Birth of a White Supremacist

Mike Enoch’s transformation from leftist contrarian to nationalist shock jock.

In the early days, “The Daily Shoah” reserved most of its firepower for its neighbors on the political spectrum, mocking those on the alt-right who reduced all geopolitical issues to a simple Zionist conspiracy. With each episode, though, the co-hosts’ anti-Semitism sounded more sincere. Allusions to gas chambers and ovens became almost a verbal tic. Whenever the co-hosts mentioned a Jewish journalist or politician, they would emphasize the name, pronouncing it in a nasal accent and using a reverb effect. This invention—the Echo, they called it—became one of their signature memes. They approximated it in writing, in the blog and on Twitter, surrounding Jewish names with triple parentheses.

Then, in January, 2015, Enoch read “The Culture of Critique: An Evolutionary Analysis of Jewish Involvement in Twentieth-Century Intellectual and Political Movements,” by Kevin MacDonald, a former psychology professor at California State University, Long Beach. The book—published in 1998, heavily footnoted, and roundly debunked by mainstream social scientists—is a touchstone of contemporary intellectualized anti-Semitism. On “The Daily Shoah,” Enoch called it “important and devastating, something I urge everybody to read,” and then offered even higher praise: “It triggered me so hard.” From then on, he began to express his anti-Semitism more frankly. He sometimes spun his Northeastern upbringing as an advantage: having grown up around Jews, he understood the enemy. “You’ll talk to white Americans today, and they don’t actually know if someone’s Jewish or not,” he said. “I have very honed Jewdar. I can tell.”

Enoch still lived with his wife, in the one-bedroom apartment where he recorded “The Daily Shoah.” His wife—they separated in January and are in the process of divorcing—declined to be interviewed for this piece, and no one I talked to, including people who were in a position to know, could fully explain how a Jew and a professional anti-Semite stayed together for so long. “They always talked about everything,” one person told me. “She was his best audience. It’s possible that they never talked about this, but it’s hard to imagine.”

POISONED FRUIT IN THE WALLED GARDEN – THE ALT RIGHT: A GROWING PROBLEM, BUT NOT A NEW ONE
October 19th, 2017

Rotten to the Grassroots

Twenty-sixteen was probably the worst year for online hate speech to date: a year when a loose network of neo-fascist trolls known as the Alt Right finally managed to overwhelm many online discussion platforms in the West, after years of trying.

Posing as members of an outraged, but otherwise ordinary public, these trolls flooded Facebook, Twitter, and many major news websites with hateful posts.

It seemed clear that they were striving to mould a new popular consensus of contempt for minorities everywhere… and by extension, a consensus of contempt for any social justice movement that stood in their way. And, to a degree, they succeeded in altering the public’s perceptions about everything from the new Star Wars movie, to the Brexit, to Hilary Clinton’s state of health, not to mention the election campaign of President Trump.

Maybe it would be more correct to call theirs an ‘unpopular consensus’ though, because no matter what the Alt Right would like us to believe, its extremist hate is still in a minority across the Western world. However, it is easy to forget this fact when its virtual foot soldiers are seizing an ever-increasing range of territory online.

How big of a range exactly? One study undertaken by the Anti-Defamation League found that 2.6 million anti-Semitic tweets had been posted to Twitter by just 1,600 individuals in 2016. Together, these anti-Semitic tweets were seen around 10 billion times.

The study’s authors noted that, ‘Waves of anti-Semitic tweets tend to emerge from closely connected online “communities.” These aggressors are disproportionately likely to self-identify as Donald Trump supporters, conservatives, or part of the “alt-right.”‘

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, an NGO that monitors American hate groups, the Alt Right is a group bound together by, ‘a loose set of far-right ideals centered on “white identity” and the preservation of “Western civilization.” Alt-Right adherents stridently reject egalitarianism and universalism.’

Former Milo Yiannopoulos intern who killed his own father had a strong presence in alt-right circles online

A former intern and ghostwriter for Milo Yiannopoulos, the right-wing provocateur who first made a name for himself on Breitbart News, killed his own father for allegedly calling him a Nazi after years of frequently posting on far-right blogs, YouTube, and Reddit.

Lane Davis, 33, murdered his father on July 14 in the community of Samish Island, Washington, after an altercation erupted between him and his parents in which he accused them of being "leftist pedophiles" after becoming angered by something online, The Daily Beast reports.

Because Davis is reportedly prone to angry outbursts, when his mother Catherine Davis initially called 911, she was relatively calm, according to recordings of the call recently obtained by The Daily Beast.

"He needs an intervention of some kind here," she told dispatchers.

However, minutes later, she called again.

"He stabbed him!" Davis's mother yelled, referring to Davis's father, Charles Davis. "He's dead, he's dead, he's dead," she said after calling a third time.

Police arrested Davis soon afterward and charged him with first-degree murder, to which Davis pleaded not guilty. He is currently being held in a county jail on $1 million bail, and his trial is set to take place in January.

Lane Davis has a long and prolific history online, and as his mother told a 911 dispatcher in the calls obtained by The Daily Beast, "He just lives on the internet."

After becoming involved in right-wing circles online for the first time through Gamergate, a movement of gamers attempting to "fight back" against the influence of feminism and progressivism in the video game industry, Davis went on to posting right-wing conspiracy videos on YouTube and wrote posts that garnered thousands of upvotes on Reddit's r/The_Donald subreddit, which sprang up during the 2016 presidential election in support of now-President Donald Trump.

Using the handle seattle4truth in both forums, he spread popular alt-right conspiracy theories about child sex rings run by Hilary Clinton, the activities of deceased Democratic National Committee staff Seth Rich, and ties between liberals and pedophilia, The Daily Beast noted.

Mike Cernovich Stole My Photo, Lied About It On Twitter, And Sold Trump Jr. On Yet Another Fake Conspiracy

Image

Watson's story about pro-pedophile protesters and Twitter censorship is on the front page of InfoWars. The conspiracy site—which has previously claimed that 9/11 was an "inside job," that the Sandy Hook massacre was a "false flag" operation and that Michelle Obama is a "tranny"—is a favorite source of content for both Donald Trump Jr. and his father. Repeatedly, family members and close confidantes of President Trump have helped to amplify the site's lies.
"As for the president's son, I think his ‘like' speaks for itself and brings attention to the fact that he, himself is a follower of these alt-right groups,” Denson added.

How Mike Cernovich Is Pizzagating His Latest Victim

Maybe the first thing to understand about Cernovich — in the context of this story, at least — is that he has a tendency to accuse people he dislikes, whether politicians or the subjects of his online disputes, of terrible sexual predilections. He does it really, really frequently, and is particularly obsessed with pedophiles and their enablers and cover-uppers: Cernovich believes they are absolutely everywhere, that the world is awash in pedophile conspiracies. Once he’s identified someone he believes is a sex criminal (or, in rare cases, an actual sex criminal), he will demand that various people in their orbit then vocally denounce that person. If they don’t, then as far as Cernovich is concerned they are suspect, too. News outlets that run stories about the science of pedophilia, meanwhile — and this is an active, important area of study for sex researchers — are “pro-pedophile.”

Here’s a partial sampling of Cernovich’s pedophilia-related tweets just since April:

Black Hole Sun: Building a Strategy Beyond The Fall of the Alt-Right
Image

The Alt-Right has also not been able to solve its problem of “optics” or repair the damage done after its defeat in Charlottesville. In each of the subsequent Alt-Right demonstrations that have taken place since August 12th, members of the Alt-Right have attempted to, or have successfully, engaged in acts of violence in the wake of their continued defeats. This includes Milo Yiannopoulos’ failed ‘Free Speech Week’ which saw attacks and harassment in Berkeley, a failed neo-Nazi rally in Philadelphia which ended in skinheads attacking antifascist counter-demonstrators, an attempted murder by neo-Nazis after Richard Spencer’s talk in Gainesville, Florida, and finally, the massive failure of the ‘White Lives Matter’ rally in middle Tennessee, which saw neo-Nazis and Klansman attacking working-class Tennesseans on their lunch breaks and outside of restaurants.

In the face of this failure, all sections of the Alt-Right are now setting their sights on rival factions. Richard Spencer seems to be blocking with Patriot Front and Identity Evropa and they are in turn focusing their remaining energy on speaking events and continued outreach to college students. Andrew Anglin of The Daily Stormer, once one of the foremost defenders of ‘National Socialism,’ now claims it was all a troll and is pushing for a rebranding of fascism as “American Nationalism.” Meanwhile, the hardest break has been between the Nationalist Front formation and the rest of the Alt-Right, with even sections of the Nationalist Front now seemingly throwing the Traditionalist Worker Party under the bus. Lastly, the section of the Alt-Right still in some contact with the Alt-Lite, namely people associated with James Allsup, are pushing to ride the current waves created Bannon, and call for the movement to reenter establishment conservative circles and leave behind the torch lit rallies.

The Alt-Right has been dealt a serious blow, however we should recognize that it is in their disintegration that they are perhaps their most dangerous, as some will leave behind building a mass movement an instead opt for outright violent action.

The current period thus presents us with three questions. The first, is how do we deal with the formations of the Alt-Right that are left? Namely the Nationalist Front in the South, and the Alt-Right formations close to Richard Spencer focused around recruiting on college campuses. Second, as comrades in Murfreesboro noted, even in small rural towns, we are seeing large numbers that are unprecedented, and on Halloween, we saw over 600 turn out against Milo in Orange County without much notice. How do we interact with the large numbers of people that are coming out and taking part in antifascist mobilizations, both in terms of spreading our ideas and making these events go deeper? Lastly, there is the question about how to transition this energy and enthusiasm against auxiliary far-Right groups onto the structural functioning of settler colonial democracy, especially against those making policy, namely around immigration, who have largely come out of suit and tie white nationalist circles.

"ANTIFA" RESPONSIBLE FOR SUTHERLAND SPRINGS MURDERS, ACCORDING TO FAR-RIGHT MEDIA

Police did not immediately announce Kelley's motive in the mass shooting. But Mike Cernovich, a self-described “American nationalist,” posted about the motive shortly after news of it broke. “Mass shooting at The First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, which has a largely white denomination,” Cernovich wrote. “Antifa terrorist attack?”

Cernovich pushed the same idea further Sunday evening, citing only “photos.” “Photos of Texas shooter is consistent with profile of Antifa member,” Cernovich posted. “This is looking more and more like Antifa terror.”

Alex Jones, who devoted his entire Saturday to doing live coverage on his web-show Info Wars on a second American civil war that absolutely never happened, also pushed the idea that the shooter could somehow be an antifa activist. “Was this part of the Antifa revolution against Christians and conservatives or a Isis op? [sic],” Jones tweeted Sunday afternoon to promote his show. “Live from the church.”

Jack Posobiec, a pro-Trump figure with a large following on social media, who has a reputation for creating and pushing fake news stories about leftists, posted a screen shot of something that looked like a direct message conversation on Twitter. The conversation appeared to be between a man named Dave Pollack and It’s Going Down (IGD), a self-described “digital community center for anarchist, anti-fascist, autonomous anti-capitalist and anti-colonial movements” frequently associated with “antifa” protests.

The Dave Pollack figure says in the screenshot: “Go after the heart of the far-right: conservative churches.” A spokesperson for Its Going Down, who asked not to be named, told Newsweek through a direct message that the screenshot was entirely fabricated, but noted that many people on social media have seized onto the picture and shared it anyway. On ZeroHedge, a libertarian blog, one of the commenters on a post about the mass shooting summed it up this way: “ He's Antifa, but you'll never see that confirmed because the FBI is a bunch of leftist commie sympathizing traitors,” a user named Gaius Frakkin’ wrote.

“Today we learned that Jack Posobiec was sharing a manufactured and fictitious conversation that was created to look like our account speaking with several others,” the spokesperson for IGD wrote to Newsweek. “The conversation implied that anarchists and antifa organizers are somehow supportive of church shootings. Nothing could be further from the truth, and our hearts go out to people across the U.S. who have lost, and continue lose loved ones in these horrific mass shootings.”

The spokesperson accused Posobiec and others of using the “pain and misery of working-class people” for profit.

“Posobiec wants to attack social movements to further his own reactionary political ends while growing his fame and career along the way,” the spokesperson wrote. “For the sake of not only the truth but people's lives, it's imperative that people recognize these phonies for what they are and denounce them.”

Update:

Jack Posobiec contacted Newsweek after the publication of this article and claimed that the screenshot that he posted was not taken from a direct message but from a comment left by someone on IGD's Facebook page. He added that he could not comment on the motivations of the shooter, and added that he posted the screenshot on November 3 without any knowledge of the shooting in Texas having taken place. He called IGD's depiction of him "completely false." The spokesperson for IGD denied knowledge of the Facebook comment and added in a phone conversation that "half of our Facebook comments are put there by alt-right trolls."

"Where it came from doesn't matter," the spokesperson said. "This is about insinuation and not fact."

The Alt-Right: History, Ideology, and the Future of a Fascist Movement (podcast)

Image

This time on the podcast Eric welcomes author and researcher Matthew Lyons to the show to discuss the "Alt-Right," and how it relates to our politics today and in the future. The conversation begins with a discussion of what the alt-right is, and where it came from both intellectually, and in terms of its online evolution. From there, Eric and Matthew discuss everything from the terminology to the alt-right's discourse on women, culture, biology, race, politics, religion, and so much more.

The second half of the show explores the role of Donald Trump in mainstreaming the alt-right, and its relationship to international forces ranging from #Putin's Russia to active and nascent fascist movements throughout Europe. Eric and Matthew explore how the alt-right could potentially develop in the future, and what that means for #antifascists, and society generally. This in depth conversation goes down every rabbit hole, and explores myriad aspects of this complex and dangerous movement called the alt-right. Don't miss it!

The Online Radicalization We’re Not Talking About

By Alice Marwick and Becca Lewis

Image

When you hear the word radicalization, what usually comes to mind is young people turning to Islamic fundamentalism. The internet has proven to be an effective platform for radicalization of this kind; ISIS has a host of YouTube channels, chat rooms, and Twitter accounts that are extremely effective at channeling the energy of disaffected and disenfranchised young people.

But the far right is doing virtually the same thing — and possibly even more effectively. In fact, a recent study shows that white-supremacist Twitter accounts have increased more than 600 percent since 2012, and outperform ISIS accounts by every possible metric. We’ve already seen the violence that can emerge from this trend: Dylann Roof and Elliot Rodger were both radicalized in online far-right communities before their respective shootings.

For the last six months, we’ve been researching how far-right groups, such as the alt-right, white nationalists, and men’s-rights activists manipulate the mainstream media to amplify their ideas and shape news narratives to their advantage. (You can read the report we produced here.) These communities gather on boards like 4chan and the Reddit clone Voat, where they collaboratively develop ideas and draw up messaging strategies. Then they use Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to popularize hashtags, spread talking points, and boost news stories coming from their favorite media figures.

A successful story is one that moves from far-right sites like Breitbart and Infowars to mainstream newspapers or cable news. If you’ve read this week’s conspiracy-mongering stories about the supposedly suspicious death of DNC employee Seth Rich — or if you’ve read in the past about the rise of White Student Unions on college campuses, or “Pizzagate” — you’ve seen the fruits of their efforts.

As internet and media scholars, we began this project focused on media manipulation and the spread of misinformation. But as we delved into these spaces, we noticed that one of the biggest trends taking place had been flying under the radar. And that is far-right radicalization.

They don’t call it radicalization, of course. They call it “taking the red pill.” This metaphor comes from The Matrix, where the protagonist, Neo, is offered a red pill or a blue pill by his mentor Morpheus. If Neo takes the blue pill, he goes back to his cubicle-dwelling, workaday life. If he takes the red pill, the reality of the Matrix is revealed to him.

“Red-pilling the normies” is a primary goal of far-right movements. They want to convert people — especially young men — to their way of thinking. What the red pill actually reveals depends on who’s offering it. To men’s-rights activists, being red-pilled means throwing off the yoke of popular feminism and recognizing that men, not women, are the oppressed group. To the alt-right, it means revealing the lies behind multiculturalism and globalism, and realizing the truth of isolationist nationalism. To conspiracy theorists, it may mean accepting the influence of the New World Order on society. To white supremacists, it means acknowledging that Jewish elites control the culture and are accelerating the destruction of the white race.

Alt-right goes anti-capitalist? Well, so they say

How to resist meaninglessness in this “corporate neoliberal world,” according to white nationalists: Blame the Jews

It is hardly a mystery as to why the alt-right is suddenly adopting anti-capitalist rhetoric; simply put, they see an opportunity. Anti-capitalist sentiments have been growing in America and elsewhere in recent years, and reactionaries like Spencer and Enoch are keenly aware of this fact. They recognize the value of anti-capitalist politics in today’s environment, and see it as a kind of tool to propagate their hateful ideology.

Traditionally, anti-capitalism has been found predominantly on the left, while the right has historically defended the interests of big business (and other forms of hierarchy). But there is a historical precedent for fascists claiming to be anti-capitalist. In his influential work “The Anatomy of Fascism,” political scientist Robert Paxton explored this phenomenon in detail, and his conclusion is edifying for our current situation:
Early fascist movements flaunted their contempt for bourgeois values and for those who wanted only "to earn money, money, filthy money." They attacked "international finance capitalism" almost as loudly as they attacked socialists. Whenever fascist parties acquired power, however, they did nothing to carry out these anticapitalist threats. By contrast, they enforced with the utmost violence and thoroughness their threats against socialism.

Fascists, in other words, were never truly anti-capitalist, and after seizing power they brutally cracked down on labor groups and anti-capitalist activists while aligning with the big industrialists (i.e., the “producers”). The fascist critique of capitalism — if one can even call it that — was never about the economic system itself, but the cultural decay that it had supposedly engendered. The fascists were revolting less against capitalism than they were against liberal modernity (capitalism and modernity are, of course, closely interconnected).

“When they denounced the bourgeoisie, it was for being too flabby and individualistic to make a nation strong, not for robbing workers of the value they added,” Paxton notes. “What they criticized in capitalism was not its exploitation but its materialism, its indifference to the nation, its inability to stir souls.”

Alt-right fascists of today criticize capitalism for the same reasons: the materialism, the cultural liberalism (i.e., immigration, diversity, etc.), the lack of meaning and emptiness in the modern world. They do not, however, criticize capitalism as an economic system, nor do they examine the structural forces that lead to things like inequality and consumerism; instead they blame the “Jewish conspiracy,” along with other scapegoats (people of color, immigrants, foreigners) who are a party to the conspiracy against the white race. Thus, the fascist critique of capitalism is about as inane and incoherent as it is hateful and offensive.

The left does not ignore cultural questions when critiquing capitalism, and leftists are often the sharpest critics of materialism and the shallowness of popular culture; but the cultural effects of capitalism are ultimately seen as a consequence of economic and structural forces, not an “international Jewish conspiracy.”
