Why won't the Department of Justice (DOJ) investigate electronic vote fraud? Is it because the DOJ and FBI have long been involved in it, themselves?
“If you did it right, no one would ever know,” said Craig C. Donsanto, head of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Election Crimes Branch, Public Integrity Section (from 1970-2010) in a July 4,1989 Los Angeles Times article about electronic voting machines and vote fraud.

Cops Around The Country Are Posting Racist And Violent Comments On Facebook
Emily Hoerner and Rick Tulsky
CHICAGO — When an armed, would-be robber backed out of a liquor store after the clerk pulled a gun on him, the surveillance video was posted on Facebook with a comment: “Should have shot him.”
Another commenter responded, “I would of pulled the trigger.”
These comments weren’t from your everyday Facebook users. They were the words of Philadelphia police officers.
Local law enforcement departments across the country have grappled with officers’ use of social media, often struggling to create and enforce policies that restrict offensive speech.
The North Charleston, SC, police department fired an officer for posting a photo of himself wearing Confederate flag underwear, days after a white supremacist killed nine black worshipers at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church just miles away. He later settled a wrongful termination suit.

The Chicago Police Department has tried unsuccessfully to fire an officer whose own commander complained of his “bigoted views.” A Facebook page called Chicago Code Blue attracted attention for inflammatory comments — such as “Every Thug Deserves a Slug” — after an officer was found guilty in the death of Laquan McDonald.
Police officers saying bigoted and racist things online has been an issue since the beginning of social media. The behavior was especially

The Officer who was previously disciplined for the offensive KKK stickers in his locker was then called to testify against my client, L.H.
While the DA chose not to ask him any questions about the racist stickers found in his locker, the fact was revealed during cross examination. The officer admitted to having the items in his locker, but said that the stickers were there because someone had put them on his locker.
The officer claimed that he didn’t throw the items away, but put them inside the locker, because another officer would have just put them back up.
He claimed it was “just a joke” among the narcotics cops.

Black, White, and Blue: Americans' Attitudes on Race and Police
SEPTEMBER 22, 2015

https://ropercenter.cornell.edu/blog/bl ... and-police

Since the events in Ferguson last summer, pollsters have exhibited a renewed interest in the relationships between race and policing. Extensive public opinion research over the last year has shown stark differences in how blacks and whites perceive the police, differences documented in survey research going back to polling conducted in response to the Kerner Commission report on the 1967 race riots. Now the Ferguson Commission report has been released, and polls provide a clear picture of areas of likely agreement and disagreement between blacks and whites on its recommendations. A review of polling on black and white attitudes on police, from the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research archives:
The Kerner Report
The police are not merely a "spark" factor. To some Negroes police have come to symbolize white power, white racism and white repression. And the fact is that many police do reflect and express these white attitudes. The atmosphere of hostility and cynicism is reinforced by a widespread belief among Negroes in the existence of police brutality and in a "double standard" of justice and protection--one for Negroes and one for whites.
National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders (The Kerner Report)
Nearly a half-century ago, the Kerner Commission pointed to white racism and economic inequality as causes of civil unrest and called for a number of reforms, including more black police officers in black neighborhoods, more training for police, an end to "abrasive" practices, and higher levels of police protection in black neighborhoods. A 1968 Harris poll investigated black and white attitudes about ideas in the report and found broad agreement about recommendations, but disagreement about causes. Strong majorities of both whites and blacks thought there should be more black police officers in black communities. Most people of both races thought the police forces were not trained properly to handle the 1967 race riots and that police should get to know black people in their cities better, although blacks were even more likely to say so. But blacks were much more likely to see a range of aspects of racial inequality as major causes of the rioting, and half of blacks thought police brutality was a major cause. Only 10% of whites agreed.

* The symbol subsequently sparked outrage when it appeared in a January 9 social media post from the Golden Valley Police Department

Content Moderation

Tue, May 9th 2023 11:57am - Mike Masnick
Content moderation at scale is impossible to do well. And, contrary to what most people believe, a huge part of content moderation is not “we have to suppress this content that scares us,” but just an attempt to “stop people from being jerks to others.” Unfortunately, too many people get confused, and think that “free speech” means they get to commandeer private property to be assholes to others, which results in confusing fights over people claiming their “free speech” is under attack when the reality is that a private property owner has decided you need to stop being an asshole.
But what if a social media network came along and just said upfront: our policy is no assholes and we’re not ashamed to say we’ll kick you out if you’re being a jackass?
As I’ve been discussing lately, I’m excited about the various new experiments with decentralized, protocol-based social media, because it allows for much more experimentation, and because it enables both services and users to opt-in to what they feel comfortable with. More competition can mean both more innovation (perhaps leading to new insights!), but also more communities trying different things and taking wildly different approaches, allowing users to

The push continues to outlaw things like end-to-end encryption, expand the government’s power to directly regulate internet communications, and otherwise make everyone more miserable (and less safe, ironically).

A Reagan Judge, The First Amendment, And The Eternal War Against Pornography

Free Speech
from the age-verification-and-free-speech dept
Fri, Oct 6th 2023 01:30pm - Corbin Barthold
Using “Protect the children!” as their rallying cry, red states are enacting digital pornography restrictions. Texas’s effort, H.B. 1181, requires commercial pornographic websites—and others, as we’ll see shortly—to verify that their users are adults, and to display state-drafted warnings about pornography’s alleged health dangers. In late August, a federal district judge blocked the law from taking effect. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit expedited Texas’s appeal, and it just held oral argument. This law, or one of the others like it, seems destined for the Supreme Court.
So continues what the Washington Post, in the headline of a 1989 op-ed by the columnist Nat Henthoff, once called “the eternal war against pornography.”

Police Militarization and the War on Citizens

When the Super Bowl rumbled into town earlier this year, our city greeted it—in true San Francisco fashion—with a weeklong party.
More than 800 SWAT deployments were conducted by 20 law enforcement agencies during 2011 and 2012, according to the ACLU’s statistical analysis.

Only this bash had rooftop snipers with assault rifles trained at revelers, hundreds of helmeted riot cops surrounding protesters, and surveillance technology reading everything from your license plate to your Twitter feed.

Rise of the Warrior Cop Paperback
Now updated with new material, the groundbreaking history of how police forces have become militarized, both in equipment and mindset, and what that means for American democracy.
The last days of colonialism taught America's revolutionaries that soldiers in the streets bring conflict and tyranny. As a result, our country has generally worked to keep the military out of law enforcement. But according to investigative reporter Radley Balko, over the last several decades, America's cops have increasingly come to resemble ground troops. The consequences have been dire: the home is no longer a place of sanctuary, the Fourth Amendment has been gutted, and police today have been conditioned to see the citizens they serve as an other-an enemy.
Today's armored-up policemen are a far cry from the constables of early America. The unrest of the 1960s brought about the invention of the SWAT unit-which in turn led to the debut of military tactics in the ranks of police officers. Nixon's War on Drugs, Reagan's War on Poverty, Clinton's COPS program, the post-9/11 security state under Bush, Obama: by degrees, each of these innovations empowered police forces, always at the expense of civil liberties. And under Trump, these powers were expanded in terrifying new ways, as evidenced by the tanks and overwhelming force that met the Black Lives Matter protesters in 2020.
In Rise of the Warrior Cop, Balko shows how politicians' ill-considered policies and relentless declarations of war against vague enemies like crime, drugs, and terror have blurred the distinction between cop and soldier. His fascinating, frightening narrative shows how over a generation, a creeping battlefield mentality has isolated and alienated American police officers and put them on a collision course with the values of a free society.

No Backup: My Life as a Female FBI Special Agent
Rosemary Dew
In her thirteen years as special agent for the FBI, Rosemary Dew worked undercover against criminals, spies, and terrorists, earning eight commendations for her service. Despite her achievements, for her entire tenure she remained the subject of severe discrimination and even sexual harassment that the bureau seemed to condone rather than condemn. In elegant and deeply felt prose, Dew argues that this climate of corruption and duplicity not only taints the experience of the FBI's few female agents but also leads directly to some of the bureau's most harmful failures, such as the remarkable intelligence breakdown that allowed spy Robert Hanssen to operate undetected for more than two decades. Narrated by one of the most successful— and one of the only—women in the bureau's history, No Backup is a startling look at the destructive and discriminatory culture that dominates one of America's most powerful agencies, as well as an impassioned plea to an organization that must reform itself.

If you think that no one is above the law, you don’t know your FBI. Written by former FBI Supervisory Special Agent Rosemary Dew, Your FBI gives voice to 15 FBI whistleblowers who dared to speak the truth about FBI wrongful and unlawful activities.—US citizens were convicted and 16 executed on false testimony and bogus science from the FBI Lab. Thousands of cases were tainted, and the FBI has not notified defendants.—The FBI routinely falsified records checks for US government security clearances and fired the whistleblower for reporting it.—A highly paid employee spent more than a year alone on an empty floor in the NY office without a computer, phone, or assignments. His sin? He reported timecard fraud.—An agent was fired for “tarnishing” the FBI’s name when she told federal prosecutors that FBI employees were stealing from 9/11 Ground Zero.—The FBI fired a whistleblower when he wouldn’t stop pointing out procurement waste, fraud, and abuse.—An agent was harassed until he retired because he stood up for a disabled war veteran.Hard to believe? That’s what the FBI’s counting on.

Lucy Parsons Labs Takes Police Foundation to Court for Open Records Requests
The University of Georgia (UGA) School of Law’s First Amendment Clinic has filed aOpen Records Request lawsuit to demand public records from the private Atlanta Police Foundation (APF). The lawsuit, filed at the behest of the Atlanta Community Press Collective and Electronic Frontier Alliance-member Lucy Parsons Labs, is seeking records relating to the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, which activists refer to as Cop City. While the facility will be used for public law enforcement and emergency services agencies, including training on surveillance technologies, the lease is held by the APF.
The argument is that the Atlanta Police Foundation, as the nonprofit holding the lease for facilities intended for use by government agencies, should be subject to the same state Open Records Act as to its functions that are on behalf of law enforcement agencies. Beyond the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, the APF also manages the Atlanta Police Department’s Video Surveillance Center, which integrates footage from over 16,000 public and privately-held surveillance cameras across the city.
