Trigger warning: Describes rape

The eXile Returns

The eXile increasingly came to represent a common thread between left and far right in geopolitical sympathy with Putin’s Russia and ruthless animosity for those they identified as neoconservatives, humorless leftists, and fussy liberals, alike.

Taibbi and Ames had parted ways in 2003, apparently on bad terms, but The eXile continued in Moscow for another five years. When Ames finally shuttered the publication, based on claims of state repression that were disputed by the eXile’s own investors, Spencer wrote the publication up as a “fantastically irreverent English-language paper” and praised Limonov as “a true fusionist, as it were.”

Hoping to help find Dolan a new job, American Conservative editor, Daniel McCarthy (aka Tory Anarchist), proclaimed, “Save the War Nerd,” calling The eXile a “samizdat” — the word for Soviet dissident publications that tracked the persecution of activists.

As the alt-right grew, its members idolized The eXile. Daryush Valizadeh (“Roosh V), a leading Men’s Rights Activist (MRA) often condemned as a “rape advocate,” described Taibbi and Ames’s book as life changing, writing, “my favorite part of the book being when they describe ladies night at the Duck Bar. It was dubbed ‘rape camp’ by the expats.”

Like Roosh V, leading MRA, Matt Forney said of Ames and Taibbi’s co-authored book, “This is honestly one of the few books I’ve read that changed my life, and one of the few I make a point to re-read once a year.” Similarly, on the alt-right Counter-Currents Radio, Forney praised Ames’s 2005 book, Going Postal, as an adequate explanation, if not justification, for Incel-style school shooters.

Since the Men’s Rights Movement helped fuel some of the most violent currents of the alt-right, The eXile’s life-changing role in the lives of two MRA leaders further illustrates its editors’ influence on modern fascism.

Within two years of The eXile’s shuttering, Dolan was able to land a new gig at the American University in Iraq-Suleimaniyah, but the university let him go after learning of hysterical rants involving an image of Ann Coulter’s face on the body of a woman being gang raped by four Arabs with the text, “Oh Annie, you little fascist flirt, you know you want it.” The university’s dean called Dolan an “academic fraud” and “oblivious to any rational distinction between the real world and his imagination.”

SWERF and TERF: The Red-Brown alliance in Policing Gender

Image

by DAPHNE LAWLESS

Late last year, a veteran of communist politics in Aotearoa/New Zealand decided to contribute to a march for the traditional working-class demand for reproductive rights by standing outside it with a sign bearing only the words “WOMAN = ADULT HUMAN FEMALE” – a dogwhistle for anti-trans feminists (or “trans-excluding radical feminists”, TERFs). Another veteran from the same organisation now has the same phrase at the head of her Twitter biography – displacing all mention of her record as a socialist and a union organiser. And they’re not the only ones. How has the motivation to punch down on trans people – and defend the “free speech” of fascists and others who do so – come to substitute for the fight for workers’ power and a post-capitalist world in the minds of veteran activists?

Trigger warning: Describes rape

Writers Matt Taibbi and Mark Ames Serviced No One But Themselves With Their 'Satire'

Image

Based on other interviews and writings by Ames and Taibbi, it could be inferred that both viewed women as a target ripe for mockery because of the power they seemingly held over men like them: “I note this to illustrate my point: that my ‘misogyny,’ if that’s the right word for it, comes not from ice-cold, cinematic antisocial tendencies, but rather, from fear. Fear and pain. Way too much fear and pain. I ain’t like those other assholes, the axle-grease-on-the-arms misogynists,” Ames wrote in “Meditations of a Misogynist” in the eXiled blog in 2003.

And in an interview with the Observer in 2000, Ames described being a “loser” who had become a “white god” in Russia. “It was the first two weeks of my life that I’d lived really,” he said of moving to Russia. “It was pretty much just fuck whoever you wanted to. It was just very epic.” (If the attitude Ames describes here is familiar, it may because similar arguments are pervasive in the Men’s Rights Activist community, a group that generally believes that feminism has gone too far.) In the same interview, Ames was open and unapologetic about his predatory behavior. “Tens of millions of people live in dire circumstances, stranded in the center of the world’s largest continent, with little hope of going anywhere,” he told the Observer. “Which means–sexual opportunity for me.”

He went on:

He spoke about his sex life in Moscow. “Russian women, especially on the first date, expect you to rape them,” said Mr. Ames. “They’ll go back home with you and say, ‘No, no, no,’ and if you’re an American, you’ve been trained to respect the ‘No,’ because you’re afraid of sexual harassment or date rape, and so you fail over and over. But it took me a while to learn you really have to force Russian girls, and that’s what they want, it’s like a mock rape. And then you come back here and you’re really freaked out–because you don’t know if that actually exists deep in all women’s psyches, that that’s what they all want. All relations between guys and girls is basically violent, I think. It’s all war.”

Ames felt safe articulating such misogynistic, violent views to a mainstream newspaper, even in 2003. But unlike the weak defense he offers for mocking women in the eXile, it’s much harder to hide behind the claim of satire in an interview. When discussing the book with journalists, by originally marketing the book as non-fiction, and repeatedly making girls and women their punchlines, it’s clear their bleak views about women actively contributed to their success as writers.

Both Ames and Taibbi have denied committing any of the violent, demeaning acts they depicted. But unlike Weinstein and other alleged predators, their apparent crime is not physical, then, it’s an intellectual one—what do we do with men who have, for years, profited by promoting misogyny and violence against women, and what do we want from them now?

Listen to Conference-Goers at Trump Resort Chant for “War!”

Speakers at a pro-Trump conference urged attendees to “go to war” for the president and laughed about beating up classmates. It’s the same conference where a video of a fake Trump shooting members of the media played.

Image
Pastor Mark Burns delivers a speech at the 2016 Republican National Convention. Burns was a speaker last weekend at the Trump National Doral Miami resort, where he repeatedly urged the crowd to go to “war” in support of Trump.

“We’ve come to declare war!” Pastor Mark Burns told the crowd three times in the Donald J. Trump Grand Ballroom. Conference-goers roared back: “War! War!”

Burns went on: “Do I have anybody who is ready to go to war for Donald J. Trump, for this nation? I can’t hear you? Anybody? Ready to go to war! Because we’re citizens of the greatest country in the world!” The audience cheered.

Hyperpartisan rhetoric, including references to violence, has become a staple of the president’s campaign and his supporters. Trump himself has egged on crowds with nods to violence.

In response to questions, Burns said he does not endorse violence: “Me talking about going to war for Donald Trump is simply a call to action for Republicans to be verbal in support of our conservative values and support for this president.”

Later during the conference, radio host Wayne Allyn Root proudly recalled punching classmates as one of the few white students at his predominantly black high school. A “kid comes up to me and I knock him unconscious. Second kid, a week later, I knocked his entire front row of teeth out. He’s on the floor going ‘where are my teeth, where are my teeth,’” Root told the crowd. “My buddies and I were high-fiving and laughing. Man, it was funny.”

Root then connected the beatings to politics: “To win in politics, which is the roughest game in the world, you’ve got to be a natural-born killer. Not a wallflower. You’ve got to be a pitbull.”

We recorded the comments at the conference as part of our “Trump, Inc.” reporting project and podcast.

Asked for comment, Root said he was simply defending himself. “I don’t recommend violence to anybody, ever,” he said. Asked by whom he was attacked, Root said it was “black students and Italian rough students.”

Burns and Root have both long campaigned in support of Trump. Burns gave the benediction on the first day of the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland, for which he drew criticism for referring to Democrats as “the enemy.” Root also campaigned for Trump during the last election, saying he looked forward to supporters taking over the capital with “pitchforks, jack hammers and blowtorches.” (The Trump campaign declared Roots’ comments “completely unacceptable.”)

About a thousand people attended last weekend’s American Priority Festival and Conference. It drew many speakers from the president’s orbit, including Trump Jr., Sanders and former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, as well as former Trump campaign aide and now-felon George Papadopoulos.

In between sessions, men milled about wearing shirts popular with the extreme right-wing group Proud Boys. One of the shirts read, “Yamaguchi did nothing wrong.” Otoya Yamaguchi was a Japanese ultranationalist who murdered the head of Japan’s socialist party. The back of the shirt shows an image of the killing.

I have to give the inhabitants of the “Gender Critical” subreddit credit for one thing: they are endlessly creative in coming up with new ways to be assholes.

The Talmud: Degenerate?

“Degenerate” was a favorite term of opprobrium for the Nazis, who used it to vilify everything in the culture that made them uneasy, from modern art to jazz music — all of which, naturally, they blamed on the Jews.

How Deep Does the Rabbit Hole Go?
The “Wonderland” of r/TheRedPill and Its Ties to White Supremacy

Image
"Really, Guys": Manosphere meme collected by David Futrelle at We Hunted the Mammoth,
http://www.wehuntedthemammoth.com/2015/ ... -ironwood/

The violation of a “natural order” based in biological determinism in regard to race and sex is a core argument used in far-right circles, including the Manosphere, to justify their beliefs. And although they share many similarities in regard to the superiority of men over women, grouping the Manosphere and the alt right under the same umbrella is insufficient to understand the crux of their ideologies and the arguments they use to support them. The Manosphere often invokes a nostalgic remembrance of a past before feminism “tainted” women, just as white supremacist rhetoric in other parts of the alt-right also invokes this kind of nostalgic remembrance of a past that was white and patriarchal. However, in terms of how directly connected the Manosphere is to white supremacy, one piece of “literature” that r/TheRedPill uses to support their ideological beliefs about women and “hypergamy” comes directly from The Occidental Quarterly, a known white nationalist/white supremacist academic journal funded by the Charles Martel society (Southern Poverty Law Center n.d.). The Occidental Quarterly helps to blast open a gateway from r/TheRedPill to white supremacy and/or white nationalism. What r/TheRedPill and its affiliated subreddits and websites has demonstrated through publications like these is that the rabbit hole goes deeper than sexual strategy.

Hypergamy, in particular, is a concept that highlights the ways the misogynistic discourse of the Manosphere and the white supremacist movement (in particular, the alt right) are connected. Devlin, the author of the piece, begins an article by stating that “white birthrates worldwide have suffered a catastrophic decline in recent decades,” (see figure 1), and goes on to explain why hypergamy is the reason why. Specifically, hypergamy is defined as a sexual and romantic drive to be with the “Alpha Male,” regardless of current relationship status. In other words, women will instinctively seek out the most attractive, successful, or powerful man in a group to have sexual or romantic relations with, and this “hypergamy” drives women to only “mate at the top.” Devlin goes on to say that the sexual revolution of the 1960s shifted culture to be a “female sexual utopia,” and that this brought upon a new cultural norm where women had sexual rights, leading to the downfall of “white birthrates” and “Western civilization.” In sum, the article states that it is not only hypergamy that is responsible for this downfall, but that women having sexual and reproductive freedom is the cause of all of the modern day white man’s woes—sexually, romantically, economically, and culturally. Pointing to all of these collapses of a patriarchal, white, masculine world as the reason for the discontent of “Western civilization”, the concept of hypergamy is easily transportable across these extremist groups and easily embraced.
