal probe in late April.

Coralee Holm, the former dean of operations and advancement for Burlington College, said the attorneys wanted information about "what I had been asked by the FBI."

"They were trying to get clarification on what the accusations are because they had not been contacted by anybody as to an investigation," Holm said.

Two former Burlington College trustees said they were also contacted by attorneys representing Sanders, wife of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.

Holm said she got a call from the office of prominent Burlington attorney Rich Cassidy in late April or early May.

Jane Sanders did not immediately return a call requesting comment for this report and has refused VTDigger's repeated requests for an interview about Burlington College since late 2015.

Cassidy also did not return a call Thursday requesting comment.

Holm said she was contacted in late May by Jennifer Windom, a partner in the Washington, D.C., firm Robbins, Russell, Englert, Orseck, Untereiner & Sauber. Windom's questions were similar to those from Cassidy's office, asking Holm to outline her understanding of the allegations against Sanders.

One of the principals of the firm, Larry Robbins, represented Scooter Libby, a former aide to vice president Dick Cheney, who was convicted of lying and obstructing a leak investigation.

Holm said that after asking for more information, she declined to answer questions from either attorney.

Windom could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday. The bio on her firm's website says she's a trial attorney who specializes in "complex civil litigation and government investigations and enforcement actions."

As president of Burlington College in 2010, Sanders secured a $6.7 million loan from People's United Bank, which the college used to purchase a 33-acre lakefront campus for the school.

Federal investigators are probing aspects of that land deal, according to Holm and another former employee who said they had been contacted by the FBI. Federal officials have declined to comment on the investigation.

The loan agreement required the college to provide evidence of more than $2 million in pledged donations as collateral. However, three donors — including the largest, listed at $1 million — have told VTDigger their pledges were misrepresented in the loan documents.

Between 2010 and 2014 the college collected only $676,000 in donations, according to former college officials. The school was also never able to increase enrollment as Sanders had projected. It closed in May 2016, with officials citing debt from the land purchase as the primary reason.

Holm has said that when the FBI subpoenaed the school last year, an agent asked her for records relating to a list of donors in a spreadsheet the agent provided her, as well as communications from when Sanders was president. Holm said she gave the agent paper and digital records.

Emails obtained by VTDigger through a public records request show an FBI agent and the assistant U.S. attorney for Vermont who leads the criminal division were reviewing Burlington College records in the state's possession as recently as February.

A woman listed as a $1 million pledged donor in the loan document that Sanders signed said she was interviewed by an investigator with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. in April.

Yves Bradley, chair of the recently dissolved Burlington College board of trustees, said Thursday that he was contacted a month ago by Cassidy's assistant, who made it clear Cassidy was representing Sanders.

Bradley said he didn't find out specifically what Cassidy hoped to discuss, because he declined the meeting on the advice of an attorney representing the board.

Jonathan Leopold, who chaired the Burlington College board of trustees finance committee when the land deal was inked — and when Sanders was forced out 10 months later — said he too was contacted by a lawyer representing her.

"We talked about my recollection of Burlington College finances. That's really all I want to comment about," Leopold said. He refused to provide further detail about the discussion.

Leopold said the conversation took place about a month and a half ago, and he did not recall the attorney's name. Leopold said he was not familiar with the attorney who called on Sanders' behalf, but he said it was not Cassidy.

Leopold served in Bernie Sanders' mayoral administration in Burlington in the 1980s and later the administration of former Mayor Bob Kiss.

A young girl from Utah who made the decision to reveal she's gay to her Mormon church had her microphone cut off during her coming-out speech.

In video posted online, 12-year-old Savannah, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, addresses the congregation to come out as a lesbian.

"I believe that I am a child of heavenly parents," her speech begins. "I believe I was made the way I am, all parts of me, by my heavenly parents."

"They did not mess up when they gave me brown eyes or that I was born bald," Savannah tells the room full of people. "They did not mess up when they gave me freckles or when they made me to be gay. God loves me just this way."

As Savannah shared her dreams of meeting a partner, getting married and having children, her microphone abruptly goes silent.

In the footage, she's seen speaking to a church leader before walking away from the podium.

It's not clear what was said to Savannah or why her microphone stopped working, but her mother told CNN that her daughter was upset and crying when she came back to her seat.

Scripps scientists publish how they made H7N9 virus more transmissible
In 2014, a moratorium was placed on federally funded research which involved making flu viruses more lethal. The moratorium was placed after heated debate generated by research published by a Netherlands team, headed up by Ron Fouchier. Fouchier’s research had produced a strain of H5N1 which was able to go airborne, thus greatly enhancing its ability to spread. Fouchier focused on the transmission of the disease among ferrets, which are the lab stand-in for people.

Now, scientists in California have published research concerning enabling the human-to-human transmission of the bird flu virus H7N9. This virus strain is of concern to scientists as it has already infected 1500 people and killed 40% of them. H7N9 has not been known, however, to spread easily from human contact.

The article explaining the three genetic changes which need to be made to transform H7N9 into a virtual pandemic agent was published on June 15, 2017 in the journal PLOS Pathogens.

According to Scripps biologist Jim Paulsen, as quoted in an NPR article, “As scientists we’re interested in how the virus works…. We’re trying to just understand the virus so that we can be prepared.”

The NPR article quotes Paulsen as stating he wants next to test the mutated strain on ferrets.

Reuters reported on a number of scientists who were enthusiastic about the Scripps findings. Reuters quoted immunology expert Fiona Culley, who stated that “This study will help us to monitor the risk posed by bird flu in a more informed way, and increasing our knowledge of which changes in bird flu viruses could be potentially dangerous will be very useful in surveillance.”

Reuters also quoted virologist Wendy Barclay. “These studies keep H7N9 virus high on the list of viruses we should be concerned about,” she said. “The more people infected, the higher the chance that the lethal combination of mutations could occur.”

Not all the scientists interviewed were happy about the research. When posed with the question of scientists making the genetic changes in the actual H7N9 virus, David Relman, a Stanford professor of microbiology and immunology, was quoted by NPR as stating, “I would be very hesitant, were they to want to do that. In fact, I would be reluctant to have them do that.”

What are the chances that this research may be used for nefarious purposes?

Since 2001, the US government has poured over $100 billion dollars into what was initially called “Biodefense” but has euphemistically been renamed “Health Security.” Many of these programs are dual-use; that is to say the research can be used for either protection or weaponization. Scientists argue that it is necessary to first create the weapon (in this case a pandemic agent) in order to research the cure.

However, the US’s record of straightforwardness surrounding her “Biodefense” or “Health Security” programs has been abysmal. The limp-wristed investigation into the anthrax mailings of 2001, in which federal investigators neglected or refused to consider any lab but Fort Detrick as the locus for mailing the anthrax spores — which killed five and sickened over a dozen — resulted in the probable culprit at US Army’s Dugway Proving Ground getting a “Get out of Jail Free” card.

It was less than two years ago when Dugway was caught sending live anthrax through the mail to labs, worldwide. Initially, it was thought that nine labs received the live anthrax. The number soon expanded and it was ultimately admitted that 575 separate shipments of live anthrax had gone out in the span of a decade.

The official excuse, “We didn’t know our deactivating equipment wasn’t working!” was suspect, given numerous earlier reports that the equipment was faulty.

It has also come to light that the US has been leading the UN around by its virtual nose and providing false information both to the Biological Weapons Convention and also to the 1540 Committee concerning its “Biodefense” programs.

The reality is that the sort of research that delves into how to make H7N9 spread easily and efficiently among humans is the kind of research that should raise substantial alarm. According to sources in the US government, the moratorium on publishing this type of research is soon to be lifted. Shortly, anyone with two specimen vials to rub together may very well be able to surf the Web and learn how to create a worldwide plague. And in our current technocracy, with its worship of science as an inherent good, there just doesn’t seem to be much concern about this.

In 1998, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said,“Iraq is a long way from [America], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risk that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face. And it is a threat against which we must and will stand firm.”

We never found those weapons in Iraq. In our zeal to protect ourselves from bogeymen and “rogue states,” we may well have become the very threat that we feared.

“Natural Causes Killed Victor: A Death in Solitary,” a folk opera by George Swanson (DVD, 55 minutes)
Loaded on JAN. 10, 2017 by Lance Tapley published in Prison Legal News January, 2017, page 16
Filed under: Commentary/Reviews, Reviews, Immigration, Control Units, Tapes/Music. Location: Maine.
Written by George Swanson, a folksinger and Episcopal priest, this unusual folk opera tells how Victor Valdez, a sickly, working-class immigrant from the Dominican Republic, died in 2009 in solitary confinement at the Maine State Prison – and how the causes of his death were covered up.

The state prosecutor who investigated the case determined that Victor died of “natural causes.” True, he needed kidney dialysis and had other ailments, but a number of other prisoners said he had not been given proper medical care and had been physically abused. In fact, one prisoner had predicted to an advocate that the abuse would likely kill Victor.

I wrote the newspaper article, “A Prison Obituary: The Tragedy of Victor Valdez,” which was the basis for the opera. George Swanson has long worked with me and many others in a campaign to end or restrict the use of solitary in Maine and nationally. He successfully convinced the National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT) to take on the issue.

NRCAT’s founding director, the Rev. Richard Killmer, said the opera “shows the immorality of solitary confinement.” Bonnie Kerness, director of the American Friends Service Committee’s Prison Watch, called it an “amazing” production.

DID THE FBI RETALIATE AGAINST MICHAEL FLYNN BY LAUNCHING RUSSIA PROBE?
SECRET MEMOS SHOW TRUMP ADVISER ROILED BUREAU BY INTERVENING IN AGENT’S DISCRIMINATION CASE BEFORE HE WAS TARGETED IN RUSSIA CASE.

The FBI launched a criminal probe against former Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn two years after the retired Army general roiled the bureau’s leadership by intervening on behalf of a decorated counterterrorism agent who accused now-Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe and other top officials of sexual discrimination, according to documents and interviews.

Flynn’s intervention on behalf of Supervisory Special Agent Robyn Gritz was highly unusual, and included a letter in 2014 on his official Pentagon stationary, a public interview in 2015 supporting Gritz’s case and an offer to testify on her behalf. His offer put him as a hostile witness in a case against McCabe, who was soaring through the bureau’s leadership ranks.

The FBI sought to block Flynn’s support for the agent, asking a federal administrative law judge in May 2014 to keep Flynn and others from becoming a witness in her Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) case, memos obtained by Circa show. Two years later, the FBI opened its inquiry of Flynn.

The EEOC case, which is still pending, was serious enough to require McCabe to submit to a sworn statement to investigators, the documents show.

The deputy director’s testimony provided some of the strongest evidence in the case of possible retaliation, because he admitted the FBI opened an internal investigation into Gritz’s personal conduct after learning the agent “had filed or intended to file” a sex discrimination complaint against her supervisors.

McCabe eventually became the bureau’s No. 2 executive and emerged as a central player in the FBI’s Russia election tampering investigation, putting him in a position to impact the criminal inquiry against Flynn.

Three FBI employees told Circa they personally witnessed McCabe make disparaging remarks about Flynn before and during the time the retired Army general emerged as a figure in the Russia case.

The bureau employees, who spoke only on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution, said they did not know the reason for McCabe’s displeasure with Flynn, but that it made them uncomfortable as the Russia probe began to unfold and pressure built to investigate Flynn. One employee even consulted a private lawyer.

“As far as the troops in the field, the vast-majority were disgusted with the Russia decision, but that was McCabe driving the result that eventually led [former FBI Director James] Comey to make the decision,” said a senior federal law enforcement official, with direct knowledge of the investigation.

Read the whole thing. The rot appears to be deep set in both the FBI and the DOJ.

(GLOBALINTELHUB.COM) – 6/26/2017 — Drugs have been a part of human society forever – however far back you go, humans have used drugs in one form or another; medicine, recreation, spirituality (Shamans of simple tribes often ate psychedelics). In the world today there is an interesting schism between the puritan “America” and “Europe” about this issue – in Europe they consider drug addiction a health issue, and in places like Switzerland you can literally get strong narcotics like heroin from the Government. In America it’s the opposite, there is an exploding prison population for small non-violent offenses. But as with many things in America there are lots of ironies and hypocrisies, America also has the highest per capita rate of users of legal pharmaceuticals ‘drugs’ – and is one of the only countries in the world where drug companies are allowed to advertise on TV (In Europe you won’t see commercials for Prozac, Viagra, or other questionably useful drugs).

As the CIA represents the main head of the octopus that controls America’s society on behalf of their Illuminati owners, it is only fitting that the CIA has its hand in the international drug trade. It is also an interesting side note that since its early days the CIA has been interested in drugs for the use of interrogation, mind control, crowd control, and other purposes. In fact there have been suggestions based on circumstantial evidence that the entire ‘hippie’ movement came straight out of a CIA drug lab vis a vis Tim Leary and other affiliated icons.

The inspiration of this article is the book and legend of Gary Webb, the book is Dark Alliance – a must read for any trader or investor. Here’s a real blueprint how groups like the CIA manipulate markets. While the story of Dark Alliance which was originally published in a small California regional newspaper the San Jose Mercury News, this story has been re-published in nearly every major news source there is ranging from the NYTimes, Washington Post, LA Times, hundreds of foreign newspapers, etc.. The book is a great example of how to properly research a topic where its difficult to find information (in this case, because most of the CIA involvement was ‘secret’ and thus information was classified or destroyed, mostly). In trading, information is also difficult to find – analysts can learn a great deal from reading this book and understanding how one investigative journalist broke open the biggest secret the CIA had in its closet of deep secrets: The CIA was managing the international drug trade. The book concludes with the impeccable logic of the agency and how they could be involved in such dastardly deeds. When the topic was officially investigated it was discovered that the CIA had a secret legal agreement with the Department of Justice (DOJ) stating that through the CIAs business of spying, it was not their obligation to report illegal activities they witnessed to the DOJ (such as drug trafficking) as it may compromise their intelligence gathering. And lo and behold, most of the CIAs international assets happened to be major drug kingpins like Manuel Noriega. So based on this understanding, no employee of the CIA ever directly brought drugs into the USA, and likely never touched the operation directly. It was CIAs job to provide logistic support, planes, pilots, operational instructions, airfields, needed gear, and most importantly – protection from prosecution in USA due to ‘national security.’ And there were side benefits to this operation. They got to redirect funds from Central and South American cocaine to the fledgling contra revolution in Nicaragua which the US Congress didn’t want to continue funding. They got to destroy the black community in South Central Los Angeles with the crack explosion (not only by health, but by using it as a tool to pass draconian laws). They also could easily use the information on the drug trade to go after their enemies in Central America. It seemed to be a win-win-win for USA. And according to this secret agreement with DOJ it was all legal!

Before continuing, let’s un-muddy the waters about key points on this issue. An investigation found that no CIA employee was found bringing illicit narcotics into USA. That’s probably true. In “Dark Alliance” there is no suggestion that the CIA itself was bringing drugs into the country. The drug kingpins such as Norwin Meneses, Danilo Blandon, and others – were simply protected as ‘assets’ – the CIA not only looked the other way, they stopped other US Government investigators from uncovering anything substantial. Several instances where the drug operations were discovered by DEA, FBI, and others – turned into a situation where they were instructed to cease the investigation and if they did not, the individual was targeted.

So how is all this connected to the markets? The CIA is a fairly large organization, 20,000 employees working in the US and in practically every country in the world. Their operations are vast, just to name a few not commonly known but public CIA operations, they are active angel and seed investors in Silicon Valley and have even created a budding DC based VC community that develops technology with primarily intelligence and military applications (such as face recognition). The most absurd example of a CIA project was when they hired psychologist BF Skinner to train pigeons to aid in missile guidance systems:

One of the most seemingly preposterous military programs of all time occurred during WWII, when famed behavioral psychologist B.F. Skinner was enlisted by the government to try and train pigeons for use in a missile guidance system. At the time, Skinner was known as one of the major practitioners of operant conditioning, a system that used reward and punishment as a means of controlling behavior. With these ideas in mind, Skinner placed a series of specially trained pigeons inside missiles. A camera on the front of the missile recorded its flight path, which was then projected on a screen for the pigeon to see. The birds were trained to recognize the missile’s intended target, and they would peck at the screen if it was drifting off course. This information was fed to the weapon’s flight controls, which would then be changed to reflect the new coordinates. Skinner was originally given $25,000 to get the project up and running, and he actually managed to make some minor progress with it. But government officials were never quite able to get past the obvious absurdity of the program, and it was eventually shut down. .. and another one “Acoustic Kitty”

Most people wouldn’t think of the common house cat as being a potential master of espionage, but the CIA sure did. In the 1960s, American intelligence is said to have spent over $20 million on “Acoustic Kitty,” a top-secret project that used cats as recording devices. The project took a group of specially trained cats and surgically implanted microphones, antennae and batteries into their tails, and then set them loose near the Russian embassy. The idea was that an unassuming cat would be able to stride right up to groups of communist officials and listen in on their conversation, which it could then beam back to agents with its sophisticated radio equipment. The plan was eventually put into action, but the first cat sent into the field was supposedly run over by a taxi before it could make a recording, and operation ‘Acoustic Kitty” was abandoned shortly thereafter.
Why did we use this ridiculous example? Because it is a known project, that the CIA was using Pigeons to guide missiles – it’s not so hard to believe they provided drug traffickers with the logistic and legal support needed to bring Cocaine into USA (and many other activities). For more absurd CIA programs see this article.

But the primary role of the CIA, is that of intelligence gathering and analysis which puts them right in the middle of the information war – and the battlefield is the financial markets. As we explain in our book Splitting Pennies Understanding Forex – the only thing that backs the US Dollar are bombs. Basically, the US Military, and in this case the CIA primarily, protects the US Dollar globally. If you look at any foreign CIA operation it’s all about one thing: money. Cuba became an enemy only after the communist government nationalized US owned businesses there (effectively, seized). You can literally overlay a global map of CIA activity which is negatively correlated with Coca Cola and McDonald’s sales (which are all denominated in US Dollars). And by the way, that is the connection to the CIA and FX – wherever there’s a foreign market, there is the CIA. They fight for market domination of the US Dollar (and the US corporations and culture that comes with it) no different than a major US corporation competes for market share. But their ‘client’ is one single entity: The US Government (and US Citizens, but rich ones). They are protecting capitalism at the front lines – fighting communism while making a few dollars along the way – what could be more American than that? They use the same playbook as they’ve developed internally for most of their operations – thus, by understanding the Contra-Cocaine operation one can understand any operation. They aren’t really so different.

Here’s a document that shows how the CIA has been supporting the US Dollar, regarding Gold markets (bear in mind, this document is dated 1970, one year before Nixon created the free floating FX regime we use today, which means the US Dollar was pegged to Gold). CIA support of US Dollar and USD interests is implied; that’s at the core of what they do – it is their doctrine. Intelligence gathering, is the tactical level and Communism, and other threats to the USD global hegemony are strategies. And relatively speaking, they do a good job. The USD has never been used so widely around the world, the US stock market has enjoyed a bull run never seen before in history. All the crap in the news and investigations into their drug operations are really an irrelevant side issue – what the CIA was created for, they succeed.

Probably, let’s hope this is not the case, probably – there wasn’t a CIA plot to bring Cocaine into America and turn it into crack and flood the black community. These were all convenient circumstances to achieve what they wanted operationally – fund a covert war and at the same time make a little money and use the issue to ruin their local enemies. Central America has few natural resources to speak of without sophisticated mining and/or manufacturing operations to tap them; in other words, there isn’t any ‘oil’ to exploit, as in the middle east. The one thing that is easy to grow and is more valuable than any other naturally growing substance, is Coca (when refined into Cocaine). And as explained in the book, before it was realized that it could be turned into crack – Cocaine was the habit of the Elite themselves, due to price and the fact that you could literally continue working while you were high on the powder (such as Wall St. traders during the trading session). So while it seems extreme, and the crack epidemic of Los Angeles is clearly a huge social problem – it isn’t really surprising that the CIA was involved in such profitable business. Similar circumstantial evidence suggests that a similar operation was run in Afghanistan, a land where the Poppy plant grows wild. George H.W. Bush’s CIA nickname was George “Poppy” Bush. Like “Grandpappy” right? In the book Gary Webb claims that Pablo Escobar had a photo of “Poppy” standing in front of a huge pile of cash and cocaine, but the photograph never surfaced and he was killed shortly after making this statement about the photograph (it may be another funny coincidence).

In conclusion – this book is a must read for any trader or investor: Dark Alliance. Also it’s a must read for any lawyer – as this is a unique situation where you have a hidden hand protecting defendants in Federal cases with ‘national security’ – silencing witnesses (with gag orders) and other mechanisms not common in district courts.

Canada Becomes First Western Country To Legalize Bestiality-Vaccinate Them-Fluoridate Them And Provide Animals For Comfort-Oh Canada!
Posted on June 25, 2017
Canada legalizes bestiality
Having sex with animals is now legal in Canada, according to an astonishing new ruling by the Canadian Supreme Court.

According to the law on bestiality – citizens are now permitted to have sexual relations with animals as long as there is no penetration involved.

Independent.co.uk reports: The determination stemmed from a case involving a British Columbia man convicted of 13 counts sexually assaulting his stepdaughters – including one count of bestiality. But the man, identified only as “DLW”, was acquitted of the bestiality count with the new ruling.

DLW’s attorneys argued that bestiality linked to “buggery” – or sodomy – with animals beginning with an 1892 criminal code. Bestiality was first used in a 1955 code, but still was not defined to encompass every sex act with animals.

“Although bestiality was often subsumed in terms such as sodomy or buggery, penetration was the essence – ‘the defining act’ – of the offence,” the court said.

Thus, the court ruled by a 7–1 majority that bestiality required penetration.

“There is no hint in any of the parliamentary record that any substantive change to the elements of the offence of bestiality was intended,” the ruling reads.

According to court record DLW smeared peanut butter on the genitals of his victims and had the family dog lick it off while he videotaped the act.

Court documents disclose that DLW attempted to have the dog perform intercourse on the stepdaughter, but that ultimately failed.

DLW is serving a 16 year prison sentence. He brought the bestitality conviction to the court on appeal.

Justice Rosalie Abella was the lone dissenter, and had suggested that the court deny the appeal.

“Acts with animals that have a sexual purpose are inherently exploitative whether or not penetration occurs,” she wrote.

Representatives for Animal Justice, who brought the case to the Supreme Court, said the ruling should encourage Parliament to act on changing “outdated” laws that fail to protect the country’s animals.

“As of today, Canadian law gives animal abusers license to use animals for their own sexual gratification,” executive director of Animal Justice Camille Labchuk told The Independent via emailed statement. “This is completely unacceptable, contrary to societal expectations, and cannot be allowed to continue.”

Animal Justice implored Parliament to pass the Modernizing Animal Protections Act.

“This much-needed bill updates the animal offences in the Criminal Code,” Ms Labchuk added, “and closes this dangerous loophole to make it crystal clear that all forms of sexual activity between a person and an animal are unacceptable.”

Mary Powers was a friend

Mary D. Powers, dead at 93, called for police accountability
CHICAGO 06/28/2016,

Through many Chicago mayors, police superintendents and commanders, Mary Powers called for improved police accountability.

Mrs. Powers, who worked for decades for the watchdog group she helped found, Citizens Alert, died Saturday at 93 at Evanston Hospital, according to her family.

In 1965, she worked to bring Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to Winnetka, where he made a fair-housing speech on the village green.

In 1969, while touring the building where Black Panthers leaders Fred Hampton and Mark Clark were killed during a police raid, Mrs. Powers confirmed that all the bullet holes — except one — appeared to have been fired from outside, a revelation first reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. She joined the chorus rejecting the official story that it was a shootout.

In 1991, she called for action against Chicago police Cmdr. Jon Burge, who had been linked to extracting confessions via torture by John Conroy in the Chicago Reader. Nearly 20 years later, she attended Burge’s trial, where he was convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice.

In 2006, in a letter co-written to the Sun-Times, she called for an independent civilian review board to replace the police Office of Professional Standards.

“Taxpayers’ money has been thrown down the drain for years to disguise the stench of brutality and degrading behavior on the part of abusive cops,” she said, “while uninvolved professional officers are subjected to undeserved hostility and resistance and the reputation of our city is tarnished.”

A longtime resident of Winnetka, Mrs. Powers rejected reporters’ descriptions of her as a gray-haired suburban matron. “It’s a distraction,” she said, “from the issues.”
“She was just a wonderful soldier in the struggle for justice,” said Peoples Law Office attorney Flint Taylor. “She was not only there in court and on the streets but meeting with superintendents.”

Drugs
Religious leaders get high on magic mushrooms ingredient – for science

Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore enlists priests, rabbis and a Buddhist to test the effects of psychedelic drugs on religious experience
The experiment aims to assess whether a transcendental experience alters the participants’ religious thinking.

Saturday 8 July 2017 02.30 EDT Last modified on Saturday 8 July 2017 02.31 EDT

A Catholic priest, a Rabbi and a Buddhist walk into a bar and order some magic mushrooms. It may sound like the first line of a bad joke, but this scenario is playing out in one of the first scientific investigations into the effects of psychedelic drugs on religious experience – albeit in a laboratory rather than a bar.

Scientists at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore have enlisted two dozen religious leaders from a wide range of denominations, to participate in a study in which they will be given two powerful doses of psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms.

Dr William Richards, a psychologist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland who is involved in the work, said: “With psilocybin these profound mystical experiences are quite common. It seemed like a no-brainer that they might be of interest, if not valuable, to clergy.”

The experiment, which is currently under way, aims to assess whether a transcendental experience makes the leaders more effective and confident in their work and how it alters their religious thinking.

Despite most organised religions frowning on the use of illicit substances, Catholic, Orthodox and Presbyterian priests, a Zen Buddhist and several rabbis were recruited. The team has yet to persuade a Muslim imam or Hindu priest to take part, but “just about all the other bases are covered,” according to Richards.

After preliminary screening, including medical and psychological tests, the participants have been given two powerful doses of psilocybin in two sessions, one month apart.

The sessions will be conducted in a living room-like setting at New York University and Johns Hopkins in Baltimore with two “guides” present. The participants will be given the drug and then spend time lying on a couch, wearing eyeshades and listening to religious music on headphones to augment their inward spiritual journey.

“Their instruction is to go within and collect experiences,” Richards said, after presenting his work at the Breaking Convention conference in London this month. “So far everyone incredibly values their experience. No one has been confused or upset or regrets doing it.”

A full analysis of the outcomes will take place after a one-year follow-up with the participants, whose identities are being kept anonymous. “It is too early to talk about results, but generally people seem to be getting a deeper appreciation of their own religious heritage,” he said. “The dead dogma comes alive for them in a meaningful way. They discover they really believe this stuff they’re talking about.”

There is also a suggestion that after their psychedelic journey, the leaders’ notions of religion shifted away from the sectarian towards something more universal. “They get a greater appreciation for other world religions. Other ways up the mountain, if you will,” said Richards.

Gates claims a security supervisor for the telephone company told him in 1979 that the firm had obtained a computer program through the FBI that gave it access to the county computer used to count votes.

The deposition does not say if vote totals ever were changed. Gates claimed to have installed wire taps on county computers befoore the elections in 1977 through 1981 and believes, but wasn't certain, in 1982 and 1983.

TRUMP’S NEW CDC CHIEF CHAMPIONED PARTNERSHIP WITH COCA-COLA TO SOLVE CHILDHOOD OBESITY
Lee Fang
July 8 2017, 7:01 a.m.

THE NEW CHIEF of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which monitors significant public health concerns, including the impact of sugary beverages on obesity and heart disease, will be led by Brenda Fitzgerald, a Georgia physician whose signature childhood obesity project was underwritten by Coca-Cola.

The announcement to appoint Fitzgerald as the CDC director was made on Friday by a Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price.

Fitzgerald, a former Republican candidate for Congress and adviser to Newt Gingrich, most recently served as the Georgia Public Health Commissioner. Price and Gingrich both previously represented the 6th Congressional District in Georgia, now held by Republican Karen Handel.

During her tenure as Georgia’s public health watchdog, in a state that has one of the highest obesity rates in the nation, Fitzgerald and Gov. Nathan Deal launched SHAPE, a statewide effort to address childhood obesity through “physical activity before class, physical activity during class, and more structured recess.”

Muhtar Kent, the chief executive and chairman of Coca-Cola Company, appeared with the governor and Fitzgerald to promote the initiative, along with a pledge of $1 million from his company to fund it. Clyde Tuggle, a Coca-Cola executive responsible for the company’s lobbying strategy, was initially appointed to the board overseeing the state anti-obesity strategy, including Fitzgerald’s SHAPE initiative. (Tuggle announced his retirement from Coca-Cola in March of this year.)

“This generous award will have a significant impact on the lives of our children today and well into the future,” Fitzgerald said at the news conference. “Unless we address this obesity epidemic facing our children right now, they will likely suffer life-long consequences of obesity — diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. With this money we can make a real difference.”

Coca-Cola was so fond of Fitzgerald’s approach to obesity issues that an opinion column authored by Fitzgerald is featured prominently on Coca-Cola’s website.

Public health officials around the country have made obesity a top issue of concern. The United States has the distinction of having the highest rate of childhood obesity in the world, according to a recent report from the New England Journal of Medicine. And multiple reports have found that regular consumption of sugary beverages is a leading driver of obesity, which is linked to heart disease, diabetes, kidney diseases, cancers and hypertension.

More exercise, of course, is a good thing, but the Georgia SHAPE program notably eschewed another well-known step toward healthier living: curbing sugary beverage consumption. Touting Coca-Cola’s support of her program on local news station WXIA-TV, Fitzgerald explained her approach. “We’re going to concentrate on what you should eat,” she said, before simply suggesting that children eat more fruits and vegetables. Fitzgerald did not recommend the approach adopted by public officials around the country, namely that children should cut sweetened soda and junk foods from their diet.

The contrast was laid out explicitly in a presentation in 2015. In explaining SHAPE, officials from the Georgia Department of Public Health overtly contrasted the “Georgia vs. California” model on the obesity epidemic. Cities in California, the slide noted, passed the first tax on sugary drinks. Georgia, on the other hand, proposed the largest exemption to new federal rules curbing the sale of junk food in public schools.

Coca-Cola, along with PepsiCo and other sugar industry interests, has worked obsessively to defeat attempts to regulate sugary beverages. Sugar industry interests, including Coca-Cola, have spent at least $67 million on campaign efforts to defeat sugar taxes and related labeling ballot measures. Emails hacked from Democratic officials during the 2016 presidential campaign revealed that executives from Coca-Cola, including Clyde Tuggle, the Coca-Cola vice president overseeing SHAPE, attempted to pressure the Hillary Clinton campaign to back down from voicing support for a soda tax. The company was also caught setting up a front group, called the Global Energy Balance Network, designed to downplay the health risks associated with sugary drinks.

Los Angeles mosque prayers leader in FBI custody for hours
July 8, 2017 - 8:34 PM News Code : 841173 Source : Tasnim Link:

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - The US Federal Bureau of Investigation released Imam Mujahid Abdul Karim, the prayers leader of “Masjid Al-Rasul” mosque in Los Angeles after taking him in custody four hours.
The US security forces raided Imam Mujahid Abdul Karim’s home on Friday and arrested him but he was released after four hours being in custody.

FBI forces have also confiscated personal computer of the prayers leader of mosque.

Imam Mujahid Abdul Karim is now consulting with his lawyers on the issue.

He was scheduled to travel to Chicago in order to inaugurate a Mosque there. FBI forces prevented his trip by arresting him.

Imam Mujahid Abdul Karim (born Benjamin Farmer, December 26, 1944) is an African-American convert to Islam, who is best known for his involvement and "spearheading" of the April 26, 1992 Watts Gang Truce between the four influential rival gangs— Watts Hacienda Village Bloods, Grape Street Watts Crips, Bounty Hunter Watts Bloods, and PJ Watts Crips. He is imam of Masjid Al Rasul mosque in Watts, Los Angeles and the leader of the Imam Mahdi Movement.

During this period of his community social activism, he also had his first encounters with several Iranian foreign students who were at the time attending UCLA and were regularly attending the Friday prayer service being held at the mosque. These students were followers of the Shiite school of Islamic thought and gave him a book to read about the grandson of the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (PBUH), Hussain ibn Ali (AS). After reading this book, and being convinced of the validity of the Shiite school of Islam through other proofs, Abdul Karim decided he was going to convert his masjid to the first ever indigenous African American run Shiite mosque in America.

During the period spanning from 1983-1989, Abdul Karim felt it was necessary to go to the holy seminary city of Qom, Iran, in order to further enhance his knowledge of Islam.

However, in 1990, Abdul Karim was forced to return to America to continue the work of "building" a lasting peace among gang leaders in the Watts community of Los Angeles, California.

Mujahid Abdul Karim has been granted special awards, honors, and recognition including Ambassador for Peace award presented by Senator Roderick Wright, Special Recognition for originating Watts Peace Treaty by Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Certificate of Recognition for the 20th Anniversary of the Watts Peace Treaty by Councilman Joe Buscaino.

Masjid Al-Rasul Vision

According to the official website of Masjid Al-Rasul, Imam Mujahid Abdul Karim founded Masjid Al-Rasul, in 1980, over 30 years ago, in the Watts community of Los Angeles, California, which is currently the only Shiite Masjid in the United States that is strategically located in an historical indigenous Community. In addition, Masjid Al Rasul of Watts, Los Angeles, is also the first Masjid to be established in the United States, based on the Ja’fari school of thought, which is exclusively owned and operated by Indigenous American Shiites

Masjid Al-Rasul’s vision is to build Masjids and Islamic communities in the poorest neighborhoods in the US, in order to help improve the lives of people that are the most impoverished, oppressed and forgotten people of America.

In 1992, Masjid Al-Rasul of Watts, Los Angeles became the site of the first-ever “ceasefire” truce between the two largest national rival gangs “Crips” & “Bloods.” A treaty was signed at Masjid Al-Rasul by dozens of high ranking gang members from across the Los Angeles, California area. This historical truce not only successfully reduced the murder rate in Los Angeles, California, but it was also the catalyst to similar “ceasefire” truces with other gangs across America, thereby significantly reducing violence throughout the United States. Sheikh Mujahid makes an historical analogy of this truce with that of the truce between the two major warring tribes, ‘Aws’ and ‘Khazraj’ during the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Consequently, during a violent period in American history — a time when riots ran rampant across America, due to the aftermath of the “Rodney King Incident,” Masjid Al-Rasul was instrumental in helping to reduce violence and bring peace to America by pioneering the Peace Initiative between gangs throughout the US.

Furthermore, prior to the above-mentioned peace treaty, the community of Watts, Los Angeles was far too dangerous for any significant community development, due to gang violence (i.e., drive-by shootings and armed robberies). As a direct result of Masjid Al-Rasul’s impact on the Watts community, its members can now feel safe to benefit from community improvement

Convicted of Murder, and Now Swept Up in U.S.-Cuba Shift
By AZAM AHMEDJULY 8, 2017

Ishmael Muslim Ali now lives a quiet life in Cuba, where he remains wanted by the F.B.I. for aircraft piracy. Credit Cave 7 Productions
For more than 30 years, Ishmael Muslim Ali has lived a relatively full and unremarkable life in Cuba. He taught English in the nation’s public schools, worked as a translator and raised a family — a quiet coda for an international fugitive.

Or at least, that was the case until last month, when President Trump announced a partial halt to relations with Cuba unless certain conditions were met. Handing over Mr. Ali, who resides on the F.B.I.’s most-wanted list for hijacking an American Airlines flight and fleeing to Cuba to escape multiple life sentences for the murder of eight people, is one of those conditions.

Mr. Trump’s demands contained the usual requirements for Cuba: free and fair elections, allowing a political opposition and opening up its economy. But they also included a call for the extradition of all American convicts who had fled to the island for asylum. Among them are Assata Shakur, also known as Joanne Chesimard, who is wanted for escaping from prison while serving a life sentence for the murder of a New Jersey state trooper, and an estimated 70 others who have taken refuge in the communist nation.

As to the threat of being sent home, Mr. Ali, 69, harbors no concern. The Cuban government has already made it clear that the extradition of those granted asylum is off the table — along with the other demands laid out by the president.

THE COLLUSION
JUNE 22ND, 2006

In the summer of 2000, members of MI5 and the FBI met in the Washington office of the FBI. The purpose of the meeting was to finalise the details of the stitch up of Michael McKevitt. Back in the mid 1990’s the FBI had supplied MI5 with a paid informant, David Rupert. Rupert had worked with the FBI since 1974. He was a multiple bankrupt and a career informant for 30 years, working initially with the FBI and later with MI5. During those years he was arrested for cheque and wire fraud as well as suspected white slavery having been found with a 15 year old run-away in his truck. He was never charged or convicted of any of the above. However his informant services where used extensively throughout the same period.

Rupert travelled to Ireland spying on Irish citizens from the early 1990’s. During the mid 90’s Rupert was introduced to MI5 who according to him directed and controlled his actions while in Ireland. At one point the FBI funded the lease of a Bar and adjoining caravan and camping holiday park in Co. Leitrim as a base for Rupert to spy from. Rupert claimed the park was being used by IRA sympathisers and duly sent the names, addresses and telephone numbers of all the families mainly from Belfast who had holidayed in the park to the FBI and MI5. This was at a time when Loyalist death squads were receiving information from state forces to set up and murder selected individuals on their instructions. The Garda authorities were aware of Rupert passing details on to FBI/MI5 about Irish citizens yet they chose to allow this to happen.

Throughout his stay in Ireland Rupert claimed he forwarded all of the relevant intelligence he had acquired to MI5 via encrypted e-mails. Between 1997 and 2001 Rupert posted 2166 e-mails to his paymasters in British intelligence.

According to an article in Forum Magazine:

“On 11 April 1998, Rupert dispatched his most controversial e-mail to MI5 headquarters. It was almost five months before the now infamous maroon Vauxhall Cavalier would decimate the centre of Omagh town and kill 29 people. For this reason the e-mail was all the more startling because in it Rupert informed MI5 that a dissident republican group was planning a car bomb attack in Omagh. The April car bomb attack in Omagh was eventually frustrated by Gardai south of the border. However, MI5 management knew the threat was only postponed and not extinguished. Within days MI5 e-mailed Rupert: “We disrupted the intention to use the car bomb, but maybe not for long”. MI5 obviously foresaw the strong likelihood of a renewed attempt to bomb Omagh. However, MI5 now held the advantage over the would-be car bombers in that from as early as April 1998 it knew Omagh was a likely target for a dissident republican car bomb attack.

Omagh bomb August 1998.

Rupert’s e-mails were not the only pre-August 15th information in MI5’s possession which pointed to a dissident republican attack in Omagh. A second key piece of intelligence came to light on August 4 when an anonymous phone-caller warned British intelligence of a planned dissident republican gun and bomb attack in Omagh on August 15. MI5 subsequently claimed that it dismissed this anonymous phone-warning as a rogue RUC Special Branch call. However, this was a poor attempt at distraction. The importance in all of this is that whereas Rupert provided specific details with regard to the proposed location of the planned bombing, this phone-warning supplemented his e-mail intelligence by not only confirming the location, but also providing the all important precise date of the planned attack.

However, the windfall of dissident republican intelligence did not end there. MI5 possessed a third piece of high-grade information which indicated that a car bomb attack was scheduled for mid-August. Two days before the Omagh bombing, FRU agent Kevin Fulton met with a Real IRA informant whose clothing, according to Fulton, was covered in dust particles of homemade explosives. Fulton correctly suspected that a car bomb attack was in an advanced stage of planning. Fulton provided British intelligence with the agent’s name and car registration number. Yet once again this vital piece of intelligence was ignored.

But perhaps the most startling disclosure concerning MI5’s foreknowledge of Omagh came during the inquest into the bombing. According to the Sunday Business Post (26/8/2001) leading British barrister Michael Mansfield QC, acting for Lawrence Rush, cross-examined several RUC witnesses. It emerged that a warning specifying the precise location of the bomb had not been passed on to local officers in time to clear the area.

“After that, we started getting threatening calls. We were told by the RUC that our name was on a death-list,” Solicitor Des Doherty said.

The RUC also confirmed to Doherty that a newspaper report of a spy satellite picking out the car used to transport the bomb was correct.

Doherty said. “It is understood that when the RUC contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation in America, they produced information from the satellite.”

This suggests that the maroon Vauxhall Cavalier contained a tracking device which enabled a US GPS satellite not only to follow the car’s movements but also pinpoint its exact location on the day of the bombing. At the request of MI5, US intelligence would have monitored the car as a priority and would have conveyed this surveillance data to MI5 without delay. Yet MI5 chose not to relay this information to RUC officers on the ground on August 15. Furthermore, the presence of a tracking device on the maroon Vauxhall Cavalier indicates the involvement of an MI5 agent in the planning or the execution of the Omagh bombing, at some point between the unlawful procurement of the maroon Vauxhall Cavalier and the detonation of the explosives on August 15.

After the Omagh bombing MI5 ordered Rupert out of Ireland as a matter of urgency. An August 16 MI5 e-mail instructed Rupert to “insulate yourself from the Gardai” [MI5 to David Rupert, E-mail 305, 16-08-98]. Later that night Rupert was ordered to: “Collect tickets at Belfast City Airport…You’ll be here [London] for two nights. We need to talk. It’s extremely important” [MI5 to David Rupert, E-mail 329, 17-08-98]. Rupert’s MI5 handlers obviously feared that their agent might be gripped as part of a massive cross-border investigation and that – if placed under sufficient pressure – Rupert might disclose the prior bomb warning he had conveyed to MI5 in early April in relation to Omagh. Indeed all of Rupert’s MI5 e-mails on Omagh were subsequently withheld from Nuala O’Loan when she conducted her large-scale investigation into the intelligence background to the tragic bombing. By late August 1998 there were a number of skeletons inside MI5’s cupboard.

Steve Flemmi is the prosecution key witness already serving life without parole who says he accompanies Bulger on most of his murder sprees, including the strangling of Flemini’s own girlfriend, Debra Davies, because she knew the two men were FBI informers.

On Friday Flemmi testifies that in the 1980s, FBI agent John Newton gave him and Bulger a case of C-4 explosives to send to the IRA.

“It was a surprise when we got it,” Flemmi old the court adding that he believed that Newton, who was a former Green Beret, got the plastic explosives while in military training.

Newton had the explosives in his South Boston home and arranged for the two gangsters to come and pick it up. Newton has denied the accusation.

Links to the IRA have surfaced in the trial. Bulger was very close to senior IRA figure Joe Cahill, meeting him frequently in Boston after he smuggled him across the border from Canada on a supporters bus when the Boston Bruins hockey team were playing a Canadian side.

Bulger idolized Cahill according to Kevin Cullen and Shelley Murphy two Boston Globe writers who have written a definitive book on Bulger called “Whitey Bulger”

Bulger had an Irish passport obtained legally through his grandparents nationality in 1987.

Following the explosives hand over, the IRA worked with the Bulger gang on getting more weapons which ended when the Valhalla trawler left Gloucester, Mass in 1984 chock full of guns and explosives for the IRA. The 7 and half tons of weapons was estimated to have cost $1 million dollars

The arms were handed off to an Irish fishing trawler the Marita Ann but that boat was stopped and boarded by Irish navy officials tipped off by an IRA mole.

ALEA visits FBI center at Redstone Arsenal

Officials with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency on Monday addressed attendees of the inaugural FBI Analytical Writing Course at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, according to a press release.

ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor, state Bureau of Investigation Director Gene Wiggins and Alabama Fusion Center Director Jay Moseley spoke about the value of the analytical products to the intelligence and law enforcement communities and the importance of the two-week training, which concluded Friday.

They also expressed thanks to the FBI for providing this training to fusion center intelligence analysts from across the nation.

Fusion centers were created by state and local public safety executives in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and given the mission of assisting in the identification, prevention, mitigation, response and recovery of terrorist acts and other major criminal activity.

“Every day across the 79 fusion centers in 50 states and three U.S. territories, personnel assigned to lead and work in fusion centers from state and local law enforcement, homeland security, fire, public health and emergency management agencies, working alongside federal law enforcement and homeland security partners, are accomplishing that mission,” the release said. “They work to identify behavior that is reasonably indicative of pre-operational planning associated with terrorism or other criminal activity. Fusion center staff are also accomplishing their public safety mission with the protection of privacy, civil rights and civil liberties as a core function of their analytical activities.”

At the heart of every fusion center is an analyst who has the task of developing data into the intelligence products used to identify and prevent threats to communities and aid in the mitigation, response and recovery when public safety resources are unable to stop the threat. The National Network of Fusion Centers has more than 1,000 analysts supported through the development of training courses with federal partners.

The Framing of Michael McKevitt: Omagh, David Rupert, MI5 & FBI Collusion

Excerpt from the booklet, The Framing of Michael McKevitt

The Blanket is serialising the booklet.

Marcella Sands • 22 June 2006

Within days MI5 e-mailed Rupert: "We disrupted the intention to use the car bomb, but maybe not for long". MI5 obviously foresaw the strong likelihood of a renewed attempt to bomb Omagh. However, MI5 now held the advantage over the would-be car bombers in that from as early as April 1998 it knew Omagh was a likely target for a dissident republican car bomb attack.

Rupert's e-mails were not the only pre-August 15th information in MI5's possession which pointed to a dissident republican attack in Omagh.

Fulton provided British intelligence with the agent's name and car registration number. Yet once again this vital piece of intelligence was ignored.

But perhaps the most startling disclosure concerning MI5's foreknowledge of Omagh came during the inquest into the bombing.

"After that, we started getting threatening calls. We were told by the RUC that our name was on a death-list," Solicitor Des Doherty said.
The RUC also confirmed to Doherty that a newspaper report of a spy satellite picking out the car used to transport the bomb was correct.
Doherty said. "It is understood that when the RUC contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation in America, they produced information from the satellite.”

This suggests that the maroon Vauxhall Cavalier contained a tracking device which enabled a US GPS satellite not only to follow the car's movements but also pinpoint its exact location on the day of the bombing.

An August 16 MI5 e-mail instructed Rupert to "insulate yourself from the Gardai" [MI5 to David Rupert, E-mail 305, 16-08-98]. Later that night Rupert was ordered to: "Collect tickets at Belfast City Airport...You'll be here [London] for two nights. We need to talk. It's extremely important" [MI5 to David Rupert, E-mail 329, 17-08-98]. Rupert's MI5 handlers obviously feared that their agent might be gripped as part of a massive cross-border investigation and that - if placed under sufficient pressure - Rupert might disclose the prior bomb warning he had conveyed to MI5 in early April in relation to Omagh. Indeed all of Rupert's MI5 e-mails on Omagh were subsequently withheld from Nuala O'Loan when she conducted her large-scale investigation into the intelligence background to the tragic bombing. By late August 1998 there were a number of skeletons inside MI5's cupboard.

We now know MI5 possessed four pieces of high-grade intelligence which forewarned of a dissident republican car bomb attack in Omagh on August 15. The earliest intelligence data was dated 11 April. Then came the anonymous August 4 phone-call, Kevin Fulton's August 13 intelligence report and finally the satellite monitoring of the Vauxhall Cavalier arising from a tracking device planted by a British agent involved in the Omagh bombing. Yet notwithstanding this avalanche of intelligence MI5 made no attempt to intercept the bomb How can this operational decision be rationally explained? What was the motivation of MI5 management? Did British intelligence want to protect the identity of its agent at all costs? Or was this yet another "securocrat" plot to subvert the peace?

MI5 management did not want to scupper the peace process, but it did want to protect the identity of its agent and, at the same time, drive - what it hoped would be - the final nail into physical force republicanism at an exceptionally sensitive time in the Irish peace process.”

Queens man says NYPD detectives planted cocaine, marijuana in his apartment in suit
BY ANDREW KESHNER
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Monday, July 24, 2017, 1:20 PM

A Queens man is suing to chop down a conviction he blames on detectives who planted evidence.

Anthony Lopez says there's no way cocaine and marijuana were found at his Jamaica apartment — unless police put it there during a bogus 2014 search.

And he says it's no coincidence that two officers at the search, Detectives Kevin Desormeau and Sasha Neve, are now facing criminal charges in Manhattan and Queens for allegedly lying in court documents and testimony about facts in other cases.

Lopez says he was boxed into accepting a misdemeanor plea on a weapons possession charge. In his July 17 lawsuit, Lopez asked a Brooklyn federal judge to rule that his civil rights were violated by the detectives and the NYPD, which he claims failed to train its investigators.

How an ex-FBI profiler helped put an innocent man behind bars

Exasperated, Jeffrey Ehrlich paused the true-crime television show every couple of minutes. The same thought kept running through the attorney’s mind: “No, that's wrong.”

The episode of “Killer Instinct” highlighted how the work of a retired FBI profiler had helped convict Ehrlich’s client of killing an 18-year-old woman in a Palmdale parking lot.

There were no fingerprints left behind, no murder weapon. But clues from the crime scene caught the profiler’s attention. The driver’s-side window of the victim’s car had been lowered several inches, suggesting to the profiler that the teen had rolled it down when someone who looked trustworthy approached. And her tube top was askew — a sign, the profiler said, of a botched sexual assault.

Claremont college suspends students for demonstration against pro-police speaker

Claremont McKenna College has suspended three students for a year and two others for a semester for blocking access to a campus event to protest a speaker known for defending police against Black Lives Matter activists.

The action, announced last week, arises out of an April 6 demonstration during which students and others ignored temporary barriers and blocked entrances to the Athenaeum and Kravis Center, where author and commentator Heather Mac Donald was scheduled to speak.

Many participants chanted “black lives matter” and “black lives — they matter here.”

At the time, campus officials and security decided not to make arrests or force the estimated 250 protesters to disperse. Instead, Mac Donald spoke before a handful of observers while the college live-streamed the event. Her 30-minute talk also was made available for later viewing.

Top 5 Worst NYPD Brutality Moments

The recent incident with Michael Mineo claiming he was sodomized with a baton by police officers in Brooklyn has shown that police brutality is still a major problem in New York. This is not the first time a minority male has been sodomized by an NYPD officer.

Its seem as if most incidents of brutality in New York involve either sodomy or the shooting of unarmed and innocent civilians. As disturbing as the events actually are, even more disturbing is the amount of times that officers are acquitted for their actions. Here are some of the most disturbing occurrences of police brutality in New York in recent memory.

1. Abner Louima.

What happened to Abner Louima would’ve been disturbing if it happened in the Abu Graib prisons. Abner Louima was at a club in Brooklyn when a fight broke out. Policeman, Justin Volpe, mistakenly took Louima for a man who sucker punched him and began beating him up on the street.

Justin Volpe

Officers took Louima back to the precinct where Volpe continued to beat him. Volpe Kicked him in the testicles and sodomized him with a broomstick, causing critical internal damage. After he was done, Volpe, proudly displayed the excrement and blood stained broomstick to his co-workers and boasted that he had broken a man. Volpe then threatened to kill Louima and his family if he told anyone.

Volpe admitted in court to sodomizing Louima and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Only one other cop involved in the incident, Chris Schwartz, served any time. Louima sued the city successfully for $5.8 million.

2. Sean Bell

Sean Bell was killed on the morning of his wedding day at a strip club in queens. After leaving the nightclub, Bell and his friends were confronted by a plainclothes undercover officer who did not identify himself. When Bell sped off the officer along with his back up, let off 50 rounds into Bell’s vehicle, killing him and severely injuring his friends.

Although nobody in the car was found with a gun, police continued to smear Bell’s character after the incident as if Bell and his friends were under investigation and not the police officers. The officers were charged with manslaughter, reckless endangerment and assault but we’re all acquitted. Protests erupted all over New York and Al Sharpton was arrested.

3. Amadou Diallo

Diallo was an immigrant from the republic of Guinea who despite his education worked selling DVD’s and socks on 14th St while studying at night. While returning to to his home after a meal, Diallo caught the eye of 5 NYPD officers who believed he fit the description of a serial rapist. The officers followed him to his apartment door. When Diallo reached into his jacket, a police officer yelled gun and the other officers let off 41 shots, 19 hitting Diallo. No gun was found on Diallo, only a wallet he pulled out to identify himself.

The officers were charged with second-degree murder and reckless endangerment but were acquitted after the trial was moved from the Bronx to more cop-friendly Albany, New York. Diallo’s mother sued the city for $61 million (20 million plus a million for each shot fired) and wound up being awarded $3 million.

4. Randolph Evans

15 year old Randolph Evans was shot and killed on Thanksgiving Night in 1976. Officer, Robert Torsney, was called to a housing project in Brooklyn to investigate a man with a gun. He met with group of young black men and proceeded to shoot the unarmed Evans for no given reason. Although he never was treated for epilepsy, Torsney’s defense maintained that he killed Evans because of a rare case of epilepsy and he was acquitted on the grounds of mental insanity.

5. Alberta Spruil.

Albert Spruil was a 57 year old church-going city worker. Her only crime was living in the wrong neighborhood. Cops believed that there was a large amount of guns, drugs and vicious dogs in her Harlem apartment. Without knocking they battered her door in and threw a flash grenade into her apartment. Although they found now weapons or drugs in her apartment, they put her in handcuffs. Despite the fact that she told them she had a heart problem, it took an hour and half to get her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. The no knock raids have also killed a 92 year old black woman in Atlanta. Although no officers were charged in the incident, Spruil’s family collected $1.6 million for the

Pocatello police 'reviewing' video of man filming FBI building following his arrest
Officer: Photography is violating voyeurism laws

Posted: Jul 23, 2017 06:18 PM MDT
Updated: Jul 23, 2017 07:05 PM

A Chubbuck man claims the Pocatello Police Department violated his First Amendment rights when officers arrested him for recording video from outside the FBI office.

“I stopped directly across the street and filmed vehicles entering the FBI complex for approximately 10 minutes before a police car drove up behind me,” Sean Johnson wrote to KIFI/KIDK reporter Chris Oswalt in an email. “I was standing on the sidewalk across the street from the complex, near a bus stop. I was just standing there filming, not saying anything to anyone, nor waving my arms around or otherwise causing a commotion.”

The video recorded in June, which is posted on YouTube, has just over 1,800 views. Johnson said he posted the video to raise awareness of “local police force's attitude and knowledge towards First Amendment activity.”

In the video, which starts with Johnson zooming in on the license plate of a vehicle pulling into a secured parking lot, an exchange can be heard between a Pocatello officer and Johnson begin about 27 seconds into the video.

“Everything alright?” the officer asked. Johnson does not acknowledge the officer until the unidentified officer tells Johnson he “got a call” that Johnson “was recording the FBI building.”

“That's correct, I am,” Johnson can be heard saying in the video.

During the nearly six-minute video, the officer continually explained to Johnson that he was conducting a criminal investigation into Johnson's recording.

"Right now I am conducting a criminal investigation,” the officer is heard saying. “We got a report that you were recording the FBI building. So I need to see your identification"

"What crime?" Johnson replied. “Public voyeurism,” the officer answered.

Idaho code does not have a public voyeurism law. There is, however, a video voyeurism code. It is listed under “Chapter 66: Sex Crimes.” Much of the code is targeted at sex crimes and sexual exploitation of another person. It does not address filming from a public right way, which is a protected federal right.

“Did you get their permission to record?” the officer asks Johnson in the video.

“Do I need their permission?” Johnson asks in a reply. “Absolutely,” the officer is heard saying. “It is called public voyeurism,” he continues.

The officer continually uses public voyeurism as grounds for his conversation with Johnson, telling him he needs permission to record a federal building and employees.

A three-page memo to all federal employees and law enforcement from August 2010 says otherwise. In the memo, it clearly reads “remember the public has the right to photograph the exterior of Federal Buildings from publicly accessible spaces, such as streets, sidewalks, parks or plazas.”

The memo goes onto say the recording of federal buildings cannot impede on law enforcement operations. Johnson is charged with resisting or obstructing officers.

Throughout the six-minute video, officers can be heard repeatedly asking Johnson for his ID. Each time, he provides little information until officers place him under arrest, explaining their reasoning.

"I gave you plenty of opportunities to provide identification,” the officer is heard. “You didn't identify yourself. I'm conducting an investigation for unlawful reason of you providing identification. So tell me who you are. Sean Johnson? That's a pretty common name."

“I was taken to jail and held for 15 hours until I paid my bail of $300 directly from my own account,” Johnson wrote in his email. “I have since retained an attorney and the expectation is that the charge of 'obstruction and delay' will be dropped by the prosecutor.”

The Pocatello Police Department said it is aware of the “YouTube video concerning filming of the FBI facility. The department is looking into the matter."

Hundreds of comments have flooded the police department's Facebook page starting the night of Saturday, July 23. Following several comments regarding the video and arrest, a spokesperson said the police department's Facebook page was taken down by an employee, but could not elaborate on why.”

“That will be determined this week,” city spokesperson Logan McDonnell said in a phone call with Oswalt.

The Facebook page has since been restored.

Johnson says he is considering legal action against the city.

"I am definitely considering it, but since my pretrial conference has not even happened yet I think it's a bit early yet," Johnson wrote. "The conference had been rescheduled to 8/10 due to a delay of the city providing materials as part of the discovery process."

Pocatello Police were criticized by the public earlier this month when a video surfaced showing an officer appearing to be sleeping on the job. The department said it was investigating that video back on July 1. Today, the department says the officer is still employed.

“As it is a personnel issue, we cannot comment further," a statement said.

South Miami Just Made a Huge Rooftop Solar Decision

Published: July 20th, 2017
South Miami this week became the first city outside of California to require all new homes to install solar panels on their roofs. Six cities in the Golden State began requiring solar to be installed on new homes over the past few years. But in Florida, where voters killed proposed solar restrictions last year, South Miami is now a pioneer.

This week, the South Miami City Commission in a 4-1 vote approved a law requiring solar panels to be installed on all new homes built in the city.

Mayor Philip Stoddard says the city is trying to cut its carbon footprint because the region will be deeply affected by climate change, especially as sea levels rise.

“We’re down in South Florida where climate change and sea level rise are existential threats, so we’re looking for every opportunity to promote renewable energy,” Stoddard said. “It’s carbon reduction, plain and simple. We have a pledge for carbon neutrality. We support the Paris Climate Agreement.”

Stoddard said he expects only a few new homes and other buildings to be built in South Miami this year because the city of about 11,000 is surrounded on all sides by dense urban development and has very little space for new construction. But the requirement for new homes complements the city’s push for existing homeowners to put solar on their roofs.

It also sets an example for other cities that may be considering doing the same thing.

Action to expand renewables on the local level is critical at a time when the federal government has stepped back from advocating for renewable energy, said Jeremy Firestone, director of the Center for Carbon-free Power Integration at the University of Delaware.

Rooftop solar helps wean America’s electric power system off coal and natural gas power plants that pollute the atmosphere with large amounts of carbon dioxide. President Obama made support for rooftop solar a part of his Climate Action Plan, which the Trump administration has abandoned.

“These mandates will have an effect locally,” Firestone said. “As to the larger effect, they would hopefully move states to increase the fraction of (electricity) generation that has to be dedicated toward renewable energy.”

Solar installation mandates would also help accelerate the acceptance of rooftop solar across the country, said K Kaufmann, spokeswoman for the Smart Electric Power Alliance, a nonpartisan renewable energy education organization in Washington, D.C.

As solar panel costs have fallen in recent years, a growing number of homes have installed them, often with the assistance of companies such as SolarCity, which helps to finance and install photovoltaic panels.

Rooftop solar makes up only a tiny fraction — less than 1 percent — of all the electricity generated in the U.S.. The amount of electricity generated by solar panels installed on homes and businesses across the country is expected to grow by 70 percent by the end of next year.

So far, the largest city in the country to mandate rooftop solar panels is San Francisco, which began requiring them on most new buildings beginning in January. The city mandates that solar panels, a “living roof,” or a combination of the two occupy between 15 and 30 percent of the surface area of a new rooftop. A “living roof” is covered with grass, trees or other vegetation.

Other California cities that have mandated solar panel installations include Culver City, San Mateo, Lancaster, Sebastopol and Santa Monica.

In Florida, the rooftop solar mandate didn’t come easily for South Miami.

Florida utilities and other groups launched a ballot initiative last year in an attempt to limit the expansion of rooftop solar. The proposed amendment to the state constitutional would have allowed utilities to charge fees to solar panel owners as a way to make up for the loss of revenue when homeowners generate their own electricity, according to Politifact.

The state’s largest utilities spent more than $20 million to support the ballot initiative, but the measure failed at the polls in November. South Miami’s electric utility, Florida Power and Light, which supported the ballot measure, did not respond to a request for comment.

In June, the South Miami solar mandate was opposed by the Washington, D.C. lobbying group Family Businesses for Affordable Energy, which says on its website that homeowners expose themselves to “predatory companies” that hide various costs associated with solar installations. The group did not respond to requests for comment.

“Despite all our sunshine, public utilities have spent tens of millions of dollars to fight solar,” Stoddard said. The measure’s defeat helped clear the way for the city to push solar panel installations for both new and existing homes.

Sex, joy rides and car chases: Scandal in LAPD youth cadet program sparks alarm and calls for reform

The police officer talked strategy with the young cadets as they prepared for an obstacle course competition.

Should the strongest person go first? The tallest? Teamwork was important, said the officer, Ruby Aguirre.

As the teenagers — addressing everyone with a “Sir” or “Ma’am” — powered across monkey bars or scrambled to catch footballs in Elysian Park earlier this month, the scene seemed straight out of a recruiting brochure for the Los Angeles Police Department’s cadet program, which enrolls over 2,000 local youths.

But a recent scandal involving cadets, stolen police cars and illicit sex was not far from their minds.

The disturbing events have illuminated deficiencies both in the cadet program and in how the LAPD keeps tabs on its cars and other equipment.

The department’s written manual governing contact between cadets and adults has not been updated in more than a decade, even though a police officer was recently convicted of sexual crimes involving a 16-year-old cadet.

In the LAPD’s equipment rooms, officers say a culture of laxity has become the norm, creating opportunities for anyone — volunteers, cadets or officers — to walk off with property.

The weight of a heavy sentence landed in the quiet federal courtroom Wednesday morning, leaving Gregory Burleson occasionally stroking his graying beard and his attorney pleading unsuccessfully for leniency.

The 53-year-old Burleson was the first to be sentenced for his role in the 2014 standoff between federal agents and supporters of Cliven Bundy near his Nevada ranch.

He got 68 years in prison.

U.S. District Court Judge Gloria Navarro did take into account his blindness and frailty — he sat in a wheelchair during the hearing — but she also reminded Burleson of his crimes, which included threatening a federal law enforcement officer, obstruction of justice and interstate travel in aid of extortion.

'An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power' with Al Gore: movie

Wednesday, July 26, 2017, 6:00 AM

With Al Gore. The veep is back, with another global warning. movie
It’s a good thing Al Gore is used to disappointments.

His new documentary, “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power,” was supposed to be about how things have changed for the better since 2006’s “An Inconvenient Truth.”

The bad news is, global warming continues. It may even be getting worse. But the good news is, people are finally doing something about it.

And in the film’s happy ending, the nations of the world sign the Paris Agreement on fighting climate change. Everyone celebrates. Gore heads home to Tennessee.

Al Gore renews his vote to eliminate the Electoral College
That's the upbeat way the film was supposed to leave you.

Except last month President Trump said the Paris deal was lousy, dead, forget about it. He was pulling out.

It’s a huge setback for the agreement, Gore and other global-warming activists. But it doesn’t make “An Inconvenient Sequel” obsolete. It makes it more important than ever.

Because now you're reminded of what the deniers are trying to forget. Ice caps melting into our oceans. Rising tides flooding cities. Disastrous hurricanes and paralyzing droughts.

Al Gore: Trump’s Paris withdrawal is ‘reckless and indefensible'
The material is familiar to anyone who saw the original Oscar-winning “An Inconvenient Truth,” although the footage itself is new.

What’s even fresher, though, is the approach. The first movie was just stiff-as-a-board Gore and his bar graphs. It had the feel of a watch-this-it's-good-for-you slideshow.

This time, though, Gore gets out of the lecture hall and into the streets. We see him trudging through a waterlogged Miami. Carefully crossing a fragile sheet of ice.

And doing what any politician does best — calling in favors, wrangling deals and trying to move a pet cause forward.

Al Gore has 'lengthy and very productive' meeting with Trump
The stakes are high, too. As the movie points out, although now more people are aware of the problem, there's less time to fix it.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But Gore keeps plugging away, and even finds signs of hope. Like a tiny town in red-state Texas that's switched its energy sources from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

“The less stuff you put in the air, the better it is,” the Republican mayor says flatly. “Common sense.”

“An Inconvenient Sequel” could use more interviews with people like that small-town mayor, folks who know pollution isn't partisan, and clean air and water aren’t political. Maybe the filmmakers will find room for them if they make another sequel.

L.A. sheriff says he'll appeal decision barring him from giving prosecutors a list of problem deputies

Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell will ask the state Supreme Court to review a recent lower-court decision that barred him from giving prosecutors the names of deputies with histories of serious misconduct, he said in a statement Wednesday.

The appeal, which has not yet been filed, will seek to “establish legal clarity” while balancing the privacy protections of officers’ personnel files, according to the statement.

“Our intent was never to compromise or give away your rights. And at no time was the department seeking to voluntarily turn over information from anyone’s personnel file,” McDonnell said in a video issued internally to deputies on Wednesday.

Election Wire-tap Alleged
Cincinnati Bell Denies Charges
The following paragraphs are excerpts from an article in the Cincinnati Post right before the November, 1987 Cincinnati Council Election. – Jim Condit Jr.

by Randy Ludlow
Post staff reporter
Cincinnati Bell security supervisors ordered wire taps installed on county computers before elections in the late 1970s and early 1980s that could have allowed vote totals to be altered, a former Bell employee says in a sworn court documents

Leonard Gates, a 23-year Cincinnati Bell employee until he was fired in 1986, claims in a deposition filed Thursday in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court to have installed the wire taps.

Cincinnati Bell officials denied Gates’ allegations tha are part of a six-year-old civil suit that contends the elections computer is subject to manipulation and fraud.

Gates claims a security supervisor for the telephone company told him in 1979 that the firm had obtained a computer program through the FBI that gave it access to the county computer used to count votes.

The deposition does not say if vote totals ever were changed. Gates claimed to have installed wire taps on county computers befoore the elections in 1977 through 1981 and believes, but wasn’t certain, in 1982 and 1983.

Gates’ allegations also have taken on political overtones. He appeared in a television commercial that aired twice Thursday on WKRC-Channel 12 for Jim Condit Jr., a Cincinnatus Party candidate for Cincinnati City Council.

The commercial also features former Bell employee Robert Draise, who was convicted of tapping a Hamilton, Ohio woman’s home and fired for it and who claims he wire-tapped the homes of multi-millionaire and anti-pornography crusader Charles Keating and former Hamilton County Commissioner Allen Paul.

Gates’ deposition claims he told the FBI, the U.S. Attorney’s ofice in Cincinnati and U.S. Rep. William Gradison, R-Cincinnati, about the alleged wire taps.

Gradison confirmed he met with Gates about two years ago and helped him contact the U.S. Department of Justice.

The Post also learned the FBI’s internal investigation arm – the Office of Professional Responsibility – is considering granting Gates immunity from prosectuion in exchange for his testimony. Local FBI officials declined comment.

U.S. Attorney D. Michael Crites declined comment Thursday on whether Gates’ allegations are under investigation, but said if the claims are true, federal wire-tapping laws may have been violated.

Cincinnati Bell spokesman Chuck Shawver said: “We categorically deny any wrongdoing by Cincinnati Bell. This is a disgruntled ex-employee making allegations which have been checked and found to have no foundation.” He declined further comment. Bell also denies Draise’s allegations, he said.

Neither Paul nor Keating, whose homes were allegedly tapped, could be reached for comment.

Gates, 44, of Anderson Township, was fired by Cincinnati Bell on May 15, 1986. He sued in U.S. District Court to get his job back and recover $350,000. That result is pending.

Gates’ deposition is part of a lawsuit filed in 1981 by attorney James Condit Sr. on behalf of a Cincinnatus candidate for council who claimed election results could be manipulated. Condit’s son, James Jr., is running the TV commercials featuring Gates and Draise.

Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor James Harper, representing the county, and Condit Sr. were at the deposition. Common Pleas Court Judge Richard Niehaus ordered the deposition for use as evidence if an appeals court overturns his dismissal 1981 lawsuit.

Harper, who represents the elections board, did not question Gates during the deposition and said he wanted to discuss the allegations with Prosecutor Arthur M. Ney Jr.

Condit Sr. said the political use of Gates’ allegations was peripheral. “Gates’ deposition had to be filed prior to Nov. 13, when the Ohio First District Court of Appeals may rule on the appeal of the lawsuit”, he said.

Cincinnatus candidate Condit Jr., whose party believes elections are subject to fraud due to the use of computers, said he used the commercial to allow Gates and Draise to express their grievances because they have been trying to make their stories known for two years. The commercials will only air three times.

In the deposition, Gates claims he first installed a wire tap on a telephone line to the county computers before the 1977 election at the instruction of James West, a Bell security supervisor.

Gates contends both West and Peter Gabor, security director, told him to install wire taps in subsequent elections. Both men declined comment Thursday.

In 1979 – the election which is the focus of the deposition – Gates said he received instructions in the mail from West about installing wire taps on county computers in the County Administration Building at Court and Main streets.

The wire taps were installed on the eve of the election at Cincinnati Bell’s switching control center at Seventh and Elm Streets and terminated in a conference room in the building, Gates alleges.

In the deposition, Gates described in great technical detail installation of the wire taps.

About 8:30 p.m. on election day – Nov. 6, 1979 – Gates said he was called by West and told something had gone wrong causing the elections computer to malfunction. At West’s instructions, Gates said he removed the taps.

The elections computer shut down for two hours on election evening due to what was believed to be a power failure, Condit Sr. has said.

Gates said West told him they “had the ability to actually alter what was being done with the votes.”

Gates said West told him the Board of Elections did not know about the taps and that the computer program for the eletions computer “was obtained out of California, and that the programming had been obtained through the FBI … ”

Shortly after the 1979 election, Gates said he met with the late Richad Dugan, former Cincinnati Bell president, to express his concerns that the wire taps were done without a court order.

“Mr. Dugan said it was a very gray area . . . This was just small compared to what was going on. He told me just, if I had a problem, to talk to him and everything would be okay, but everything was under control,” Gates
John Conditt was head of the FBI Office of Professional Responsibility
when it allegedly investigated voter fraud in Cincinnati.

Months into Donald Trump's presidency, it is clear the administration has worked diligently to downplay the role of science in setting policy on energy.

Some moves to diminish scientists' roles have been more evident than others, but a new report details what has gone on behind the scenes.

In summary, scientists have been restricted, sidelined, and limited—and many now believe a "hostile environment" to factual analysis has become the norm.

DON'T MISS: Trump names proud climate-science denier to head EPA transition team

The report, produced by the Union of Concerned Scientists, was described by The Washington Post after Joel Clement, an outspoken scientist at the U.S. Department of Interior, was reassigned from the position he held before Trump took office.

Clement went from managing 25 employees as Director of Policy Analysis to a minor role in accounting.

The scientist—who clarified that "I am not an accountant"—believes the reassignment shows one way the current government works to sideline input on policy from the scientific community.

His reassignment came after he raised alarms over the dangers posed to Alaska Native communities by climate change. He is one of fully 50 scientists at senior levels who was reassigned.

The Union of Concerned Scientists report highlighted four points that it says have already helped to “diminish the role of science in our democracy.”

Federal advisory committees have been weakened, the use of terms such as "climate change" has been banned or restricted, “science-based safeguards” have been revoked, and a managerial culture of fear and intimidation has ensued.

Rashan Charles family calls for calm as vigil is held at east London police station
Gathering in Stoke Newington follows night of violence sparked by deaths of Charles and Edson Da Costa after they were arrested by police

Saturday 29 July 2017 11.54 EDT First published on Saturday 29 July 2017 09.50 EDT

The parents of two black men who died after being apprehended by the police have vowed to pursue justice for their sons amid growing calls for the officers involved to be disciplined

More than 100 people gathered outside Stoke Newington police station in east London on Saturday afternoon to show their anger towards the Metropolitan police.

Rashan Charles, 20, died last weekend after being restrained by officers in nearby Dalston, while Edson Da Costa, 25, from East Ham, died after contact with the police five weeks earlier.

The fathers of the men, Esa Charles and Ginario Da Costa, addressed the vigil promising to “continue to fight for justice” not only for their two sons but for all those who have died in police custody.

Charles also made a fresh plea for “peace on the streets” following outbreaks of violent disorder in Hackney on Friday night.

Protesters block Dalston road over Rashan Charles death
Da Costa told the Charles family they “know what they are going through”, adding: “My son also suffered at the hands of the police and, like Rashan, is no longer with us today.”

The emergence of video footage of Charles being violently restrained on the floor of a shop in Dalston, and claims that Da Costa became unconscious while in police custody, have prompted many to ask why no officers have been arrested or suspended.

WASHINGTON — A Washington police officer is under investigation for wearing a T-shirt to court that an advocacy group says has a racist symbol and offensive images.

Local media report the unidentified officer was assigned to desk duty Friday and ordered to have no contact with the public, pending an investigation. Police Chief Peter Newsham called the T-shirt "disgraceful."

The black shirt shows the Grim Reaper holding a rifle under a District of Columbia flag. Above the image is the word "Powershift" with a cross embedded in the letter "o."

That image is a "sun cross," which advocacy groups say white supremacist groups use in their logos and imagery.

The group Law 4 Black Lives DC has filed a complaint against the officer and posted an online petition demanding his firing.

Summary
This paper examines United States Representative Hale Boggs's 1971 speech on the House floor, in which he denounced J. Edgar Hoover and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for wiretapping members of Congress and infiltrating campus student groups. Following an introduction to the objectives of the paper, the first section reviews Boggs's academic and political career, giving some insight into his personality. The second part discusses the nature of Boggs's 1971 speech and the accuracy of the charges he leveled against Hoover and the FBI. The third part of the paper examines Boggs's motives for denouncing Hoover, speculating as to whether he personally had become a victim of the FBI surveillance that he had denounced and elaborating on Boggs's feelings toward Hoover. In the fourth part, the paper describes the reactions of the House and Senate and of Mr. Hoover to Boggs's allegations. The paper concludes that the object of Boggs's speech was to stir Congress to investigate the FBI in protection of the Bill of Rights, and that the brief but intense rhetoric of his speech was successful. The long read
What is a black professor in America allowed to say?

Thursday 3 August 2017 01.00 EDT

One Thursday morning in May, Tommy J Curry walked through the offices of the philosophy department at Texas A&M University with a police officer at his side and violence on his mind. The threats had started a few days earlier. “Since you said white people need to be killed I’m in fear of my life,” one person had written via email. “The next time I see you on campus I might just have to pre-emptively defend myself you dumb fat nigger. You are done.” Curry didn’t know if that person was lurking on the university grounds. But Texas is a gun-friendly state, and Texas A&M is a gun-friendly campus, and he took the threat seriously.

Lose yourself in a great story: Sign up for the long read email

Curry supports the right to bear arms. It was part of how he ended up in this situation. In 2012 he had appeared on a satellite radio show and delivered a five-minute talk on how uneasy white people are with the idea of black people talking about owning guns and using them to combat racist forces. When a recording of the talk resurfaced in May, people thought the tenured professor was telling black people to kill white people. This idea swept through conservative media and into the fever swamps of Reddit forums and racist message boards. The threats followed.

Anonymous bigots weren’t the only ones making Curry feel unwanted. Michael K Young, the president of Texas A&M, had called the professor’s comments “disturbing” and contrary to the values of the university. Curry was taken aback. His remarks on the radio were not a regrettable slip of the tongue. They were part of why the university had hired him.

A police officer met Curry inside his academic building and rode with him in the elevator to the philosophy department, on the third floor. In a hallway, the professor pointed to photos of his graduate students so the police officer would know who was supposed to be there. The officer told him to keep an eye out for unfamiliar faces. Curry picked up his mail. There were a few angry letters, and also an envelope marked with a Texas A&M logo. He put the hate mail into a folder and carried the whole bundle downstairs. Back in the car with his wife, he opened the university envelope. Inside was a copy of a letter from a campus official that he had received a few days earlier by email – before his inbox was flooded with racist messages.

Study finds human influence in the Amazon's third 1-in-100 year drought since 2005

Posted on 3 August 2017 by John Abraham
If you are like me, you picture the Amazon region as an ever lush, wet, tropical region filled with numerous plant and animal species. Who would imagine the Amazon experiencing drought? I mean sure, if we think of drought as “less water than usual,” then any place could have a drought. But what I tend to envision with respect to drought is truly dry.

People who work in this field have a more advanced understanding than I do about drought, how and why it occurs, its frequency and severity, and the impact on natural and human worlds. This recognition brings us to a very interesting paper recently published in Scientific Reports, entitled Unprecedented drought over tropical South America in 2016: significantly under-predicted by tropical SST[sea surface temperature]. So, what did this paper show?

Well, the Amazon region does encounter periodic droughts. There was one in 2005, another in 2010, both of which were 100-year events, and the most recent one in 2015-2016. The authors of this study, Amir Erfanian, Guiling Wang, and Lori Fomenko, all from the University of Connecticut, measured drought in three ways. They quantified the precipitation deficits and water storage on the ground. They also used two different vegetation measures of drought. The results showed that the most recent drought was unprecedented in severity. The video below shows a brief visual overview of the findings of this paper:

But the authors really wanted to know why the drought occurred in the first place and why it was so severe. Droughts in the Amazon region are mainly driven by surface water temperatures in the neighboring oceans, particularly in the El Niño/La Niña region. So, the authors looked at the relationship between changes in precipitation and sea surface temperatures in tropical oceans. They found that warmer than usual water in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans was the main driver for the reduced rainfall during the three extreme droughts in the past decade.

The authors also found that the water temperatures alone could not adequately explain the size and severity of the 2015-2016 drought. This suggests that there are other factors involved as well. To be clear, the authors found that the relationship between water temperatures and drought worked well for prior droughts (the 2005 and 2010 droughts as well as 1983 and 1998 droughts, also El Niño years) but fell apart in 2015-2016. That is, using the relationship, the predicted 2015-2016 drought should not have been nearly as severe or as large as it was. The paper also reports that the 2015-2016 drought clearly exceeded that of the 100-year events in 2005 and 2010. So, in approximately one decade, this zone has had three 100-year events. Quite astonishing.

So why was SST unable to explain the 2015-2016 drought, like it had for past events? Part of it has to do with land-use changes. That is, human changes to the land surface such as deforestation. Another part is related to warming from greenhouse gases. It is clear that land-use changes can affect drought. As farmers deforest, for instance, they convert woodlands and forests into agricultural land. This changes not only the darkness (reflectivity) of the land, but it also impacts the transfer of water to and from the atmosphere (evapotranspiration).

One might ask how warming affects droughts. As air temperatures increase, air is able to evaporate water more rapidly and dry out surfaces. At the same time, air can contain more water vapor so that when rain does occur, it is more often in heavy downpours. These two changes underlie what is referred to as an accelerated hydrological cycle. Simply put, man-made warming is accelerating the movement of water through the ecosystem, which can cause drought even if precipitation does not decrease. Warming also causes changes in the large-scale patterns of air motion (atmospheric circulation) that reduces rainfall in this region.

In the letter, the Campaign for Accountability writes, “Even today, Americans have a right to expect that those who seek and hold top government positions will not lie to their elected representatives and that if they do, the consequences will be swift and severe.”

On three separate occasions, both in written testimony and in live hearings, Mnuchin has denied that OneWest engaged in robosigning of foreclosure documents, when copious evidence exists to the contrary. Most recently, Mnuchin appears to have lied about robosigning while under oath last week in testimony before the House Financial Services Committee.

Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., confronted Mnuchin with the 2009 deposition of Erica Johnson-Seck, a OneWest vice president who admitted that her team of eight employees robosigned 6,000 affidavits a week attesting to verifying mortgage files while spending “not more than 30 seconds” reviewing the underlying material. Mnuchin replied defiantly, “I don’t think you know what robosigning is,” insisting there is no legal definition, and denied that there was any robosigning at OneWest, “for the record.”

Previously, in written answers for the record to Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., in January, in conjunction with his confirmation hearings, Mnuchin stated “OneWest did not ‘robo-sign’ documents,” and then when given a chance to clean up his answer, he maintained his denial. In fact, despite his claim last week that “robosigning is not a legal term,” Mnuchin provided such a definition to Casey, saying it referred to “(a) a signer of a foreclosure affidavit attested to facts that were not verified to be accurate; or (b) a signer of a foreclosure affidavit represented himself or herself to be someone else.”

Johnson-Seck admitted to both things. She attested to facts in foreclosure cases without verifying them in any way; in response to the question “Is it true that you don’t read each document before signing it,” she replied “That’s true.” She also represented herself as having the authority to sign documents for at least seven different financial institutions. In fact, the late Brooklyn judge Arthur Schack once threw out a OneWest foreclosure because Johnson-Seck had both assigned a mortgage to Deutsche Bank and executed an affidavit on behalf of Deutsche Bank, appearing as multiple officers in the same case.

In addition, the Columbus Dispatch found frequent instances of robosigning in Franklin County, Ohio, including three cases in 2010 where “a judge dismissed OneWest foreclosure proceedings specifically based on inaccurate robosignings.” A Reuters investigation in 2011 also alleged that OneWest issued “foreclosure documents of questionable validity.”

And a report assembled by the Florida attorney general’s office in 2010 includes a mortgage assignment signed by a representative of “IndyMac Bank,” OneWest’s predecessor, and dated July 2010, well after IndyMac closed down. The assignment was clearly “robosigned” by an employee claiming to work for IndyMac when it would have been impossible for them to do so.

None of this is surprising because it was the standard practice of every bank engaged in foreclosure operations at that time. For some reason, the campaign claims, Mnuchin doesn’t want to admit to a practice that most banks have acknowledged and paid billions of dollars in fines for.

“Sec. Mnuchin’s dissembling was shameful enough when he served as a CEO,” the Campaign for Accountability writes, “but once he began repeating this obvious untruth to Congress, Sec. Mnuchin crossed the line into potentially criminal conduct.” Indeed, it is a federal crime to commit perjury or make a “false or misleading statement” to Congress.

The Justice Department is, of course, highly unlikely to investigate Mnuchin’s statements. This is especially the case given the questionable assertions made to Congress by its leader, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, that he had not met with any representatives of Russia during the Trump campaign.

Nevertheless, the Campaign for Accountability raised the complaint because of the principle of the rule of law. In the letter they cite federal Judge Barrington Parker, who in 1977 fined CIA Director Richard Helms and gave him a suspended prison term for lying to Congress about CIA operations in Chile. “Public officials at every level, whatever their

Ex-jailer settles Pulaski County inmate's sex suit

A federal lawsuit accusing a former Pulaski County jail supervisor of repeatedly sexually assaulting a female inmate in 2014 and 2015 has been settled, canceling a jury trial that was to begin Sept. 12 before U.S. District Judge Billy Roy Wilson.

On June 2, Hazel pleaded guilty in a related criminal case, admitting he made a false statement to FBI agents who were conducting a civil-rights investigation into allegations of sexual encounters between Hazel and the woman.

In return for his guilty plea, and at the request of prosecutors, Chief U.S. District Judge Brian Miller dropped the original charge Hazel had faced, sexual abuse of a ward, for which Hazel was facing a June 12 jury trial. Hazel is now awaiting sentencing on the false-statement charge.

In the civil lawsuit, the woman accused Hazel of battery, sexual assault and wrongful imprisonment. The suit also accused Pulaski County and Sheriff Charles "Doc" Holladay of creating an atmosphere in which illegal behavior was tolerated, thereby violating their constitutional duty to protect an inmate.

However, attorneys for the woman filed a motion July 25 asking that her claims against Holladay, the county and Hazel in his official capacity be dropped.

That left only claims against Hazel in his individual capacity -- which attorneys for the woman also asked to dismiss last week, citing a settlement but offering no details. Wilson granted the motions July 26 and dismissed the case.

Attorneys Kathryn Hudson and Justin Huett of Little Rock, who represent the woman who was a federal inmate at the time, filed their motions to dismiss the defendants in lieu of filing a response to the county's July 13 statement of undisputed facts.

Union stands with Troopers

LINCOLN, Neb. As investigations into misconduct in the Nebraska State Patrol begin the union that represents State Troopers is standing behind the troopers.

The one case in particular involves trooper Tim Flick and his role in a pursuit last October that turned deadly.

His cruiser and the suspect's collided. The crash killed one person in the suspect's car.

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts Thursday released a report that outlined policy and procedure changes for the Nebraska State Patrol following an internal affairs investigation.

Chief Human Resources Officer Jason Jackson mentioned several cases of misconduct within the department but wouldn't give specific details in any of the incidents. Jackson said possible harassment, theft of ammunition allegedly by a state trooper and cases of use of force were among the issues discussed in the report.

Names were redacted in the report. Ricketts said they hoped to be as transparent as possible but didn't want to interfere with any due process. Read the full NSP report here.

Ricketts ordered the review after state patrol troopers were accused of changing their story about a high-speed chase that killed a South Dakota driver.

Ricketts announced in June that he had fired Col. Brad Rice and sent the investigation's initial findings to the FBI and the U.S. attorney's office. During Thursday's briefing, Ricketts said some of the issues with internal affairs were directly related to command interference.

Ricketts said, "In particular, I gave you the case for example with the Colonel seemingly to lead where the investigation wanted to go with his remarks."

Jackson added there were cases of misconduct that were deliberately not turned over to the crime commission. He said motives were varied, but in some cases troopers accused of misconduct resigned which relieved the patrol of the requirement to continue the investigation.

An officer involved in the rifle-butt incident in western Nebraska resigned voluntarily in advance of his final disciplinary hearing with Col. Rice. NSP has a practice of administratively closing misconduct investigations if the officer resigns before the investigation is complete. Jackson said failure to complete these investigations and report the findings to the crime commission means an officer may find employment in other jurisdictions. It's a policy the Nebraska State Patrol will change.

https://www.wheelsmag.com.au/news/1707/ ... c-cars-won’t-use-batteries

TOYOTA is reportedly working on a new generation of electric cars that will use solid-state capacitors to power themselves that can recharge much faster than conventional batteries.
Japanese news service Chunichi reported this week that Toyota planned to have the cars on sale in Japan by 2022, promising electric vehicles that can travel much further than the current generation of battery-fuelled versions, and cut top-up times to about the same as it takes to refuel a normal car.
Solid-state capacitors do not rely on liquids to store their energy. They tend to be much lighter and smaller than conventional “wet” lithium-ion batteries, and have a much higher energy density – the amount of electrical charge they can hold compared to a standard battery – and are better at storing the charge.
However, they tend to have a low power density, meaning that while they can hold a lot of charge (energy), they can’t produce much power quickly.
The carmaker is currently rolling out the Toyota New Generation Architecture – a hybrid, electric and fuel cell-ready platform – across its product range that is expected to also be compatible with solid-state batteries.
So far, only the Toyota Prius petrol-electric hybrid and the Toyota C-HR small SUV are using the new architecture, with the Corolla small car soon to roll out a new version also based on it.
Toyota also has the Mirai fuel-cell car that is built off the TNGA platform – the world’s first mass production hydrogen-fuelled car that converts the fuel to water and electricity to drive an electric motor – but the lack of refuelling infrastructure here has seen plans to launch it locally shelved.
Mazda is the only manufacturer to use a solid-state capacitor. The Mazda 6 sedan and wagon use the capacitor to store energy that’s normally wasted while braking, converting it into electricity that’s used for short periods while the car’s idle-stop system shuts down the engine to save fuel.

This is a BIG game changer folks!

Solid State Lithium-Ion & Graphene Batteries

Batteries are a big pain point in modern electronics: they take up too much space, have a finite life, lose charge over time, can be heavy , are slow to charge and can be dangerous if improperly handled. What if all these disadvantages just go away?

Toyota has been working on batteries using sulfide superionic conductors.Essentially , these batteries, if perfected will work like super capacitors, able to store huge amounts of energy in a short while. Spanish company Graphenano has been developing graphene polymer batteries that have an energy density of 1,000 Whkg (lithium batteries are about 200 Whkg). It's also purported to charge 33 times faster without retaining a memory effect. We need better batteries and these could be here by 2020.

Flint Taylor
G. FLINT TAYLOR, a graduate of Brown University and Northwestern Law School, is a founding partner of the People’s Law Office in Chicago, an office which has been dedicated to litigating civil rights, police violence, government misconduct, and death penalty cases for 45 years. Among the landmark cases that Mr. Taylor has litigated are the Fred Hampton Black Panther case; the Greensboro, North Carolina case against the Ku Klux Klan and Nazis; the Ford Heights Four case in which four innocent men received a record $36 million settlement for their wrongful conviction and imprisonment; and a series of cases arising from a pattern and practice of police torture and cover-up by former Chicago police commander Jon Burge, former Mayor Richard M. Daley, former State’s Attorney Richard Devine, and numerous other police and government officials, five of which have been settled against the City of Chicago and Cook County for a total of approximately $26 million. He obtained a multi-million dollar settlement for a seven year old boy who was falsely accused by the Chicago Police of the murder of 11 year old Ryan Harris and has represented, and continues to represent, numerous other wrongfully convicted persons who have spent decades in prison and on death row, including Burge torture victims Michael Tillman, Darrell Cannon, Ronald Kitchen, Alonzo Smith, Anthony Holmes, Victor Safforld, Shawn Whirl, and Jackie Wilson, exonerees Randy Steidl, Paul Terry, Ronald Jones, Jerry Miller, Oscar Walden, Lewis Gardner, Paul Phillips, Terrill Swift, and Jonathan Barr, and the first woman jailhouse lawyer in Illinois, Maxine Smith.

Taylor’s work in fighting against police torture in Chicago over the past 29 years has been instrumental in obtaining the conviction and imprisonment of police torture ringleader Jon Burge and the precedent setting decision that upheld the inclusion of former Mayor Richard M. Daley as a co-conspiring defendant in the Tillman civil rights case. He also worked with the movement to obtain reparations for 60 survivors of Chicago police torture. He has also represented Nanci Koschman in her case against the CPD and SAO for covering up the truth about the death of her son in order to protect the Daley family, was one of the lead lawyers in obtaining a $5 million settlement for 74 victims of illegal strip and body cavity searches by the Milwaukee Police Department, and now represents three victims of torture and abuse at the CPD’s secret interrogation site, known as Homan Square.

Taylor also played a major role in the George Jones “street files” case that uncovered the unlawful Chicago police practice of keeping one set of files to be produced to defense lawyers while maintaining another secret set of files that often contained exculpatory evidence. This case dramatically changed the criminal discovery process in Cook County and also led to the groundbreaking wrongful prosecution verdict in Jones v. City of Chicago. As a police brutality litigator, he has been instrumental in pioneering and litigating Monell pattern and practice claims against municipalities, particularly in the areas of repeater cops, police discipline, the police code of silence, and domestic violence by police officers. Taylor also played a key role in major litigation brought against the Marion Federal Penitentiary, Stateville and Pontiac prisons in the areas of unconstitutional segregation, cruel and unusual conditions of confinement, and behavior modification.

Mr. Taylor is also an accomplished appellate advocate, and successfully argued the cases of Cleavinger v. Saxner and Buckley v. Fitzsimmons before the United States Supreme Court, as well as numerous cases before Federal Circuit Courts of Appeal and the Illinois Supreme Court.

Mr. Taylor is a longtime National Lawyers Guild member, a founding editor of the Police Misconduct and Civil Rights Law Reporter, has extensively written and lectured in the field of civil rights litigation and police torture, and frequently appears on radio and television and at other public forums to discuss these topics. He has authored four law review articles on these subjects, and his articles have appeared in the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun Times, The Nation, In These Times, the Huffington Post, Truthout, and Portside.

In 1975 Mr. Taylor was honored, along with his law partner Jeffrey Haas, for his work on the Fred Hampton case by being named by the Chicago Reader as members of the “Heavy 75,”, in 1977, with Haas, as an Advocate For Our Freedom for “representing a rare breed of legal advocates who take on the contemporary Sacco and Vanzetti or Scottsboro cases,” in 1986 he was nominated for the Durfee Foundation Award for his work in “enhancing the human dignity of others through legal institutions,” and, in 1989, again with Haas, received the Citizens Alert Fighters For Justice Award. He is the 2008 recipient of the William R. Ming Jr. Award of the Cook County Bar Association, given to a lawyer “for dedication and significant contribution to the causes of civil rights and individual liberties;” and in 2009 was awarded the First Defense Legal Aid First Defender Award for his “tireless commitment to protecting the civil rights of Chicago citizens.” He was also the recipient of the National Lawyers Guild’s 2009 Ernie Goodman Award “in recognition of extraordinary achievement by a National Lawyers Guild lawyer;” the 2009 Rainbow PUSH Father to the Community Award; the 2010 Jenner and Block award from the Northwestern Center on Wrongful Convictions for his “unflagging struggle against police brutality and racial repression under color of law;” with his law partners Joey Mogul and John Stainthorp, the 2010 Chicago National Lawyers Guild Arthur Kinoy Award for their “commitment to the struggle for justice for the survivors of torture;” the 2011 SFPIF Northwestern Law School Distinguished Alumnus Award for his “outstanding commitment to public service;” with his co-counsel Locke Bowman and Alexa Van Brunt, the Independent Voters of Illinois-Independent Precinct Organization’s 2014 Legal Eagle Award; and the 2016 Nelson Algren Humanitarian Award as “a conscience in touch with humanity.”

In 2002 he was named by Chicago Magazine as one of Chicago’s “30 Toughest Lawyers;” and by his peers as a “Leading Lawyer” in 2003, and 2015, as a “Super Lawyer” in 2007, 2008, and 2009, in 2015 as a member of the “Nation’s Top One Percent” by the National Association of Distinguished Counsel, and in 2016 as a “Top Lawyer” in the Global Directory of Who’s Who.

Members of an FBI Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force arrested Hardy after someone chatted with him undercover, pretending to set him up with a teenager whom he could have sex with. The operation involved officers posting ads on websites like Craigslist.
Soon after Hardy's arrest, however, Poston learned that the head of the task force, FBI Special Agent Ken Hillman, allowed a woman he was having an affair with to participate in the investigations. Hillman met the woman, Angela Russell, after her then-husband, Emerson Russell, let the task force use property he owned to run their operations.
Angela Russell is not a trained law enforcement officer. After her involvement became public, the FBI suspended Hillman, and the task force disbanded. Hillman pleaded guilty to a charge of disclosure of confidential information in U.S. District Court last year and received a sentence of six months probation.

CNN exclusive: FBI misconduct reveals sex, lies and videotape

By Scott Zamost and Kyra Phillips, CNN Special Investigations Unit
January 27, 2011

Washington (CNN) -- An FBI employee shared confidential information with his girlfriend, who was a news reporter, then later threatened to release a sex tape the two had made.

A supervisor watched pornographic videos in his office during work hours while "satisfying himself."

And an employee in a "leadership position" misused a government database to check on two friends who were exotic dancers and allowed them into an FBI office after hours.

These are among confidential summaries of FBI disciplinary reports obtained by CNN, which describe misconduct by agency supervisors, agents and other employees over the last three years.

Read the FBI documents obtained by CNN

Child Porn Probe Leads To FBI Headquarters
Target claims inquiry is just a “misunderstanding”

JANUARY 5 2011--The government’s pursuit of suspects trafficking in child pornography recently led federal agents to a familiar address--the FBI’s Washington, D.C. headquarters, where a bureau official is the subject of an ongoing criminal probe, The Smoking Gun has learned.

The investigation by the Department of Justice’s inspector general is focusing on FBI employee Joseph Bonsuk’s receipt of nearly 80 illicit images that were e-mailed to him by an Illinois sex offender whose rap sheet includes felony convictions for bank robbery and solicitation of a minor.

Two daughters of former state and federal law enforcement official Edward Rodgers were awarded $2.319,400 yesterday, after a Denver judge and jury found that the women suffered years of abuse at the hands of their father.

The award to Sharon Simone, 45, and Susan Hammond, 44, followed testimony of Rodgers’ four daughters in person or through depositions, describing repeated physical abuse and sexual assaults by their father from 1944 through 1965.

Rodgers, 72, who became a child abuse expert after retiring from the FBI and joining the colorado Springs DA’s office, failed to appear for the trial. But in a deposition taken in March, Rodgers denied ever hitting or sexually abusing his children.

Buffalo FBI Agent Busted
Dec 10, 2012

BUFFALO, NY – A Special Agent working in the Buffalo office of the FBI is due in Eden Town Court later this month, after being arrested by New York State Police last Friday night, charged with exposing himself to a fellow motorist on the New York State Thruway.

State Police Lt. David Denz confirmed for WGRZ-TV that John A. Yervelli Jr., 48, of Lakeview, was charged with Public Lewdness, a class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to 90 days in jail.

According to Denz, a truck driver from central New York was traveling in the right lane while east bound on the Thruway near mile marker 442, between Exits 57 and 57A, when he noticed a grey minivan pull alongside him in the passing lane.

The trucker told police that when he looked down, he noticed the driver of the other vehicle (who had turned his dome light on) was not wearing pants.

“At that point the complainant stated that the driver of the minivan was exposing himself and making lewd gestures,” Denz told 2 On Your Side.

Denz says the trucker called police, who then intercepted the minivan at the Hamburg toll plaza, where the trucker also went to identify Yervelli. Denz said it appeared Yervelli was wearing pants when he was pulled over.

“He denied exposing himself,” Denz told Channel 2, but added that “inconsistencies” in the account given by Agent Yervelli lead State Police to file charges.

A source says Yervelli insisted to the trooper who pulled him over that he was attempting to relieve himself into a bottle while he was driving. However, the location where he said that occurred was within a few miles (or minutes) of the exit he was headed to, and even closer to a Thruway rest stop.

“I don’t want to give you too many spec

William Francis Pepper is a barrister in the United Kingdom and admitted to the bar in numerous jurisdictions in the United States of America. His primary work is international commercial law. He has represented governments in the Middle East, Africa, South America, and Asia. Today, Pepper represents Sirhan Sirhan, the gunman convicted in the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy in June 1968.

Bill Pepper was a friend of Martin Luther King in the last year of his life. Some years after King's death, Bill Pepper went on to represent James Earl Ray in his guilty plea, and subsequent conviction. Pepper believes that Ray was framed by the federal government and that King was killed by a conspiracy that involved the FBI, the CIA, the military, the Memphis police and organized crime figures from New Orleans and Memphis. He later represented James Earl Ray in a televised mock trial in an attempt to get Ray the trial that he never had.

He then represented the King family in a wrongful death civil trial, King family vs. Loyd Jowers and "other unknown co-conspirators." During a trial that lasted four weeks Bill produced over seventy witnesses. Jowers, testifying by deposition, stated that James Earl Ray was a scapegoat, and not involved in the assassination. Jowers testified that Memphis police officer Earl Clark fired the fatal shots. On December 8, 1999, the Memphis jury found Jowers responsible and found that the assassination plot included also "governmental agencies." The jury took less than an hour to find in favor of the King family for the requested sum of $1.00

William Pepper is heavily involved in Human Rights Law, for a time convening the International Human Rights Seminar at Oxford University, during which time individuals such as Hugo Chavez, the President of Venezuela, accepted invitations to address the seminar. He lives in the US currently -not primarily- but travels frequently to England.

Newark cop 'blacked out' when he saw man in estranged wife's room. Then he started shooting

Seventh Paterson police officer charged

Frank Toledo, 30, of Paterson, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate people’s civil rights, using excessive force, and filing a false police report before judge Katharine S. Hayden at the Newark federal courthouse on Tuesday morning.
Toledo worked with other rogue police officers – including Eudy Ramos, Jonathan Bustios, Daniel Pent, Matthew Torres – to stop and search cars without justification. They would steal cash and other valuables from the occupants of the vehicles and share it amongst themselves.

Authorities said Toledo and other officers also stopped and searched people on the streets and took their money.
The rogue police officers would file false police reports to cover up their criminal activities. For example, on Dec. 2, 2017, Toledo and Ramos stopped and arrested a person in Paterson and took $1,000 in cash. Both men split the cash and filed a false police report omitting that $1,000 was taken from the arrestee.
Toledo and the other officers coordinated their activities through text messages. In one text message, Nov. 6, 2017, Bustios wrote to Toledo, “Yo what the f— are you doing? I’m tryin’ to go mango hunting. Let’s goooo!” Mango is a code word for cash.
“Lafayette and e  18,” responded Toledo. “Meet me here.”
In another text message, Nov. 16, 2017, Toledo wrote to Bustios, “everything we do is illegal.”
Toledo also routinely used excessive
