Freedom to Bash Heads

You are cordially invited to have a civil discussion with the Proud Boys

Underneath all the First Amendment rhetoric at the Patriot Prayer events is a pretty unambiguous agitprop agenda—namely to create a combustible, violent situation that can be blamed on the “radical left.” Why else even hold such a rally in downtown Portland?

By contrast, the loss of “civility” that conservatives and centrists bemoan as liberals exercise their free-speech rights—the owner of the Red Hen restaurant politely rejecting Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ patronage, residents of Martha’s Vineyard purportedly turning Alan Dershowitz into a social pariah—seems quaint and frankly ridiculous when a growing sector of right-wing activism now is devoted to provoking street fights.

It’s a cynical con. Alt-right guru Richard Spencer admitted as much recently during an interview, where he was asked by a fellow white nationalist, regarding their ability to maintain public internet platforms: “Are we even pro-free speech?” To which Spencer replied: “No, of course not,” adding that they “have to use this platform” to be “radically pragmatic.”

Of course, the Proud Boys and their founder and president McInnis insist they are not white nationalists, they are not alt-right, and they are not about violence. In a piece at the group’s website titled “We Are Not Alt-Right,” McInnes—a cofounder of the Vice media empire—declares: “We are not a violent group. We don’t start fights but we will finish them. The violence you see in the media is us defending ourselves from lunatics who want us dead for no discernible reason.”

But the Proud Boys’ Twitter feed tells a very different story. After the rally, it featured a nonstop series of clips and gifs from videos showing Proud Boys beating the crap out of antifascists. Nordean’s flattening of the baton-wielding antifascist was a particular favorite.

Indeed, that brutal assault drew so much admiring attention from thuggish right-wingers that McInnes invited Nordean onto his popular online show Get Off My Lawn, after replaying the video multiple times, including slo-mo and musical-soundtrack versions. McInnes hailed it as “the turning point in the war against antifa,” and told Nordean that “I honestly think that that knockout is a pivot in the movement, it marks the beginning of the end of antifa, and the beginning of being safe and proud to be Trump.”

“These guys were ready to fight, they’d had enough,” McInnes explained.

Jason Wilson, a reporter for The Guardian, contacted McInnes to ask about the violence at the rally. McInnes fumed at him: “You would have to be completely blind, which I think you are, to not see that fight for what it is, which is antifa fully armed attacking Joey Gibson and Joey Gibson’s friends.”

When Wilson asked him whether sharing the video widely and promoting it also promoted violence, McInnes called him a “fucking weak human being,” a “vile little pussy,” and a “tepid cunt,” then ranted about “the media class” who “sit there picking fights, call everyone a Nazi, and then when someone dares defend themselves, and someone else says ‘yay’, you say ‘well you’re promoting violence.’”

At that point, McInnes hung up.

So once more: what was all that about civility?

Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes and a men's rights activist spent an entire show attacking Black women

Tommy Sotomayor is a men’s rights activist with a record of making anti-Semitic comments, including on David Duke’s show

CRISTINA LóPEZ G.

Image

Gavin McInnes, the founder of the violent, fraternal men-only organization Proud Boys, devoted the July 16 episode of his CRTV show Get Off My Lawn to criticizing Black women, starting with Beyoncé. McInnes, whose misogyny is well-documented, also brought on Black men’s rights activist Tommy Sotomayor to avoid sounding “too white” in his critique. Sotomayor has built an online punditry career by bashing Black women and Jewish people.

McInnes kicked off the discussion by falsely claiming that the targeted harassment campaign that far-right troll Milo Yiannopoulos led on Twitter against actress Leslie Jones was evidence of “Black women potentially being “double protected” in America. According to McInnes, the fact that Yiannopoulos was permanently banned from Twitter as a consequence showed that the platform was being deferential to Jones because she’s Black and a woman. McInnes’ revisionist history conveniently ignores the fact that Black women tend to be targets of online harassment at higher rates than white social media users.

Sotomayor, whose real name is Thomas Jerome Harris, has built his internet presence around making inflammatory attacks against women, the Black community, and Jewish people. Sotomayor once said that then-President Barack Obama “shouldn’t try to ban guns, he should ban niggas.” The video was embraced and amplified by then-CNN pundit Harry Houck, who has a long history of repeatedly suggesting African-Americans are prone to criminality and are to blame for the police violence of which they are victims. Sotomayor also once referred to Black Lives Matter protesters as the “retarded kids in the class.” He hosted former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke on now-deleted YouTube livestreams, and appeared on Duke’s podcast to discuss “the destruction of the black community due to the cultural pollution that is being spewed out by the Jewish media elite.” One of Sotomayor’s discussions with Duke was even featured on the neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer.

Sotomayor is also a recognized men’s rights activist whose anti-feminist punditry has been amplified by the misogynistic website A Voice For Men. In a since-deleted YouTube video, Sotomayor once took issue with a toilet paper ad that gave a “poignant salute” to single mothers on Father’s Day, claiming it showed that Hollywood was taking “aim, just like everyone else, at the American male.” An archived page of several of his now-deleted videos shows pejorative language and critical commentary about Black people.

On his website, Sotomayor lists a number of YouTube channels as his own. He once explained that he has many channels because YouTube users keep flagging his content and “every video I put up, they take it down.” Sotomayor’s comment demonstrates just another way extremists circumvent YouTube’s weak attempts at dealing with hate speech.

On McInnes’ Get Off My Lawn, Sotomayor enthusiastically enabled McInnes as he bashed Black women, agreeing with him that they are prone to violence and calling them “irresponsible being[s]” who are raising children with “100 percent autonomy” and making them violent as well.

In an attempt to demonize Black mothers, Sotomayor shared an anecdote of a woman who had put a “sew-in weave” in her child’s hair, claiming “a normal person, a white woman” called his show saying that if she had “bleached” her 4-year-old’s hair, the school would’ve sent child protective services to her house. “It goes back to, again, no father,” Sotomayor claimed. “If a father’s there, he’s not even going to let his child dress up in this whore’s outfit.”

Sotomayor also complained that President Donald Trump hasn’t done enough in terms of “cutting off the welfare,” claiming it is financially incentivizing people to have “children … in bad situations.” He bizarrely suggested that aiding single mothers and “all these rape cases that are coming up” were evidence of the way men are being mistreated in America.

What I Overheard at London's Men's Rights Conference

From "feminist witch hunts" to a bunch of speakers arguing that men have it worse than women.

As a rule of thumb, the more overtly political the speaker, the closer they came to outright misogyny. At one low point, an Austrian political activist presented his "red pill" political platform, calling for compulsory paternity testing at birth (in general, the men's rights movement is obsessed with cuckolding) and acknowledging common ground with white nationalists. Most attendees watching on shook their heads as he spoke.

Many of the MRA speakers there seemingly came to the movement not after being influenced by dogma, online or off, but off the back of some heavy personal ordeal. Of course, it wasn't possible to say whether all these stories were entirely true—or at least whether the men were blameless—but most sounded fairly harrowing nonetheless.

One speaker, for instance, had been implicated in a lurid child sex abuse case, thrown out after the CPS ruled the accuser unreliable. On the other end of the scale, another gave a rambling presentation on the "feminist witch hunt," which had driven him from his job at the University of Oxford; it even included a weird spider-diagram naming individual feminists and detailing how they had wronged him.

Maybe it's this intense emotional involvement that allows newcomers to swallow the wider dictum around men being the oppressed sex, something that flies in the face of popular evidence. Take domestic violence: It would be silly to deny that men experience domestic violence at all (including from male perpetrators, of course)—but to claim that men are somehow the biggest victims (either in numbers alone or by getting a rougher ride from the system) requires a real warping of reality.

The Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers: Two controversial groups involved in major protests

Gavin McInnes, the founder of the Proud Boys, specifically addressed the differences between the Oath Keepers and his group, saying the Oath Keepers "are almost PC."

"These guys are very, very careful about any Jewish s---. They won't go to the same rally if someone who's anti-Semitic's going to be there. They're the [Social Justice Warriors] of the fringe right, as they're called," McInnes said in a video posted on his group's website.

Who are the Proud Boys?
According to McInnes, who was one of the co-founders of Vice Media before leaving the organization years ago, the Proud Boys are a "multi-racial group made up of straight guys -- there're some homos in there, there are plenty of Jews. The only pre-requisite is that you're a dude -- born a dude -- and you accept the West as the best," he said in a video posted on their group's website.

Image
The alt-right leader and former co-founder of Vice Magazine Gavin McInnes attends an Act for America rally to protest sharia law on June 10, 2017 in Foley Square in New York City.

A sticking point for the group that identifies as "Western chauvinists" is the colloquial understanding of chauvinism as being sexist. They interpret the word with the traditional definition which means someone who is aggressively patriotic.

"Yes we're chauvinist. Chauvinist doesn't mean sexist. Chauvinist means extremely patriotic," Mcinnes said, adding that "we're mostly pro-Trump."

Ibrahim Hooper, the communications director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said that groups including both the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers have seen their presences grow in the wake of Trump.

"What we have seen in recent years is that convergence between Islamaphobic groups and racist and white supremacist groups," Hooper told ABC News.

"All of these groups have been empowered and emboldened with the rise of Donald Trump both as candidate and as president, in our opinion," he said.

One distinction that the group makes an effort to distinguish themselves from is neo-Nazis, and in larger part they argue that they are not racist.

Image
Alt-Right, Proud Boy, and Patriot Prayer members staged a Freedom and Courage rally and march in Portland, Oregon on June 30, 2018.

In a video titled "We Don't Let Nazis in Proud Boys," McInnes says that he "danced around" the idea of allowing Nazis, who he says exist in far fewer numbers than publicized, into his group for two reasons: "the Jews and the blacks."

He says in the video: "I don't mind talking about Jews...but you can't stop talking about it but why are you so obsessed with Hitler. He's one guy. You don't hear people talking about Stalin or Mao all the time."

The "bigger" reason for separating themselves from Nazis is, he says, in defense of the black men who join the Proud Boys, who he says have had to make a concerted effort to get out of the "mass conformity that black people push on each other" which he says relates to the belief "that America is a racist hellhole."

"When a chosen one wanders through the desert and ends up with us, I'm in no way allowing him to feel uncomfortable in this last little vestige of sanity where we encourage western chauvinism," McInnes says.

While the group themselves draws a line, Beirich notes that the "Proud Boys have shown up at events that feature a lot of white supremacists," and adds that "the thing about them is [that they participate in] street fighting, which is kind of shocking."

One thing they don't deny being is violent.

Inside Incels’ Looksmaxing Obsession: Penis Stretching, Skull Implants And Rage

For radical incels, dating and sex are rife with emasculating injustice. They believe that any woman — regardless of looks — can find someone to have sex with, while an ugly man can get sex only by force or by paying. They also believe that women are interested exclusively in good-looking men.

This distorted view of women fuels violent resentment. On Incels.me, one of the more extreme incel forums that has hosted more than 1 million messages in less than a year, men routinely argue that violence against women is justified because women deny unattractive men their “right” to sex.

“Women and society have dejected us into loneliness and depression. Their obsession with looks has driven many of us who don’t fit their standards to anger and homicidal tendencies. This is not the result of mental illness, it is a normal response to prejudiced behavior,” one member wrote in April. “What’s the incentive for incels (ugly men) to follow YOUR social rules, when our actions, good or bad, will never be rewarded?” he asked. “Why NOT shoot up that sorority full of girls that teased you?”

Elliot Rodger, a 22-year-old self-proclaimed incel who killed himself and six other people in 2014, is hailed as an inspiration in incel forums. The day before his rampage in Isla Vista, California, he uploaded a video to YouTube titled “Retribution” which detailed his plan to “slaughter every spoiled, stuck-up, blonde slut” he could find in a nearby sorority house.

“If I can’t have you girls, I will destroy you,” he said in the video. “You will finally see that I am in truth the superior one, the true alpha male.”

Posts from men who say they dream of “going ER” ― a reference to Rodger’s attack ― are common in incel and looksmax forums. Since his killings, there have been other, similar attacks, including one in April this year when a man rammed a van into a crowd of pedestrians in Toronto, killing eight women and two men. The suspect, 25-year-old Alek Minassian, wrote a post on Facebook shortly before the massacre, declaring the “Incel Rebellion has already begun!” and vowing to “overthrow all the Chads and Stacys” ― an incel reference to good-looking men and women.

After a gunman killed a woman and a 10-year-old girl this Sunday in Toronto, incel message boards lit up with excitement that it was possibly the work of a fellow incel. Police have yet to identify a possible motive.

Anders Breivik, a far-right Norwegian terrorist who killed 77 people in 2011 when he was 32, also expressed violent misogyny and obsessed over his looks, reportedly undergoing cosmetic surgery on his forehead, nose and chin before the attack.

Other recent mass murderers held up as misogynist “heroes” by incel communities include George Sodini, who killed three people and himself in a 2009 attack at a women’s aerobics class in Pennsylvania; Seung-Hui Cho, who killed 32 people in Virginia in 2007 after reportedly stalking two women; and Marc Lépine, who separated male and female students at a Montreal engineering school in 1989 and opened fire, killing 14 women.

By comparison, zero women have gone on murderous rampages inspired by rejection. As reporter Lux Alptraum wrote on the website Splinter earlier this year, “‘Unfuckable’ Women Don’t Go on Killing Sprees.”

Neo-Nazi Leader Harold Covington Died A Coward

Image

Harold’s brother Ben Covington said that Harold exaggerated details about his time in Rhodesia. “In different blogs and writings, he was always bragging, ‘Oh, I was a mercenary in Rhodesia and I went out and did all this fighting,'” Ben said.

This was entirely typical of Harold. He even lied about a grade school fight that he turned into his Neo-Nazi origin story. According to Ben, Harold would tell “a story about when he had his great racial epiphany,” which was when two or three black students cornered him in the bathroom. “According to him, the black kids were up to thuggery and he, bravely, of course, grabbed a Pepsi bottle, smashed it, and fought his way out, bloodying his foes and covering himself in glory,” Ben told the SPLC.

“He learned from this, of course, that he could stand up righteously and defend himself as a free white man.”

In reality, Harold, when confronted by these students after “mouthing off” to them in the school courtyard, never smashed a bottle and fought back. Instead he urinated in his pants, forcing their parents to pick him up from school. Their father called the principal, but when the principal was adamant that Harold was at fault, their father told Harold that “if he was going to get into a fight, then do so, but if he was going to just shoot his mouth off and then act like a coward, then he got what he deserved.”

And Harold’s troubles didn’t end there. For years he fought with their parents, refusing their help in getting into a university in the U.S. because he had his heart set on the University of South Africa in Cape Town. At the time, South Africa was ruled by a brutal apartheid regime, which likely explains this choice. In the ’80s he moved to Ireland to manage a bookstore with his father’s financial backing. The bookstore floundered and shut down.

He married an Irish woman named Louise and had two children. He was still dependent on his father’s money as he was unable to gain Irish citizenship or find gainful employment. He moved his family to the Isle of Man and purchased a house with money sent from his father, but was warned that he would eventually have to find a real job to support his wife and children. Eventually he decided to move back to the United States, but his father refused to pay for this.

As Ben recalled, their father told Harold he was not going to “foot the bill for you to come back to Raleigh to take up your life as a Nazi.”

Their father eventually offered to pay for Harold and his family to fly to the states, on the condition they live somewhere east of the Mississippi. Harold refused, which was the last straw for his father who finally stopped subsidizing his son’s lifestyle. Ben said that Harold “cut and ran,” abandoning his wife and children and cleaning out their bank account. He moved back to the U.S. to take up his life as a Nazi, and founded the National Socialist White People’s Party (NSWPP) in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

In that time span he would send his father letters and cards accusing him of ruining his life and depriving him of his family. He baselessly claimed that his father murdered his mother, who passed away in 1984. Ben called this “delusional,” and pointed out that their mother was a two-time cancer survivor with heart arrhythmia.

Eventually Harold founded the Northwest Front and settled out west, as he initially refused to do when asked by his father. He advocated for “racial migrants” to settle and eventually take over a large portion of the United States. According to the NF’s FAQ section, “If you refrain from shooting up restaurants with an automatic rifle, if you blend in, pay your bills, make friends and show people you are a normal human being, you won’t have much trouble with the locals [in the northwest U.S.].”

From 2010 until his death he hosted a podcast called Radio Free Northwest, which was hosted on the website Radio Aryan alongside shows like Grandpa Lampshade’s Thoughts of the Day, Sven Longshanks’ The Daily Traditionalist, and Dennis Wise’s Truth Will Out Radio.

For a time the program was co-hosted by Corinna Burt, a body builder who had a brief stint in the adult industry, under the alias “Axis Sally.” By 2013 she had left white nationalism behind, and, in an interview with the SPLC, explained that Covington’s goal was “to get a thousand alpha Aryan males to move to his neighborhood and then basically just start shooting everyone who isn’t white.”

Indeed, Burt painted a portrait of a man who was unstable and paranoid. He “called nearly everyone in the [white supremacist] movement a homosexual,” was petrified of the thought that black men wanted to rape him, and his apartment was “filthy” with “layers of grime” on the walls. In her words, Covington was “pretty much the most horrible person ever.”

His final years were spent making YouTube videos and podcasts for NF, much of which failed to gain traction even among other white nationalists. In the age of the alt-right, troll storms, racist memes, and torch marches, Harold’s influence had waned to practically nothing. When he was in the news, it was for calling Dylann Roof’s Charleston bloodbath “a preview of coming attractions” and speculating that The Right Stuff’s Mike Enoch was secretly Jewish.

He had already alienated his family, turning his back on his parents, brother, wife, and children. His kids, after reading about Harold online, decided they wanted nothing to do with him. White nationalists who once supported him had abandoned him over his paranoid belief that everyone else in the movement was compromised or out to get him.

Even Occidental Dissent’s Brad Griffin wrote that Harold “was a difficult person to get along with” and “clashed over the years with nearly everyone in the White Nationalist movement.”

I had only ever written about this curmudgeonly racist once, but decided that he didn’t seem important enough to merit further attention. Looking back I stand by that calculation. His brother Ben probably summed it up the best, however, stating that “the bottom line here is that my brother is a coward. He has always been a coward and he will die a coward.” On July 14, 2018, Harold Armstead Covington died a coward at the age of 64. He will not be missed.

WE ARE NOT AFRAID: CHILEAN FEMINISM RISES IN THE FACE OF FASCIST ATTACKS

Image

On July 25, 2018, 50,000 feminists and supporters of free and legal abortion on demand filled the streets of Santiago, Chile, which still remains illegal in the country. The march commemorated the 5th Anniversary since feminists took over the main Catholic Cathedral during a special mass presided by the Chilean Archbishop in honor of San Santiago with bishops, the mayor, and other government officials present. The event was the first feminist toma (occupation) and marked a turning point in the Chilean feminist movement that, since 2013, has blossomed into a mass movement impacting political spaces and debates throughout the country.

The feminist movement has been slowly gaining ground across Latin America. In Uruguay, after years of struggle, abortion before 12 weeks was legalized in 2012. Chile, until recently, along with El Salvador, had the strictest abortion laws not allowed under any circumstances; a policy put in place in 1989 by the Pinochet regime. In August 2017, the Chilean Congress approved a bill allowing abortion only under three conditions: if the woman’s life is in danger, if the fetus cannot survive, or in the case of rape for girls 14-years-old and under. In Argentina, feminists are on the verge of possibly seeing abortion legalized, pending an August 8 vote by the Argentine Senate.

In an article by Alondra Carrillo, a vocera (spokesperson) for the Coordinadora Feminista 8 de Marzo, she wrote, “For some years, a specter haunts the world and in this occasion, it is the specter of feminism.” Carrillo is right. The specter of feminism is growing and the decline of patriarchy’s hold and power is being challenged in real-time. As a system of power is being confronted, the tantrums and violence by those losing political and economic control begin to be felt.

In reaction to the growth and impact of the feminist movement, a group of fascist pro-patriarchal men called the Social Patriotic Movement describes themselves as a nationalist organization that is opposed to the legalization of abortion and the “ideology of gender.” Their spokesperson, Pedro Kuntsman, stated that the organization accepts gay men because it is not their business what people do in bed, but described feminists as hembras (referring to female animals) that should be sterilized. Several hundred male members of this fascist organization mobilized to block the feminist march, covered the street with animal blood, and physically attacked demonstrators, including stabbing three women. While we are grateful that no one lost their lives, we stand alongside feminists and supporters who march today against the fascist attack.

Following the incident, Chilean feminists filled their social media pages with images of their march stating: “We are not afraid.” They will not be frightened by the fascist attacks nor by the apathy of the police as they watched on as women were being stabbed. The feminist movement understands that while demands are being made for new laws, the struggle for feminism is on the ground, in the streets, in the workplaces, and in the neighborhoods.

There will be no turning back! The specter of feminism is here to change the world.

A Toxic ‘Brotherhood’: Inside Incels’ Dark Online World

The nearly 6,900 members of Incels.me have exchanged well over a million messages since the website’s creation in November. Many are strikingly similar to those written by Rodger and other misogynists-turned-terrorists, and focus on one fantasy in particular: Vengeance.

Typical posts on the forum describe not only a desire to have sex with women but also to hurt, humiliate, control and punish them.

“I don’t see women as human. All they are, or should be, is slaves to men. Cook, clean, and spreading legs when they’re told to,” one member of Incels.me, who says he is 25 years old, wrote in April. “Let’s start beating women again.”

Proud Boys Bow Out of Planned Berkeley Rally After Heat Gets Turned Up
July 27, 2018 Idavox

Image

If there is anything conservatives try to avoid like the plague, it’s direct confrontation with Black people. The neo-Fascist group is in their crosshairs in the Bay Area, and that’s a problem for them.

BERKELEY, CA – A planned Aug. 5 rally by the neo-Fascist group the Proud Boys has been canceled with the group days after someone witness say was one of their members was seen in a video getting pummeled by participants in a vigil for a Black woman who was stabbed to death by a White man who news sources say is also a suspected member of the group.

According to a recent tweet, the Proud Boys are blaming the media for attempting to paint the Aug. 5 rally as a response t0 the protests decrying the murder of Nia Wilson, 18, who on Sunday, along with her sister Lahtifa, 26, was attacked by a man as they were changing trains at the Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) MacArthur Station, stabbing Nia and injuring Lahtifa. A White man, John Lee Cowell, 27, was arrested after a one-day manhunt, and police have not ruled out the possibility that it was racially motivated.

Alt-right internet mobs are attacking celebrities with their own jokes. The irony is stark.

Shock humor fueled the alt-right — and now it’s using outrage over shock humor to take people down online.

By Todd VanDerWerff and Aja Romano Jul 27, 2018, 11:00am EDT

Image
James Gunn.

The Gamergate movement turned trolls into organized activists

The most famous example of a modern post-trolling internet mob is probably the Gamergate movement, as its “success” gave many on the extreme right a template for how to attack their perceived enemies. Gamergate began in 2014 as a backlash against feminist game developer Zoe Quinn and a Kotaku journalist with whom she had a personal relationship. It then evolved into a widespread movement aimed at targeting feminist gamers and progressive gaming journalism at large.

Members of Gamergate worked under the guise of restoring “ethics in journalism” — but really, they used that so-called mission as an excuse to intensely harass individual feminists and journalists. They also used it to appeal to companies that advertised on websites that wrote critically about their behavior, in occasionally successful attempts to get the advertisers to withdraw their financial support.

The spark that lit the powder keg of Gamergate involved a blog post written by Quinn’s ex-boyfriend — and it deployed a tactic that would ultimately become a standard form of trolling used by the alt-right. He basically publicized a litany of private details about their lives in an attempt to paint Quinn as a manipulative abuser, citing “evidence” culled from private chats, texts, and emails. Context was stripped away from the exchanges, twisting their meaning to build a specific narrative around Quinn.

This shaming of Quinn was soon labeled “Gamergate,” and rapidly coalesced into a much bigger movement that started among the gamers who initially rallied around Quinn’s ex. They used the private details shared in his blog post as an excuse to harass Quinn, her supporters, and the aforementioned Kotaku writer — because simply being connected to Quinn, in the eyes of Gamergate, made the writer an unethical journalist whose bias toward Quinn and feminists like her was indicative of the broader corruption of games journalism at large.

The actual content of the so-called “damning evidence” against Quinn didn’t matter; what mattered was that it gave the mob a reason to harass her. They saw her as a “social justice warrior” who advocated for progressive politics, feminism, and diversity in gaming; by crying corruption and trying to ruin her career, their intent was to stop what they perceived as a threat to game culture.

The methods deployed in this ground-zero Gamergate event have since become standard practice for internet mobs wishing to attack seemingly anyone they believe to be a foe. We saw then with Quinn, as we’re seeing with Gunn and Harmon and other figures now, that the larger context of whatever “incendiary” material is on offer — be it a private text message or an old tweet — has been stripped away. And in the minds of the mob, it’s irrelevant anyway, because the outrage is performative rather than sincere.

Essentially, Gamergate systematized a form of online harassment that involved close-reading ancient chats and private messages, as well as public content and social media activity, in search of anything that could be used as fodder for righteous indignation.

Since 2014, this “manufactured outrage” approach has led to the firing of multiple game developers and staffers at game companies (with the latest example happening just a few weeks ago). It’s simultaneously diabolical and simple: Greatly exaggerate your enemies’ behavior while removing, distorting, or ignoring the context surrounding it.

And there’s an ironic twist to the way this tactic is being used today against the alt-right’s chosen enemies. The thing the group is now being performatively outraged about — shock humor — is arguably the foundation of its entire culture.

Incel: “Women should not be allowed out without a man”

Image
Uh oh! This one’s escaping!

By David Futrelle

On Incels.me, a hangout for some of the internet’s most hopeless involuntary celibates, one young fellow has come up with a simple yet ingenious answer to the Woman Question — that question being “why do these women keep having sex with guys other than the angry woman-hating weirdos who populate sites like Incels.me?”

Jordan Peterson: Reactionary Guru and Accidental Incel Intellectual

The famous psychologist and self-help author advocates standing up straight, maintaining social hierarchies, and enforcing monogamy.

Image

I continued watching and taking notes. But the rest of Peterson’s performance followed suit; self-evident advice like “compare yourself to who you were yesterday” or “treat yourself like you’re someone you care about” would be peppered with neo-McCarthyist rhetoric and social Darwinism. Toward the end, the man was ranting about the superiority of Western culture like some washed up white nationalist. The entire presentation could be summarized by the following quote from journalist Nora Loreto:

“Peterson cloaks his anti-progressive opinions in folksy, common-sense advice. He is a master at inventing an enemy and offering young men a solution to various straw men. Peterson has perfectly tailored his self-help style to the individual, no doubt a holdover from his days as a clinical psychologist, which he mentions a lot when he talks.”

To further clarify his reactionary worldview, Peterson has accused the Left of “weaponizing compassion.” Of course this is a doltish oxymoron straight out of The Onion, but it is also a bit hypocritical, since Peterson’s androcentric language and influence could readily be used to weaponize male supremacy.

The general public became quickly aware of the term “incel” after Alek Minassian killed ten people in a terrorist attack in Toronto last April. The label is a portmanteau of “involuntary” and “celibate,” and members of this movement have been described as “male supremacist[s][…]who believe women should be treated as sexual objects with few rights.”

In a scathing New York Times exposé, Nellie Bowles interviewed Peterson in his Toronto home. When asked about the aforementioned atrocity, this highly credentialed academic said, “He was angry at God because women were rejecting him. The cure for that is enforced monogamy. That’s actually why monogamy emerges.”

In addition, during the same interview, Peterson stated, “The people who hold that our culture is an oppressive patriarchy, they don’t want to admit that the current hierarchy might be predicated on competence,” and, in a Vice interview, waxed profound when asking, “Can men and women work together in the workplace?” He later added, “How about no makeup in the workplace?”

Upon discovering these statements I realized that, in addition to class hierarchies, Peterson espouses another hierarchical concept: patriarchy. He even seems to inadvertently side with the incels. I still wondered about his views regarding racial hierarchies, but this (along with other observations) was sufficient evidence that lobsters would be utterly ashamed of the psychologist in question.

Toxic masculinity is already an entrenched aspect of the Western culture this man holds in such high regard. For those who espouse this destructive outlook as a latent and unquestioned tendency, Peterson is preaching to the choir. He is simply telling them what they want to hear, dressing his message in the garb of academic jargon, redundant axioms (e.g. “Endless failure is not good.”), and recycled reactionary anti-communism.

As a public figure, Peterson’s style, rhetoric, and avid fan base are comparable to a combination of Dr. Atkins, L. Ron Hubbard, and Joseph McCarthy. Despite his name-dropping of psychoanalysts of yore, these are his true predecessors. Jordan Peterson is simply a bitter and paranoid huckster, attempting to protect and maintain his position of privilege while selling as many books as possible. But, due to the particular ultra-traditionalist framing of his subject matter, this pursuit of fame and fortune might not be harmless.

On Fox & Friends, Jordan Peterson warns that far-left "ideologues" are infiltrating education beginning at elementary schools

Peterson: “Women’s studies and ethnic studies … are pseudo-disciplines” that are “corrupting the rest of the enterprise”

Video MEDIA MATTERS STAFF

STEVE DOOCY (CO-HOST): Dangerous people are indoctrinating your children, that's according to a leading conservative who’s warning parents in a new video about sending their kids to America’s liberal colleges.
...

JORDAN PETERSON (UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO): Well, increasingly, and this is not only the case of universities, people are being taught by ideologues, not by educators. And ideologues have a very simple way of looking at the world. They reduce it to a few principles like inequality and unfairness and power. Those would be the fundamental principles at the moment that are operating on the radical left, and they're on an ideological campaign and that’s increasingly the case in elementary, junior high, and high schools as well. Mostly because the faculties of education are full of people who are radical. So -- and this is well-documented. Even the Chronicle of Higher Education came out a month ago with a blistering piece on faculties of education, describing them as academically suspect and ideologically possessed, which I think is exactly right.

DOOCY: Well, we've talked a lot about that on this program, but the question is, for parents who are thinking about sending their kids to college someday or already have, is, is this effort, rather than these professors and what not being educators but being ideologues, where'd that come from? Is it concerted across the board thing? Or is it just happening by accident?

PETERSON: No, no I think part of it's still a hangover from the 1960s, I would say, and perhaps even a bit of a hangover from the Cold War.

DOOCY: What do you mean? You mean the people from the '60s and '70s are now --

PETERSON: And the ethos that was broadcast so widely in the 1960s. And there was a lot of stress in the ‘60s, especially because of the Vietnam War and the consequences of the ongoing Cold War, and we're still sort of suffering from the aftermath of that ideological battle. But I also think the universities made a dreadful mistake expanding their humanities purview to include disciplines like women's studies and these ethnic studies disciplines, which aren't disciplines. They're pseudo-disciplines at best, and they have very, very low academic standards, and they're corrupting the rest of the enterprise. And so -- and that's not a good thing.

DOOCY: What do you mean corrupting the rest of the enterprise?

PETERSON: Well, you need to have standards in education. And the fact that disciplines emerged that had no real methodology and no method of proof, no philosophical background, no real history, meant that -- and that they became degree-granting enterprises, and that they emerged to produce political activists, which is exactly what they advertise on their websites, means that you've got a fifth column of ideologues operating behind the scenes, and they spend almost all of their time engaged in political activism.

Alex Jones: President Obama has been “having sex with 10 dudes a day” on taxpayer time

ALEX JONES (HOST): I learned this with Pizzagate and stuff. You’ve got admissions and thousands of emails about the kids will be delivered into the hot tub for your pleasure and then it’s the FBI code words for sex with kids off their own homeland security manual and they’re talking about $65,000 of succulent hot dogs. “Oh God, these are good. I had these hot dogs in Hawaii and they were delivered by jet.” It’s male prostitutes.

And look, Obama’s having sex with 10 dudes a day, whatever. The point is is that that’s what’s going on on your taxpayer time. He’s not watching SportsCenter three hours a day up there, OK? OK? And the report is he’s got -- I’m not going to get into it on a family show -- but let’s just say Amtrak isn’t just a train. So, I’m not even -- all I’m getting at here is I noticed this penchant for going with the rumor or the secondhand or something without total proof instead of ignoring all the real stuff.

Has-been “pickup artist” Roosh V sounds more like an incel every day

Sad fact: Women only want to date The Beatles

By David Futrelle

Pity poor Roosh! It seems like only yesterday the alleged pickup artist and semi-ironic rape legalization proponent was basking in a worldwide wave of adulation hatred as he trotted around a portion of the globe on his “Roosh World Tour,” bringing his message of “neomasculinity” to his small but fervent fanbase and generating headlines at every stop.
